Description
Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center (BCNC) celebrates it's 50th anniversary with a traditional Chinese tea ceremony lead by a professional "Tea Master."
A
Thank
you
for
being
here
good
afternoon.
Everybody
I
am
Giles
Lee
I'm,
the
executive
director
of
BC
NC.
A
Joining
us
today
for
the
kickoff
of
our
50th
anniversary
celebration,
BC
NC
started
50
years
ago
with
15
teenagers
in
a
summer
program.
Now
we
reach
8,000
people
in
four
locations
in
Boston
and
Quincy
50
years
later,
we're
still
creating
pathways
for
for
the
most
vulnerable
in
our
communities
toward
riders
to
a
brighter
future,
and
we
are
continuing
to
expand
our
impact.
Now.
Let
me
tell
you
a
little
bit
about
who
we
serve.
The
typical
DC
NC
family
has
two
children
with
parents
that
don't
speak.
A
A
A
rebellious
teenager
in
a
new
culture
and
a
new
age
and
in
a
new
era
of
Technology
BC
NC
meets
each
and
every
one
of
these
families
where
they
are
and
works
with
them
to
figure
out
how
to
get
to
the
next
stage
in
their
lives.
Now,
in
just
the
past
couple
of
years,
BC
NC
has
made
great
strides
that
nobody
could
have
foreseen
50
years
ago.
100
percent
of
our
high
school
seniors
graduate
and
go
to
college
with
financial
aid.
More
than
95
percent
of
them
are
first-generation
college
students.
A
Also
bolstered
our
ability
to
look
after
the
mental
health
of
our
families,
especially
young
parents,
to
ensure
that
our
most
vulnerable
neighbors
are
being
truly
supported
through
case
management
through
parenting
support
groups
through
play
music
and
art
therapy,
and
we
established
the
POW
Art
Center
this
beautiful
facility
that
we
are
in
today.
It's
the
first,
it's
a
first
of
its
kind
arts
and
cultural
institution
for
this
neighborhood
to
uplift,
marginalized
voices
of
our
community
and
amplify
asian-american
artists
of
all
stripes.
A
Now
all
of
these
accomplishments
have
been
possible
because
of
you
and
your
support
so
from
the
bottom
of
my
heart,
I
have
to
say
it's
this
year.
Thank
you
to
all
of
you,
I'd
like
to
take
a
minute
to
recognize
the
co-chairs
who
have
spearheaded
the
50th
anniversary
initiatives
for
BC
NC.
They
are
Peter
and
Rosana
Chao
Eleanor
and
Frank
Powell
and
Nancy
Adams
and
Scott
showing
thank
you.
A
And
thank
you
to
all
of
our
host
committee
members.
Many
of
our
host
committee
members
are
here
in
this
room
with
us
today.
There's
actually
too
many
to
mention
so
I
will
just
give
you
a
heartfelt
thank
you
as
well,
and
also
to
the
generous
sponsors
of
our
50th
anniversary,
many
of
whom
are
in
the
room
with
us
today.
I
also
have
to
give
you
a
big
shout
out
to
I,
also
want
to
say
a
sincere
thank
you
from
the
bottom
of
my
heart
to
the
elected
officials
who
have
joined
us
today.
A
It's
very
special
to
have
you
here
in
this
space
with
us,
so
on
behalf
of
BC
NC
and
the
families
we
serve.
Thank
you
for
making
the
time
to
be
with
us
here
today.
Governor
Baker,
mayor,
Walsh,
mayor
Koch,
representative,
mike
LeWitt's,
boston,
city,
councilor
flynn,
boston,
city,
councilor,
Michelle,
Wu
and
also
I
would
be
remiss
if
I
didn't
mention
a
former
state.
Senator
for
Ria's.
Here
is
what,
as
well
with
us
and
staff
in
the
offices
of
US
senators,
Warren
and
Markey
are
also
here.
So
thank
you
for
being
here
with
us.
B
Thank
you
very
much
it's
great
to
be
here
today.
I
want
to
thank
everyone.
I
want
to
wish
everyone
a
very
happy
new
year
and
I
want
to
thank
my
colleagues
that
are
here
and,
although
I
mentioned
already,
but
I
want
to
do
it
again,
because
it's
84
City
Council
in
this
is
District.
