Mayor Walsh joined with Commissioner Joseph Finn and members of the Boston Fire Department to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the BFD's recently promoted class. This promotional class consists of 10 individuals from diverse backgrounds, with the department as a whole makings strides towards greater diversity and inclusion.
These promotions included two historical landmarks for the city--Deanna McDevitt was elevated to the rank of Fire Chief and became the first woman to hold that poistion. The other was Andre Stallworth, who became the first African-American man appointed as Chief of Operations for the BFD.

The New Engine 42 will be the first fire station built in the City of Boston in over 30 years. The Project consists of demolition of the existing fire station and construction of a new fire station located at 1870 Columbus Avenue, Roxbury, MA. The new 24,000 sq/ft fire station will be two stories high with a penthouse for mechanical equipment. Construction will start in September of 2019 with an anticipated November 2020 completion.

The memory of fallen Boston Firefighters Edward Walsh, Jr. and Michael Kennedy will now live on in the streets of the Back Bay thanks to the Garden Club. Mayor Walsh joins the Boston Fire Department, the Garden Club of the Back Bay, along with the Walsh and Kennedy families to dedicate a tree in memory of the two heroes who lost their lives in the fire at 298 Beacon Street in 2014.

At the State House, Mayor Walsh and Governor Baker laid a wreath to honor all deceased Massachusetts firefighters in the annual Mass Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. In 2007, the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built on the State House to serve as a lasting tribute to past and present firefighters. Over 900 names are engraved on the memorial's Ring of Honor.

The announcement comes as Commissioner Finn has recently received the Fire Chief of the Year award from the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association, an organization of 200 fire chiefs representing the largest cities in the US and Canada.
