Description
It's an impressive feat to complete 28 weeks of training to become an EMT, even without a pandemic in the background. At Faneuil Hall, Mayor Janey and Boston EMS Chief James Hooley proudly present badges to the 13 graduates of Boston EMT Academy's Class 2021-1.

D
B
E
To
chief
hooley
to
director,
rita
nives
to
honorable
mayor
kim
janey,
with
respect
to
all
faith
traditions,
let's
bow
our
heads
in
prayer,
eternal
god,
our
father.
We
thank
you
for
allowing
us
to
come
together
to
witness
another
recruit
class,
and
thank
you,
lord
god,
for
the
boston
ems.
We
thank
you,
lord
god,
for
the
class.
Lord!
That's
before
us.
We
pray
that
you'll
bless
these
emts
as
they
go
out
in
the
community
and
touch
lives
and
save
lives
and
help
in
a
special
way.
E
I
pray
that
you'll
continue
to
strengthen
and
bless
the
academy
and
all
the
instructors
and
I've
invoked
your
presence
to
be
among
us.
Even
now,
as
we
share
in
this
ceremony,
I
pray
only
father
your
choices,
blessings
to
be
upon
the
family
members
who
have
went
through
lord
with
those
who
went
through
their
exercises
and
training.
E
A
Bishop
dickerson,
and
just
one
second
before
we
dismiss
the
honor
guide
I
just
want
to
for
those
who
who
don't
know.
Bishop
dickerson
now
he's
been
a
pretty
regular
fixture
at
our
graduations
for
many
years,
even
the
ones
on
soccer
field.
So
a
virtual
one
even
know.
Last
time
he's
been
a
good
sport
about
that.
But
besides
that
he's
his
church,
greater
love.
Tabernacle
has
regularly
offered
healing
services
for
first
responder
police
fire
ems.
You.
A
As
well
too,
but
I'm
sure
someday
we'll
we'll
be
back
in
there
and
it's.
A
Bishop
dickerson
very
much
for
being
here
again
today
with
that.
Oh
okay,
we're
gonna,
now
pause
your
dismissal
on
event.
C
F
B
Good
morning,
welcome
may
eugenie.
A
Executive
director
nevis,
our
academy
staff,
which
includes
command
staff,
the
training
captains,
the
lead
ftos
and
some
of
the
field
ftos,
who
many
who
couldn't
be
present
today,
because
they're
working
in
the
field.
But
we
appreciate
that-
and
we
also
want
to
welcome
department,
members,
families
and
friends,
because
we
had
to
downsize
as
well.
We
weren't
able
to
not
normally
lots
of
times
we
have
representatives
from
command
staff
from
the
police
department,
the
fire
department,
many.
A
Departments
have
come
before,
and
but
they
congratulate
you
as
well
on
behalf
of
the
men
and
women
of
boston
ems.
I
wish
to
thank
you
all
for
joining
us
here
today.
This
is
the
first
time
since
2019
that
we've
not
only
had
return
to
faneuil
hall,
but
it's
also
the
first
time
we've
been
able
to
invite
others
to
join.
In
our
special
occasion.
A
A
G
A
Get
hired
the
pawn
hires
recruits
you
again
tested
for
three
months
in
the
classroom
and
then
three
more
months
in
the
field,
doing
real
calls
where
you
applied
your
skills
and
knowledge.
Under
the
guidance
and
mentoring
of
your
training
offices,
you
received
instruction
anatomy,
physiology,
treatment
of
all
manner
of
medical
and
trauma
emergencies,
infectious
diseases,
mass
casualty
care,
including
medical
care
and
hazardous
materials
operations
operating
under
the
forced
protection
of
the
boston
police
department
to
access
victims
at
mass
or
active
shooting
scenes
and
emergency
vehicle
operations.
B
A
Cardiac
incidents
676
illness
incidents,
241
injuries,
46
overdoses,
205,
behavioral,
health
emergencies,
you've
been
busy.
Thank
you.
We've
counted
over
the
last
three
months
as
well
to
help
us
in
the
field.
A
Experienced
saving
a
life
and
others
have
you
been,
and
others
have
been
there
when
a
life
has
been
lost
throughout
the
process.
Members
of
our
training
academy
have
been
with
you
to
help.
You
learn
from
each
experience
and
patient
encounter
class
2021-1
you've
proven
that
you're
now
ready
to
represent
this
department
with
pride
and
professionalism
and
treat
your
patients
with
kindness
and
compassion.
