At the Garden of Remembrance in Boston Public Garden, Mayor Wu joined with family members of those who passed on September 11th for the annual wreath-laying ceremony.

On June 23, 2023, Mayor Wu announced the inaugural Boston Fire Cadet class. Members of the Cadet Program, which was designed to help ensure sworn members of Boston Fire Department better represent City demographic, were celebrated with a pinning ceremony at Florian Hall.

Mayor Wu joins Fire Commissioner Paul Burke to break ground on the new Boston Engine 17 Station atop Meeting House Hill in Dorchester.

Boston is the home of the nation's oldest fire department, and each year it continually brings in talented new recruits. Gathered in Dorchester's Florian Hall, Mayor Wu, BFD Commissioner Paul Burke, families and friends celebrated Boston Fire Department's newest recruit class.

Boston's 1942 Cocoanut Grove Fire is the deadliest nightclub fire in American history. 80 years later, Mayor Wu gathers in Bay Village with former Mayor Raymond Flynn, fire personnel, and the families of the victims to commemorate the tragedy and announce a new Cocoanut Grove Memorial.

In remembrance of September 11th, Mayor Wu marked the anniversary with three ceremonies throughout the City of Boston. At one of these ceremonies, Mayor Wu gathered with retired and current firefighters at the Vendome Hotel Fire Memorial, to honor brave firefighters who lost their lives on both 9/11 and the 1972 Vendrome Hotel Fire.

The Boston Fire Department's District 10 is back in service! Mayor Janey joins members of the City Council, Boston Fire Commissioner Jack Dempsey and members of the District 10 community in reopening the once closed fire station in West Roxbury, along with promoting 4 Distict Cheifs, 5 Captains and 5 Lieutenants in the Boston Fire Department.

Construction of Boston's first new firehouse in over three decades is in full swing! Mayor Walsh joins Fire Commissioner John Dempsey, Former Commissioner Joseph Finn and Lieutenant John Soares for a Beam Raising at the construction site of Ladder 42's new firehouse. This new building will provide a healthier and safer working environment for all firefighters.

Mayor Walsh joined with Commissioner Joseph Finn and members of the Boston Fire Department to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the BFD's recently promoted class. This promotional class consists of 10 individuals from diverse backgrounds, with the department as a whole makings strides towards greater diversity and inclusion.

These promotions included two historical landmarks for the city--Deanna McDevitt was elevated to the rank of Fire Chief and became the first woman to hold that poistion. The other was Andre Stallworth, who became the first African-American man appointed as Chief of Operations for the BFD.

The New Engine 42 will be the first fire station built in the City of Boston in over 30 years. The Project consists of demolition of the existing fire station and construction of a new fire station located at 1870 Columbus Avenue, Roxbury, MA. The new 24,000 sq/ft fire station will be two stories high with a penthouse for mechanical equipment. Construction will start in September of 2019 with an anticipated November 2020 completion.

Mayor Walsh, Boston Fire Commissioner Finn, and Police Commissioner Gross gathered at the Boston Fire Credit Union headquarters in Dorchester to acknowledge the BPD's Officer Wellness Initiatives. Checks were presented in support of the mental and physical well-being programs for Boston's first responders.

The memory of fallen Boston Firefighters Edward Walsh, Jr. and Michael Kennedy will now live on in the streets of the Back Bay thanks to the Garden Club. Mayor Walsh joins the Boston Fire Department, the Garden Club of the Back Bay, along with the Walsh and Kennedy families to dedicate a tree in memory of the two heroes who lost their lives in the fire at 298 Beacon Street in 2014.

At the State House, Mayor Walsh and Governor Baker laid a wreath to honor all deceased Massachusetts firefighters in the annual Mass Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. In 2007, the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built on the State House to serve as a lasting tribute to past and present firefighters. Over 900 names are engraved on the memorial's Ring of Honor.

Mayor Walsh and Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn congratulate the new Boston and Weymouth Fire Department recruits, upon their graduation in Dorchester's Florian Hall.

Mayor Walsh officially proclaimed May 4th, 2017 "Firefighter Appreciation Day" in the city of Boston at the firehouse on Meeting House Hill in Dorchester. The announcement comes as Commissioner Finn has recently received the Fire Chief of the Year award from the Metropolitan Fire Chiefs Association, an organization of 200 fire chiefs representing the largest cities in the US and Canada.

Mayor Walsh and Boston Fire Commissioner Joseph Finn attend a dedication ceremony for five new ladder trucks to be used across the city. The ceremony, held at Engine 14 & Ladder 4 firehouse in Dudley Square, highlights how 50 percent of Boston's ladder trucks have been replaced within the past year.

Students from the Charles Sumner Elementary School in Roslindale thank Boston firefighters for trying to save their playground from an arson-related fire that destroyed the play equipment.
