From YouTube: Winter Preparedness 12-13-21
Description
Mayor Wu hosts a press conference to discuss preparation for upcoming winter weather.
A
A
Today
is
a
brief
update
on
some
of
those
efforts
and
again
I
can
see
a
bit
of
the
team,
but
I'll
call
out
a
few
of
our
department,
heads
and
and
chiefs
who
are
are
a
critical
part
of
this
work.
A
A
We
have
164
pieces
of
in-house
snow
clearing
equipment
with
the
ability
to
put
more
than
800
pieces
on
the
roads
during
larger
storms
to
assist
with
snow
and
ice
clearing
efforts.
Public
works
has
added
five
small
dump
trucks
with
plows
and
salt
spreaders,
nine
pickup
trucks
with
plows
and
salt
spreaders
and
four
large
dump
trucks
with
plows
and
spreaders
totaling
18
pieces
of
new
equipment,
plus
10
additional
plow
blades
to
replace
old
ones,
complying
with
social
distancing
guidelines.
A
I
wanna
this
will
be
one
of
many
reminders
on
this
front,
but
as
we
are
headed
into
snow,
if
a
snowed
emergency
is
declared,
please
be
sure
to
move
your
vehicle
if
necessary,
when
that
parking
ban
takes
effect.
So
a
couple
reminders
for
for
residents
the
sidewalk
in
front
of
private
property
is
the
responsibility
of
the
property
owner
to
shovel
and
de-ice
there.
Okay
I'll
come
back
to
that
point
later
we
ask
that
anyone
who's
able
to
help
shovel
out
fire,
hydrants
and
storm
drains
on
your
street.
A
A
If
you
are
an
older
resident
in
boston,
we
have
resources
to
help
you.
If
you
qualify,
we
can
help
you
access
important
benefits
like
fuel
assistance,
utility
discounts
or
help
with
home
repair.
I
was
just
visiting
with
the
golden
airs
club
at
the
freedom
house
and
met
one
of
our
seniors,
miss
smith,
who
shared
with
me.
A
How
easy
it
was
how
fast
it
was
to
get
her
burner
fixed
when
she
reached
out
and
called
311
that
the
city's
department
of
neighborhood
development
was
offering
to
send
folks
out
that
very
same
day
that
she
called
she
actually
was
busy
that
friday.
So
they
came
back
on
monday,
but
I
was
very
grateful
to
tell
chief
dylan
about
how
quickly
her
team
is
working
to
ensure
that
our
seniors
have
supports.
A
A
Tenants
experiencing
problems
with
heating
systems
should
contact
contact
your
landlord
or
property
manager
immediately
in
the
cold
if
they
are
unresponsive.
For
any
reason,
please
reach
out
to
the
inspectional
services
department.
Commissioner
lydon
will
make
sure
that
gets
taken
care
of
at
617-635-5300.
A
For
residents
who
are
experiencing
homelessness,
cold
weather
presents
a
special
danger.
Every
year
we
work
with
our
shelters
and
street
outreach
teams
to
make
sure
we
have
safe
shelter
for
everyone
in
need.
During
weather
emergencies
like
snow
or
extreme
cold.
We
do
extensive,
coordinated
street
outreach
with
our
partners
to
ensure
that
we
get
individuals
into
shelter.
A
As
always,
I
and
the
boston
public
health
commission
and
our
entire
city
encourage
bostonians
to
get
tested,
vaccinated
and
boosted.
I
got
my
booster
shot,
thursday
in
city
hall.
I
was
feeling
it
a
little
bit
all
day
friday,
but
it
was
fast.
It
was
convenient.
It
was
free
and
I'm
so
proud
that
we
saw
nearly
400
residents
boosted
just
that
day
at
just
that
site
alone,
and
we
have
sites
throughout
the
city
and
in
our
neighborhoods
at
our
clinics
partnering
with
various
organizations.
B
Thank
you,
mayor
and
good
morning,
everyone
I'll
be
very
brief.
As
I
know,
everyone
wants
to
hear
from
aisha
on
space
savers
this
morning,
I'm
very
proud
to
stand
here
this
morning
with
a
very
strong
team
of
men
and
women
from
boston
public
works.
The
mayor
hit
on
a
lot
of
key
points
about
numbers
of
pieces
of
equipment,
a
tonnage
of
salt
and
some
plans
that
we
have
based
around
covid.
B
Everything
that
we
will
that
we
will
be
rolling
out
will
be
through
that
lens,
keeping
both
employees
safe
contractors
safe
to
ensure
that
we're
keeping
the
city's
roadways
safe.