A
A
Over
over
the
years,
we've
encountered
a
lot
of
people
who
have
been
successful
in
recovery
and
moved
on
until
supportive
housing
or
gotten
on
into
their
own
places,
and
they've
they've
said
that
so
many
times
that
they
were
ready
to
give
up
on
themselves.
But
the
fact
that
there
were
other
people
around
them,
people
like
you
that
did
not
give
up
on
them
that
encouraged
them
to
keep
them
going.
So
that's
just
as
important
and
in
many
ways
it's
it's
more
difficult,
and
I
encourage
you
to
keep
doing
that.
A
You've
already
seen
that
you've
experienced
that,
as
the
numbers
have
shown
just
in
these
three
months
so
to
our
newest
members,
who
are
about
to
be
badged
and
be
full-time
emts
with
us
don't
give
up
on
yourselves.
Okay
remain
lifelong
learners.
You
did
a
lot
to
get
here,
you
and
your
families.
Thank
you.
Your
families
who
supported
you
through
this.
It
was
one
of
the
things
we
asked
the
first
week
in
the
academy
was
to
really
try
to
devote.
B
A
You
know
we
last
remember
some
people,
your
class
along
the
way
and
it's
it
was.
It
was
demanding
and
the
covert
experience
that
we're
all
living
through
and
kids
not
being
able
to
be
in
school
and
being
homeschooled,
and
it's
been
difficult
and
we've
had
to
work
through
that
and
thank
you
all
for
sticking
it
up.
I
want.
B
A
Personally,
thank
you
all
for
coming
to
us
to
come
into
ems.
This
is
a
time
in
our
country,
not
just
in
our
city,
but
our
country,
our
city
everywhere,
where
the
numbers
of
people
that
are
up
becoming
certified
and
coming
to
ems
have
been
actually
decreasing.
It's
been
a
little
bit
harder
for
all
of
us
to
to
get
people
to
come
in
and
to
stay
in
I'm
sure
a
lot
of
it
has
to
do.
B
A
Things:
okay,
there's
there's
a
lot
of
challenges:
we're
gonna
face:
okay,
there's
a
lot
of
things
that
we
have
to
take
head
on.
This
group
is
terrific
for
boston,
ems,
isn't
afraid
to
look
at
the
stock
reality
of
disparities
of
health
outcomes
based
on
race,
ethnicity,
place
wealth,
and
you
know
we.
B
A
B
A
The
right
people
at
the
right
time-
and
I
just
want
you
to
know
that
I
really
do
appreciate
that
you
came
here
whatever
you
were
doing
before
this
and
most
of
you
weren't
working
as
emts
before
you
came
here,
you're
doing
something
else
and
you
switched
and
you
took
this
on
and
you
stuck
it
through.
Thank
you
very
much
remain
lifelong
learners
and,
as
you
go
out
too
remember
now,
you're
representing
the
city
you're
representing
the
department
you're.
A
A
A
whole
different
life
experience
in
that
none
of
us
possess
that
so
many
of
our
other
classmates
do
and
we'd.
A
Talking
with
us,
okay,
because
shame
on
us,
if
we
don't
listen,
thank
you
very
much
for
that
and
I
hope
you
all
have
long
happy
and
fulfilling
careers.
A
Okay,
at
this
time,
I
just
want
to
introduce
our
first
speaker,
you
know,
and
just
give
bear
with
me
a
minute.
B
I
want
to
introduce
the
executive
director
of
the
boston,
public
health.
A
Commission,
rita
nieves,
rita
I've
had
the
pleasure
of
knowing,
since
I
think,
1980
rita
has
been
like
about
40
years
now
in
boston,
a.
B
A
Who
worked
in
the
operating
room
at
boston
city
hospital
back
in
the
days
when
boston
city
hospital
was
the
only
trauma
center
in
town?
She
came
up.
Working
up
in
the
trenches
moved
on,
did
a
lot
of
work
with
addictions
headed
up
the
bureau
over
there,
she's
not
afraid
to
get
her
hands
dirty
she's
working
the
street,
along
with
you,
she's,
always
been
in
her
tenure
as
the
interim
executive
director.
A
She
she
completely
understood
what
it
was
that
you
do
every
day
and
she
appreciated
it.
She
didn't
need
a
lesson.
Hey.
Let
me
tell
you
a
little
bit
about
us.
She
knew
it
she's
noted
since
1980-
and
this
sadly
is
gonna-
be
well
not
for
her.
Sadly,
but
sadly,.
H
C
I
Thank
you,
chief
julie.
I'm
I'm
wondering
if,
if
I
still
can
get
my
ride
along
in
the
next
two
weeks,
so
what
do
you
think?