It's
City
Council
Michelle,
whose
district
city,
why
it's
animaker?
What's
this
district
to
state
representative
and
certainly
we're
on
the
circuit
right
now,
the
only
people
that
celebrate
New
Year
is
more
than
the
Chinese
of
the
Irish
and
st.
Patrick's
Day.
B
So
so
we
go
on
the
circuit,
so
I
want
to
thank
them
all.
Also,
my
dear
friend,
the
mayor
of
Quincy
CMH,
on
Coco's
with
us
as
well
and
I,
want
to
thank
the
mayor
for
being
here
today
and
obviously
the
governor
is
going
to
come
up
in
a
few
minutes
and
the
representatives
from
Senator,
Warren
and
Marquis
office.
Thank
you,
I.
Don't
think
you
can
be
said.
Any
better.
I
want
to
congratulate
the
Boston
Chinatown
neighborhood
association
on
50
years
of
not
just
existence
but
of
an
incredible
work.
B
Incredible
work
around
childcare
and
education
on
workforce
development,
on
intergenerational
support
as
well
for
different
generations
of
young
people
and
older
people.
I
want
to
thank
you
for
that.
The
support
of
immigrant
families,
especially
right
now
in
these
uncertain
times
in
our
country,
having
organizations
that
support
support
our
immigrants
is
truly,
it's
so
important
that
we
have
in
in
Boston.
28%
of
the
residents
that
live
in
our
city
are
foreign-born.
B
48%
of
the
people
of
in
our
city
are
first-generation
like
I
am
so
when
you
think
about
Boston,
and
you
think
about
immigration,
and
you
think
about
immigrants.
We
are
an
immigrant
city
and
it's
something
that
we're
proud
of
in
the
city
of
Boston
and
we're
products
of
support,
support
our
immigrants
and
work
with
our
immigrants,
because
many
of
the
businesses
we
have
in
that
communities
are
even
getting
run.
Businesses
and
if
you
leave
this
building
and
you
walk
through
Chinatown
and
you
look
around
99.9%
of
the
businesses
in
this
community.
B
We
spend
a
lot
of
time
in
our
office
myself
and
the
counselors
and
the
reps,
preserving
this
neighborhood
and
preserving
the
traditions
and
cultures
of
this
neighborhood
and
and
part
of
that
was.
We
were
able
to
open
a
new
library
and
we're
working
on
a
permanent
home
for
the
library
part
of
that
is
working
with
businesses.
Part
of
that
is
what
we're
doing
with
economic
development,
and
we
have
to
be.
We
have
to
continue
to
work
in
this
together.
B
C
Thank
you
very
much
mayor
Walsh
and,
as
he
said,
this
is
the
year
of
the
pig
so
happy
New
Year
to
all
of
us
here.
We
are
absolutely
delighted
with
the
turnout,
with
the
incredible
array
of
people
here:
supporters,
friends,
board
members
and
particularly
our
public
officials.
As
Giles
noted,
this
is
the
kickoff
to
a
celebration
that
will
culminate
at
the
end
of
May
at
our
fiftieth
anniversary
gala
on
the
30th
of
May,
so
I
hope
all
of
you
can
join
us,
particularly.
D
So
just
wrote
down
the
date
of
the
shower,
so
I
can
get
back
and
get
back
to
my
office,
and
my
team
will
tell
me
we
don't
schedule
stuff
that
far
in
advance,
then
I'll
say
we'll
just
pencil
it
in
and
we'll
see
what
happens.
Let
me
just
start
first
of
all,
I
said
to
the
mayor
when
he
sat
down
that
he
pretty
much
gave
my
speech
so
I'm
just
gonna
kind
of
wing
it
here,
but
let
me
start
with
where
he
finished,
which
is
50th
anniversary.
D
Okay,
50
years
is
a
long
time
and
it's
an
especially
significant
accomplishment
for
an
organization
that
is
as
strong
and
as
vibrant
as
this
one,
and
usually
there
are
a
number
of
elements
that
come
with
being
able
to
be
successful
and
impactful.
For
what
at
this
point
is
two
generations
and
what
will
certainly
be
far
more
than
that
under
Charles's
leadership
and
the
work
of
the
board?
