On December 1st 2022, THE MAYOR”S OFFICE OF EQUITY & INCLUSION CABINET:RACIAL JUSTICE FEATURED DANNY RIVERA joined by accompanists and arrangers GAVIN RUSHING (Organ) and MATT SAVAGE (Piano) who made their debut in America’s oldest extant Black church, The African Meeting House to celebrate the release of Songs of Free Men. Rivera has been working on this sustained, centuries-long freedom project of Negro Spirituals since 2020 and performed the work publicly for the first time ever. This performance highlights the association of Black Americans which merged African cultural heritage with the experiences of being held in bondage in slavery, at first during the transatlantic slave trade and for centuries afterwards, through domestic slave trade. These songs were sung in churches, cotton fields, and as "signal songs" on the Underground Railroad.

What do we do?
How do we do it?
Why do we do it?
This video explains it all. The Racial justice initiatives aim to make sure all of us have access and support to thrive from childhood to retirement. We're focused on social and economic resilience in a City affected by historic and current divisions of race and class and solutions for the future.

The Mayor’s Office of Equity and Inclusion Cabinet: Racial Justice believes that unity in giving can motivate us as we partake in this year's holiday season. The goal is to give back to the community that has done so much for each other. Boston gives back is an opportunity for us to experience the rich cultures and activities and this year we aim to capture and highlight what makes us unique. The winter holidays in December are full of parties and festivities where some are traditional and some are for fun. Some of the Holiday celebrations we want to incorporate include Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa.