We
have
the
care
in
custody
of
850
miles
of
road
lane,
which
can
be
difficult
through
mother
nature.
What
what
she
throws
at
us
by
way
of
snow
ice,
small
scale,
events,
large
scale
events,
but
I'm
very
proud
and
very
happy
to
stand
with
the
men
and
women
of
public
works
to
do
this
job
throughout
the
winter
months,
I'll
pass
off
now
to
sheila
dillon.
C
Thank
you,
michael
I'll,
be
brief,
too
it's
cold.
The
mayor
is
right.
We've
been
working
very,
very
hard,
putting
together
a
plan
to
make
sure
our
homeless
are
safe.
This
winter,
the
boston,
public
health,
commission,
saint
francis
house,
the
boston
rescue
mission,
pine
street
bridge
over
troubled
waters
and
the
new
england
center
for
homeless
veterans
have
over
one
thousand
beds
of
emergency
shelter.
This
number
includes
beds
for
women,
men
and
young
adults
on
cold
and
stormy
nights.
C
The
shelters
are
talking,
they're,
very
well
coordinated,
to
make
sure
that
everyone
who
shows
up
at
the
front
door
has
an
accommodation,
also
city
agencies,
along
with
our
non-profit
partners.
I've
been
working
really
hard
to
house
as
many
homeless,
individuals
and
families,
as
we
can
before
the
winter
months.
These
are
these
efforts
are
the
right
thing
to
do,
of
course,
but
they
also
relieve
pressure
in
our
shelters.
C
As
importantly,
the
commonwealth
of
massachusetts
has
been
bringing
on
sites
for
this
winter,
outside
of
boston
in
greater
boston,
worcester
and
several
communities
in
the
western
part
of
the
state.
This
keeps
individuals
in
close
to
their
communities
of
origin,
and
it
also
relieves
the
shelters
here
in
boston.
C
So
once
again,
I'm
going
to
say
it
again.
If
you
see
anyone
a
homeless,
individual
that
looks
vulnerable,
cold
call,
9-1-1,
do
not
hesitate
and
they'll
be
dispatched
to
make
sure
that
that
individual
is
safe.
I
also
just
want
to
reiterate
and
emphasize
what
the
mayor
said
about
our
seniors,
especially
senior
homeowners
call
3-1-1.
If
you
have
any
housing
emergency,
especially
a
heat
emergency,
do
not
hesitate.
C
We
do
dispatch
24
7
to
make
sure
your
heat
is
working
and
we
do
have
a
wonderful
program.
Senior
saves
where,
if
you
call
635
home
or
311,
we
will
enroll
you
in
a
program
for
a
new
boiler
that,
with
an
eight
thousand
000
credit
and
really
wonderful,
supports
to
get
you
a
new
heating
system
this
winter.
So
I
we
really
appreciate
your
cooperation
this
winter,
and
I
look
forward
to
working
with
you
all
with
that.
I'm
going
to
hand
it
over
to
aisha
miller,
chief
of
civic
engagement.
Thank
you.
D
D
I
also
would
like
to
mention
our
liaisons.
Each
neighborhood
has
a
liaison
in
their
disrespective
neighborhoods.
They
work
very
closely
with
city
departments,
boston,
police
department,
boston,
fire,
boston,
transportation
and
public
works
department.
Please
visit
boston.gov,
slash
ons
to
find
your
neighborhood
liaison
and
information
on
resources
that
are
available
to
you
in
your
neighborhood
neighbors.
Please
be
good
to
each
other,
look
out
for
each
other,
especially
our
elderly
and
our
disabled.
D
D
A
Today
we
have
been
working
hard
on
this
issue
and
I'll
invite
mike
up
here
as
well.
You
know
staffing
is
a
challenge
and
and
because
of
that,
the
city
has
been
working
hard
way
in
advance.
There's
been
just
one
snow
so
far,
and
we
we
had
enough
on
the
road
at
that
point.
But
commission,
you
want
to
add
anything
on
this.
B
Yes,
so
yep.
Currently,
we
are
well
staffed.
We
have
yet
to
see
that
loss
in
personnel
that
people
are
talking
about
statewide,
but
we're
also
going
to
keep
an
eye
on
that
as
this
winter
unfolds.
Obviously,
as
as
months
go
on
snowstorms
go
on,
we,
you
know,
you
tend
to
lose
some
folks
add
some
folks,
but
as
of
right
now
we
feel
safe
and
comfortable
with
that
number.