D
D
A
lot
in
public
life,
if
we
spend
a
lot
of
time
and
about
and
I
think
everybody
who's
here,
who's
part
of
public
life
does
do.
That
is
the
the
sense
that
a
lot
of
people
have
about
a
loss
of
community,
a
loss
of
connection
and
a
loss
of
sort
of
where
my
peeps,
for
a
lack
of
a
better
way
to
put
it
and
I.
D
Think,
as
my
daughter
would
say,
I
think
one
of
the
things
that
this
organization
provides
is
a
real
sense
of
community
and
a
real
sense
of
connection
for
the
folks
who
are
part
of
this
community
and
part
of
this
region
running
from
here
all
the
way
up
route
3
to
to
Quincy
and
I.
Think
in
some
ways.
D
In
fact,
it's
exemplary
and
I
think
it
speaks
really
well
to
the
leadership
and
the
staff
and
the
sort
of
ear
to
the
ground
that
you've
been
able
to
bring
to
what
you're
up
to
and
who
you're
serving
and
what
you're
about
year
after
year
after
year
and
and
I'm
just
here
today
to
say:
congratulations,
I,
look
forward
to
the
culmination
of
this
on
the
30th
of
May
an
event.
I
will
be
attending
with
all
of
my
colleagues
here
from
exactly
I.
D
A
A
A
So
you
know
we've
we've
grown
to
be
able
to
reach
over
8,000
people
each
year,
not
because
of
one
grant
the
one
leader
or
one
idea,
but
really
because
of
all
the
people,
though
entire
community
that
has
come
together
to
support
us
and
then
help
us
grow.
It's
really
because
of
all
of
you
that
we
are
here
today
and
that's
why
we
think
it's
fitting
to
kick
off
our
anniversary
year
with
the
traditional
tea
ceremony
to
bring
us
all
together,
so
serving
tea
is
considered
the
ultimate
form
of
hospitality.
A
In
many
cultures
the
tea
serves
to
greet
people
to
bring
them
together
and
unify
them
and
to
promote
good
health
and
wellness
of
body
and
spirit.
You
know
by
coming
together,
through
this
ceremony,
we
express
our
shared
commitment
to
empowering
the
communities
we
serve,
and
it's
in
this
shared
commitment
that
together
we
can
build
brighter
futures
for
our
families.
Today,
tea
master,
Shing
tides
on
will
prepare
woolum
tea
from
his
hometown
in
Fujian
Province
in
China.
A
E
Pc
NC,
so
today
we
are
going
to
have
a
special
ceremony.
It's
called
my
love
tea
ceremony,
so
everything
will
participate
so
but
you're
not
serving
yourself.
Okay,
so
it's
you
are
serving
the
wild
right.
Besides
you,
for
example,
mayor
wash
is
going
to
serve
governor
Baker,
then
governor,
because
canister.
E
E
The
hometown
of
the
Boston
Tea
Party
T,
so
we
occurred
in
the
first
one
we
are
serving
is
called
blooming
tea,
so
we
are
going
to
I'm
going
to
serve
it
so
its
meaning,
like
everybody,
we
have
a
prosperous
new
year,
so
the
second
T
will
be
record.
Health
god
is
T,
so
means
it's
at
eve
of
anti-cancer,
antioxidant
and
and
the
obesity
so
you're
praying
everybody
health
and
happiness.
So
last
thing
I
want
to
say
very
briefly
about
myself.
My
name
is
ching
chong,
also
known
as
dr.
t.
E
Yes?
Why?
Because
this
is
like
a
code
by
Preston,
HW,
Bush
and
Barbara
Bush,
when
I'm
serving
them
tea
by
invited
by
Chinese
Coburg,
consider
generous
and
also
I'm
the
harbor
ceasefire
of
at
Harbor
University
and
the
post
associate
at
MIT.
Also
the
president
of
what
your
inhalation
and
meloxicam
so
I
hope
everybody
enjoyed
tea
and
besides
Mayo,
please
say:
enjoy
tea
to
the
one
besides
you,
so
everybody
do
that.
Okay,
so
I
wish
everybody
enjoy
tea
and
Happy
New
Year
happy
lives.
Oh
sorry,
OB
C&C!
Thank
you
very
much.
