On Ferry Dock at Fan Pier in South Boston, the Boston Police Department christened a new BPD Harbor Unit boat named in honor of Officer Jeremiah Hurley, who was killed in the line of duty on October 28th, 1991. Mayor Walsh joined Police Commissioner William Evans and members of Officer Hurley's family for the ceremony.

it
was

the
assistance

we
were
able
to
match
the
port
security
grant
fund
that
made
this
new
responsible
possible
furlough,
possibly
travel
patrol
members,
retired
and
active
president
has
today
members
of
the
Boston
port
community,
with
the
Mike
Fennell
of
the
fan,
Thea
Corporation
and
all
of
the
guests
that
are
here
today.

briefly,
possibly
travel
to
throw
a
year
was
found
in
1853
and
when
we're
thinking
about
names
for
our
new
boat
over
the
course
of
the
past
hundred
sixty
years
has
been
many
names
that
have
reoccurred
on
on
vessels.
Guardian

names
have
been
in
continuous

over

years,
but
when
considering
that
name,
we
felt
what
better
way
to
pay
tribute
to
a
fallen
police
officer
and
dedicate
a
new
response
boat
to
off
to
Jeremiah
early.

of
that
is
that
boat
would
also
be
crewed
by
his
stepson
dr.

harbor
of
your

an

Jerry
rarely
lived
with
integrity.
He
was
known
throughout
the
department

his
character

certainly

his
courage
and
as
a
police

spent
more
than
two
over
two
decades
protecting

people

our

papers
spent
a
lifetime
loving
his
family,
his
friends
and
certainly
a
city.
He
died
the
way
he
lived
doing
the
right
thing
and
the
brave
flame.

ever
replace
a
loss

such
a
great
man,
but

can
honor
his
memory
every
single
day,
the
Boston
Police
Department
honors
him

upholding

highest
standards
of
excellence

integrity,

son

boat

certainly
going

strengthen
the
Boston
Police
Department.

give
our
Harbor
unit
the
tools
it
needs
to
perform
a
rescue
operations
faster
and
more
effectively.

will
support
SWAT,
hazmat

maritime
defense
operations,
and
it
will
help
our
officers
collaborate
on
a
regional
public
safety
effort.
As
a
matter
of
fact,
next
weekend
we
have
one
of
those
reasonable
public
safety
efforts
when
we
have
the
tall
ships
coming
in
to
the
Boston
Harbor,
so
the
Jeremiah
Jay
really
will
be
probably
out
in
the
harbor.

we
see
some
of
the
historic
history
comes
into
Boston
Harbor,
the
Jeremiah

Hurley
doing
it
will
help
State
Boston,
Police,
Department,
save
lives.
I
can't
imagine
a
more
fitting
way
to
honor
a
true
Boston
hero.

Department
of
Homeland
Security
and
the
Boston
Police
Foundation
for
investing
in
our
city

be
an
aspect

Safety

how
the

is
now
the
eighth
best
city

as
far
as
being
a
livable
city

quality
of
life
and
one
of
the
main
ingredients
was
the
safety

city

this
department
does
every
day
it
makes
the

of
the
safest
only
in
the
United
States,
but
in

the
country.

to
the
great
effort
of
your

son,

a
positive
outcome

patrol

such

vital
partner
to
the
Coast
Guard.

the
rescue

in
need
or
ensuring

security

the
port
delivering
a
SWAT
team.

sergeant

his
team
are
always
ready
to
support
and
return
respond
and
this
boat

the
collective
capability,
the
Harbor
Patrol,
will
be
a
huge
force
multiplier
and
it
will
happen
during
scale
Boston,

mayor

which
begins
next
week
and
it's
a
huge

event
for
us.

grateful

the
professionals
in
our
commitment
of
sergeant
eavers,
the
quiet
leadership
in
Boston
Harbor
master
has
been
absolutely
essential
to
the
well-being
of
this
port.
So
let's
talk
a
little
bit
about
this
incredible
boat.
It
takes
a
lot
to
incite
Coast
Guard,
outboard
NV,
so
I
can
say
when
I
look
at
this
code,
I
can't
even
imagine
how
how
fast
they
can
go
so
achievers
promises
me
a
ride,
and
what
I
want
to
say
is
that
in
this
business,
in
this
kind
of
maritime
environment,
it
comes
down
to
minutes
even
seconds.

The
water
here
is
frigid
most
of
the
year
and
the
maritime
environment
is
absolutely
unforgiving,
and
this
boat
has
already
plucked
at
least
two
people,
a
mother
and
son
out
from
the
harbor
in
the
South
channel,
because
they
were
there
within
seconds.
I
have
no
doubt
that
they
might
have
lost
their
lives,
and
so,
when
I
get
those
calls
and
I,
my
heart
is
racing
until
I
hear
hey
Boston,
Harbor
police
just
called
these
guys
out.

back

thousand