Can
I
still
get
it
because
I
never?
I
never
got
around
to
to
schedule
it
and
I
would
love
to
get
to
ride
in
the
ambulance
one
last
time
so
that'll
be
my
going
away
gift.
I
Thank
you.
Thank
you.
So
much
chiefly
for
this
introduction
and
congratulations
to
the
graduates
of
academy
class
2021..
I
I've
had
the
enormous
privilege
of
serving
as
a
public
health
professional
in
a
number
of
positions
and,
like
chief
woody
mentioned
first
as
a
nurse
at
the
what
used
to
be
the
boston
city
hospital
now
called
boston
medical
center
and
later
I
joined
public
health
and
I
held
various
roles
in
direct
service
programs,
but
most
of
my
time,
working
in
the
recovery
services
field
and
during
the
last
22
months,
I've
had
the
honor
of
being
the
interim
executive
director
for
the
boston
public
health
commission.
I
As
I
reflect
back,
you
know
and
like
chieffully
said,
I
am
retiring
in
september.
10
is
actually
my
retirement
day.
I've
been
reflecting
a
lot
about
the
past
and
my
work
in
in
public
health
and
what
one
constant
has
been
working
alongside
the
wonderful
clinicians
at
boston
ems.
I
So,
as
a
nurse
who
worked
in
the
or
way
back,
I
could
see
you
know
the
work
that
you
do,
especially
in
in
very
difficult
and
traumatic
situations
and
events
that
sometimes
happen
in
our
city
and
how
you
work
with
clients
who
were
really
fighting
for
their
lives
and
and
the
caring
and
the
skills
that
you
demonstrated
in
those
situations.
I
When
you
were
bringing
people
to
the
hospital-
and
you
know
now,
you
have
joined
the
boston
family,
so
the
boston
ems
tradition
has
been
passed
on
to
you
and
let
me
tell
you,
I
don't
think
you
could
be
in
better
hands
if
there's
one
thing.
I've
always
appreciated
about
ems
and
the
ems
team.
Is
that
while
you're
so
big-
and
you
know
everybody
is
in
different
trucks
and
you
don't
overlap
with
each
other,
often
in
the
same
physical
space.
I
You
are
such
a
strong
team
and
you
have
such
a
culture
of
care
for
each
other,
and
you
will
find
out
that.
That's
true,
you
know,
because
whenever
a
member
you
know,
needs
support
and
is
struggling,
the
team
shows
up
and
right.
You
know
and
rallies
around
their
members,
so
you
are
in
great
hands
and
I'd
like
to
take
an
opportunity
to
say
thank
you
to
chief
hooley
and
the
team
and
the
leadership
team.
I
That's
here,
because
the
last
22
months
have
been
incredibly
challenging
for
for
all
of
us,
but
especially
for
ems.
You
kept
working
out
there
on
the
streets
and
on
the
trucks,
even
though
it
was
it
was
risky
and
it
was
stressful
and
if
it
wasn't
because
of
the
work
you
did,
you
know
many
people
would
have
lost
their
lives
because
they
would
have
never
made
it
in
time
to
the
hospitals,
especially
during
the
different
search
searches
that
we've
had.
So
I
I
admire
the
work
you
do.
I
We
couldn't
do
the
work
that
the
commission
does
without
counting
on
on
you
and-
and
I
want
to
say
thank
you
to
chief
hooley.
You
know,
I
don't
think
he
could
have
a
better
leader
he's
such
a
a
bright
clinician,
an
administrator,
a
leader
and
such
a
caring
person,
and
he
always
has
your
interest.
You
know
come
first
and
your
well-being,
so
thank
you
for
joining
our
team.
I
You
know
officially
welcoming
to
the
boston,
public
health
commission,
and
I
wish
you
a
long
career
in
public
health
and
with
ems
and
good
luck
to
all
of
you,
and
and
thank
you
again
for
making
the
decision
that
in
any
given
time
it
would
be
admirable
for
you
to
join
ems
in
these
times.
You
know
you
you're,
already
heroes
in
my
book
and
be
well
and
good
luck
with
everything.
Thank
you.
A
B
A
Greater
reading,
who
was
going
back
then
to
the
80s
me
and
janie
knew
us
because
she
lived
here.
She
lived
in
the
neighborhoods
here.
She
raised
her
family
here,
her
family
lives
here
and
her
neighbors
and
and
other
people
that
you
know
have
I'm
sure
over
the
years
someone's
been
on
the
receiving
end
about
call
to
9-1-1
and.
A
A
The
job
well,
then,
mayor
walsh,
was
going
through
the
vetting
process.
