From YouTube: Puerto Rican Festival Flag Raising 2021
Description
In observance of the 52nd Annual Puerto Rican Festival of Massachusetts, Mayor Janey offers remarks at a flag raising ceremony on City Hall Plaza.
A
A
Madame
thank
you
so
much
for
being
with
us.
I
also
want
to
thank
former
commissioner
willie
grass,
who
is
somewhere
over
there.
A
I
also
want
to
thank
representative
orlando
ramos
and
senator
adam
gomez,
who
are
here
representing
springfield
and
who
are
proudly
representing
western
mass
boricua,
so
we
have
representation
from
across
the
commonwealth
today,
which
is
great
really
quickly.
I
want
to
just
talk
a
little
bit
about
the
puerto
rican
festival,
so
if
you
just
bear
with
us.
B
B
B
It
is
here
where
we
raise
our
flag,
reflecting
upon
all
of
those
that
came
before
us
and
paved
the
way
for
the
com.
The
puerto
rican
community
to
thrive,
make
waves
and
do
big
things
like
go
to
college
run
for
office
feed
the
community
become
an
educator,
become
a
health
worker,
healthcare
worker
or
become
an
artist.
There
are
borricois
in
every
realm
and
field
you
can
think
of,
and
we
celebrate
every
every
one
of
them
today,
because
we
know
that
our
people
are
essentially
are
essential
to
the
history
of
our
city,
commonwealth
and
nation.
C
Good
afternoon,
everybody
thank
you
all
for
joining
us
here
and
welcome
to
the
boston
city
hall.
My
name
is
lina
tramelli
and
I'm
the
east
boston
liaison
for
the
mayor's
office,
our
mayor
kim
jaini,
and
we
are
here
to
celebrate
puerto
rican
community
in
the
city
of
boston.
The
borica
community
contributes
to
the
diversity
and
growth
of
the
city
of
boston
and
shares
the
richness
of
their
culture
with
all
boston
residents
by
promoting
the
arts,
the
music,
the
folklore
and
the
dance.
Thank
you
again
for
being
here.
Muchas
gracias,.
A
Thank
you
so
much
lina.
As
everyone
knows,
we
are
a
loud
and
proud
people,
somo
juan
pueblo
or.
A
A
D
D
God,
as
a
puerto
rican
as
a
proud
puerto
rican,
I
thank
you
for
being
born
under
a
shield
whose
very
center
is
the
emblem
of
the
slain
lamb
of
god,
sitting
serenely
on
the
open
word-
and
I
thank
you,
dear
god,
because
you've
never
forgotten
your
promises
towards
puerto
rico.
Yo
te,
gracias,
medios,
por
que
nunca,
has
olvidado
tus
promesas,
para
ese
pueblo,
para
puerto
rico.
D
A
Thank
you
pastor,
sam
for
that
beautiful
prayer
and
thank
you
for
staying
present
with
us
today.
Aura.
E
Thank
you,
everybody!
Thank
you
for
being
here.
Okay,
as
all
as
always,
it
is
a
great
honor
to
gather
together
here.
We
know
just
how
much
of
blessing
it
is
after
the
pandemic
just
to
be
here
today
with
all
with
everybody
that
showed
up.
I
appreciate
it
so
much
still
a
lot
of
us
in
and
across
the
state
and
back
in
puerto
rico,
went
through
the
pandemic
to
teach
us
the
importance
of
community.
E
But
you
know
what
no
pandemic
can
teach
us
how
important
it
is
for
us
to
be
together
and
come
together
as
a
community
here
in
boston
massachusetts
as
well
as
in
puerto
rico.
We
knew
it
a
long
time
ago.
We
knew
it
when
we
were
running
through
the
streets
of
mattapan,
roxbury
and
jamaica
plain
without
a
worry
in
the
world
that
nothing
will
stop
us
from
raising
our
flag.
E
Most
puerto
ricans
aren't
raised
by
just
one
of
two
people
they're
brought
up
by
the
barrio,
the
neighborhood,
our
village.
They
were
brought
up
by
the
parents,
along
with
their
teachers
and
their
next-door
neighbors
and
the
owners
of
our
local
bodegas
and
their
pastors
as
you've
well
heard.
I
learned
early
on
that,
there's
nothing
more
important
than
our
community.