E
D
B
As
right
now,
everything
is
would
be
standard
towards
any
other
normal
winter.
A
And
I'll
just
add
that
it's
working
with
all
of
our
departments,
it
will
be
very
important
for
those
who
are
our
essential
workers
to
continue
to
have
access
to
testing
and
any
resources
to
stay
safe
from
covet
as
well.
So
we
are
very
carefully
watching
to
ensure
that
we're
not
affected
by
by
staffing,
because
we're
able
to
make
those
copied
protections
possible
accessible
as
well.
E
A
We
are
we're
we're
been
having
conversations
with
the
state
about
the
possibility
for
remote
learning,
especially
as
it
comes
to
covid,
19
and
closures
or
or
other
instances.
So
far,
we
have
been
encouraged
and
are
encouraging
our
our
schools
to
to
really
focus
on
in-person
learning.
So
as
we
head
into
snowstorms,
we
the
the
plan
right
now.
As
I
understand
it,
is
that
there
will
be
snow
storms
snow
days
rather
than
than
remote
days.
But
I
will
make
sure
that
we
correct
that
if
that's
not
accurate,.
B
So
we
contract
a
good
portion
of
our
snow
workout
across
the
city.
We've
got
nine
snow
contractors.
We
do
pay
a
premium
as
a
as
a
major
city.
We
tend
to
pay
more
than
the
smaller
towns
and
cities
across
the
state.
So
so
far,
we've
gotten
the
firm
commitment
from
all
nine
contractors
that
they've
got
the
drivers
to
man
their
trucks.
B
A
A
major
priority
will
be
ensuring
that
the
contracting
opportunities
reflect
the
city
of
boston,
and
this
is
one
of
the
one
of
the
departments
and
places
where
we'll
be
really
focusing
on
ensuring
that
we're
bringing
in
boston
residents,
businesses
of
color
businesses
owned
by
residents
of
color
and
throughout
the
ways
that
our
city
contracts
will
be
turning
over.
To
ensure
that
we're
closing
the
racial
wealth
gap
through
the
the
dollars
that
we
are
putting
out
into
the
community.
C
C
So
the
the
tiny
homes
being
brought
on
at
the
shadow
campus
are
being
sort
of
managed
by
the
state
and
we
are
hearing
mid-december,
that
those
are
going
to
be
operational.
They've
been
they've.
Also,
we've
all
been
dealing
with
staffing
issues,
but
they
feel
they're
very,
very
close
to
having
them
fully
staffed.
A
The
mask
mandate
will
stay
in
place
as
the
numbers
demand
it
and
we
are
unfortunately
seeing
a
surge
in
the
wastewater
data
in
the
accounts
that
are
coming
in
from
our
boston,
public
health,
commission
and
so
we're
taking
every
possible
action
now
to
continue
closing
vaccination
gaps.
But
as
new
variants
are
here,
we
will
be
keeping
the
mass
mandate
in
place.
A
The
first
step
in
the
transitional
housing
pipeline
means
that
we
will
be
putting
more
resources
and
and
looking
to
ensure
people
are
getting
the
supports
that
they
need
and
really
change
the
dynamic
here
in
in
the
area
near
mass
avenue
cast
boulevard
and
with
our
opiate
crisis
substance,
mental
health
and
homelessness.
City-Wide.
F
A
Yeah
we
are,
I
heard
about
it,
the
same,
probably
the
same
time
that
you
did
and
it's
been
a
subject
of
conversation
both
the
time
period,
as
well
as
a
connection
to
paratransit
and
the
ride.
These
are
two
pieces
that
we're
looking
to
work
through
with
the
tee
and
to
replicate
the
success
that
other
cities
across
massachusetts
have
had
with
similar
longer
term
pilots.
We
know
that
for
the
impact
to
truly
reach
every
resident
in
our
communities,
every
small
business
along
our
neighborhood
main
street
corridors,
it
needs
to
be
longer
than
just
a
few
months.
A
A
We
are
looking
at
different
ways
of
how
a
how
the
the
pilot
would
be
defined
and
that
the
funding
would
be
coming
from
the
city
of
boston
in
this
case
rather
than
the
mbta
itself,
is
one
piece
of
it.
But
we
are
in
a
moment
of
urgency
when
it
comes
to
addressing
our
economic
recovery,
our
climate
crisis,
our
racial
wealth
gap
and
I'm
focused
on
figuring
out
the
solutions
not
staying
stuck
on
the
same
barriers
that
have
kept
us
from
taking
action
in
the
past.