We
started
running
some
vaccination
clinics
out
in
neighborhood
sites
and
when
the
mayor
made
it
to
be.
B
A
Should
say,
then
city
council
president
came
out
to
join
us
to
help
and
she
didn't
just
show
up
get
a
few
pictures
taken
and
take
off.
She
came
to
at
least
three,
I
think
four
of
our
clinics
and
stayed
around
four
hours
chatting
with
patients
most.
J
A
Who
were
reluctant
to
get
vaccinated
going
up,
knocking
on
doors
and
apartments
and
taking
the
time
when
could
be
a
little
bit
of
a
break
talking
to
some
of
our
folks
or
working
down
there
too?
So
she
showed
her
real
character
and
that,
and
so.
K
It
is
such
a
pleasure
to
be
here,
and
I
want
to
start
by
recognizing
bishop
dickerson,
who
opened
us
up
with
the
invocation
bishop
dickerson,
I'm
just
so
grateful
for
your
leadership
in
our
city.
I
have
known
you
for
now
maybe
20
years
first
in
education,
but
it
has
been
just
amazing
to
to
see
you
shine
in
the
way
that
you
cover
our
city
in
prayer
and
I'm
just
so
grateful
to
have
you
as
a
partner
in
this
work
to
rita
nieves.
K
That's
what
you
guys
can
have
chief.
You
have
been
so
so
incredible.
K
As
chief
julia
said,
I
had
the
pleasure
of
working
with
him
throughout
my
entire
tenure
in
elected
office,
but
as
mayor
of
the
city,
to
see
up
close
and
personal,
the
work
that
he
does
every
single
day
to
keep
the
residents
safe
to
lead
his
team
to
the
entire
team.
You
guys
do
amazing
work.
This
is
such
a
noble
profession.
K
K
To
make
sure
we
were
getting
vaccines
in
everyone's
arms
and
to
be
able
to
work
closely
with
the
ems
team
and
the
boston
housing
authority
to
meet
residents
right
where
they
are,
whether
it
be
senior
housing
or
public
housing
has
been
so
rewarding,
and
it
is
why
we've
had
success
and
getting
close
to
70
percent
of
boston
residents
with
at
least
one
shot
in
their
arm.
That
is
their
shot
at
hope,
and
that
is
the
work
that
this
team
has
done.
So
I'm
so
grateful
to
you
for
your
leadership.
K
J
B
A
H
A
B
L
L
L
I
think
I
speak
for
everyone.
When
I
say
we
are
eternally
grateful
for
all
their
hard
work
dedication,
their
110
attitude,
the
recruit
side
of
things.
It
was
apparent
that
we
were
hitting
the
ground
running
with
each
day
lifting
stations
scenarios,
physical
training,
all
of
which
we
had
to
don
the
same
ppe.
We
were
expected
to
wear
out
in
the
field,
including
on
top
of
that,
all
our
medical
equipment
and
extrication.

The
front
these
friendships
we've
made
are
some
of
the
most
profound
connections
I've
made
thus
far,
and
then
we
got
deployed
staffing
training
trucks,
24
7
days
evenings
nights
non-stop.
Having
reviews
for
each
call
weekly
reports,
weekly
meetings,
monthly
rounds,
it
speaks
for
itself.
This
was
not
easy,
but
having
those
connections
made
it
possible
made
it
doable
I'll
cherish
most
of
those
memories,
but
I'll
cherish
every
bond
I've
made
during
those
times.

A
Very
nice
words,
your
classmates
selected,
a
good
speaker
on
behalf,
so,
as
you
can
see,.
A
All
okay,
so
we're
learning
from
you
so
keep
it
up.
Okay,
we
like
hearing
from
you.
I
appreciate
that
all
right.
M
Good
afternoon
and
congratulations
as
a
tradition
here
at
boston
ems,
you
started
six
months
ago
as
a
group
of
individuals
and
now
you
become
class
2021-1,
and
you
will
always
be
that.
So
please
remember
that.
So
we
will
log
you
on
with
dispatch
operations.

You
again
monica
well
thank
you
for,
and
thank
you
to
all
of
you
for
joining
us
here.
A
Today,
boston
like
to
extend
our
appreciation
and
gratitude
to
the
great
hall
for
hosting
us
here
in
this
historical
landmark.
A
We
ask,
sadly,
that
all
photos
following
the
ceremony
be
taken
outside,
so
that
we
can
get
back
out
in
a
better
circulation
of
fresh
air,
and
normally
we.
A
The
stage-
but
we
can't
do
that:
okay,
so
that.