E
E
I
even
got
to
work
the
puerto
rican
festival
when,
as
with
my
parents,
what
are
community
leaders
activists,
it
was
just
something
beautiful
to
to
come
together
and
just
stay
together.
Now,
as
president
of
this
historic
organization,
I
can
say
I
look
back
with
a
lot
of
fond
memories
of
our
annual
festivities.
E
And
I
have
to
make
sure
we
don't
miss
anything
here.
We
never
gave
up
on
each
other.
We
never
gave
up
on
coming
together
during
the
good
times
nor
the
bad
times
and
we've
seen
so
many
bad
times
lately
and
as
an
organization.
Our
board
remains
committed
to
building
up
and
celebrating
the
puerto
rican
community
here
in
city
of
boston
and
across
the
commonwealth,.
E
Now
I
have
to
say
this
in
spanish:
not
going
to
get
away
from
it.
It's
our
language.
E
And
finally,
growing
up,
I
remember
the
certain
conversations
with
my
family
and
a
lot
of
my
friends
here
about
how
great
it
would
be
someday
to
see
someone
who
looked
like
us
and
who
shared
a
similar
life
experience
become
the
mayor
of
boston.
It
is
an
honor
to
know.
I've
lived
to
see
that
day
and
even
greater
is
the
honor
to
have
her
here,
alongside
with
us
today,
to
raise
our
flag.
F
Hello,
my
name
is
kim
janey
and
I
am
mayor
of
boston
and
it's
such
a
pleasure
to
be
here
with
you
today
to
celebrate.
I
want
to
thank
eddie,
president
of
the
puerto
rican
festival
for
all
of
his
work
and
his
leadership.
I
want
to
thank
michael.
I
want
to
thank
everyone
who
helped
put
this
together
and
who
helped
us
remember
and
recognize
the
important
contributions
of
puerto
ricans
in
the
city
of
boston.
I
want
to
acknowledge
a
few
folks
who
were
here
beginning
with
our
guests,
who
are
joining
us.
F
F
F
F
F
F
Him
not
just
for
his
words
of
inspiration
and
his
prayer
this
morning,
but
for
his
leadership
in
our
city,
and
I
want
to
thank
everyone
for
attending
today
as
a
little
girl
who
grew
up
in
the
city
of
boston.
I
saw
many
challenges
before
our
city,
many
that
still
persist
to
this
day,
but
what
I
saw
most
was
the
perseverance
and
the
resilience
of
the
people
of
boston.
F
The
neighborhoods
that
I
grew
up
in
were
divorc,
diverse,
and
so
much
of
my
childhood
was
spent
with
my
puerto
rican
brothers
and
sisters
who
I
went
to
school
with
and
played
with
in
the
neighborhood,
and
I'm
just
so
proud
to
lead
the
city
of
boston
at
this
time.
There's
a
lot
of
great
things
here
in
our
city,
a
lot
that
is
good
about
our
city
and
for
me
the
most
important
thing
are
our
people.
F
A
A
And
now
we're
going
to
present
councillor
arroyo.
Thank
you
councillor
for
being
with
us.
H
So
I'm
I'm
incredibly
proud
to
be
puerto
rican,
and
I
wear
that
in
many
different
ways.
We
are
a
small
island
with
a
big
footprint.
We
make
an
impact.
Well,
we
punch
well
above
our
weight
and
that
resilience
that
strength
of
people
is
something
that
we
carry.
H
H
We
come
from
the
same
place.
We've
made
it
here,
and
this
country
has
given
us
much
opportunity,
but
we've
risen
to
those
occasions.
We've
opened
businesses
in
this
city,
we've
lifted
other
folks
up.
We've
made
our
cities
safer.
We
saved
la
villa
right.
We
know
what
this
is
and
so
to
be
here
to
be
with
you
to
celebrate.
H
F
F
This
is
a
proclamation
from
the
city
of
boston,
signed
by
me
as
mayor,
and
to
recognize
that
this
has
been
happening
for
the
last
54
years
and
this
work
is
not
easy
work,
particularly
over
the
last
50
years
of
our
city's
history,
and
so
I
just
want
to
recognize
you
edwin,
and
certainly
all
of
the
organizers
who
helped
make
this
happen
on
this
day.
E
A
Thank
you
again,
senora
caldesa,
thank
you
councillor
and
we're
not
done
yet.
We
also
have,
as
you
heard
earlier,
some
represent
a
senator
and
a
representative
from
springfield
I'm
going
to
give
the
podium
to
senator
adam
gomez,.
I
I
I
I
I
think
the
most
important
piece
to
this
is
that
we
know
that
puerto
ricans.
We
are
mixed
of
different
cultures
that
create
la
isla
de
encanto
and
to
be
here
to
represent.
Yes,
I
was
elected
from
the
poorest
district
in
massachusetts,
called
the
north
end
of
springfield
and
yes,
we
are
able
to
break
glass
ceilings
as
of
recently
in
all
of
our
communities
and
raising
this
flag
for
the
54th
time
and
being
able
to
celebrate
our
culture,
our
love
for
each
other.
I
I
As
I
hold
this
position
in
the
massachusetts
state
senate,
I
will
be
that
representative
that
all
boricwas
all
folks
of
color
can
come
to
and
really
be
heard
inside
of
that
chamber.
I
want
to
give
my
thank
yous
to
also
my
sister
in
government
that
could
not
be
here
because
I
do
not
see
her,
but
I
got
to
give
her
a
strong
shout
out
senator
sonia
chang
diaz,
which
was
the
first
latina
ever
elected
to
the
massachusetts
state
senate.
I
I
Give
a
great
shout
out:
I'm
going
to
try
to
bring
some
folks
from
springfield
out
here
to
enjoy
that
game
to
watch
two
boricua
managers
go
head
to
head,
but
then
after
to
enjoy
the
festival
and
then
the
parade,
because
this
community
is
bigger
than
just
boston
springfield.
This
community
is
in
the
millions.
So
I'm
proud
to
be
here
with
all
of
you.
Thank
you
for
the
opportunity.
I
love
you
hue,
pa.
A
J
J
I
read
a
book
recently
where
the
author
described
boricwas
on
the
island
as
porpoises,
and
the
analogy
that
she
used
to
compare
the
two
groups
was
that,
even
when
we
can
barely
keep
our
heads
above
water,
we
are
always
happy.
We
are
always
smiling
despite
the
hurricanes,
despite
the
economic
condition
in
puerto
rico.
Despite
the
covet
19
pandemic
and
the
pandemic
of
racism,
we
are
always
happy
and
we
are
always
smiling
and
we're
always
waving
that
beautiful
flag.
J
We
have
him
in
our
homes,
we
have
them
in
our
cars,
we
wear
them
on
our
clothing
in
the
office
and
a
lot
of
people
don't
realize
why
that
is,
and
I've
heard
a
lot
of
people
question.
Why
is
it
that
puerto
ricans
are
so
so
proud
of
that
flag
and
to
find
the
answer
to
that
question?
You
have
to
look
at
our
history.
J
The
fact
is
that
there
was
a
time
in
our
history
where
it
was
illegal
to
own
or
display
a
puerto
rican
flag
on
the
island,
lei
cincuenti
law
of
53
prohibited
anyone
on
the
island
from
owning
or
displaying
a
puerto
rican
flag
punishable
by
10
years
imprisonment.
Ten
thousand
dollar
fine
or
both
we
are
proud
of
this
flag,
because
it
was
one
time
at
one
time.
J
A
Thank
you,
representative
ramos.
I
also
want
to
mention
a
couple
more
special
guests
who
are
with
us
today
that
I
didn't
mention
earlier.
We
have
deputy
felipe
colon
who
is
with
us.
A
I'll
now
present
to
you
vice
president
of
the
organization,
marilyn
rivera.
K
K
I
would
like
to
thank
all
the
community
members,
elected
officials,
community
stakeholders
and
friends
of
our
organization
who
are
here
today
to
celebrate
our
people.
Allow
me
to
also
express
my
gratitude
to
the
office
of
a
neighborhood
services,
property
management
office,
the
mayor's
office,
assisting
us
in
allowing
us
to
raise
our
beautiful
flag.
Today,
our
organization
depends
on
the
support
and
confidence
of
the
public
and
of
our
community
to
keep
us
thriving.
A
Please
face
the
united
states
flag
as
we
sing
the
national
or
as
china
sings.
Not
me
as
china
sings
a
national
anthem.
