From YouTube: Boston Harborfest 2019 Opening Ceremony
Description
The annual Harborfest festivities begin with a ceremony held at Faneuil Hall. Representatives from the United States Coast Guard and the City of Boston were on hand to help cut the traditional cake and kick off the start of the 4th of July celebrations in Boston.
A
Good
morning,
everyone
and
welcome
my
name
is
Martha
Sheridan.
Oh
boy
got
a
little
technical
difficulty
here,
I'm
the
CEO
of
the
Greater
Boston
Convention
and
Visitors
Bureau
I'm,
actually
relatively
new
to
my
position
celebrating
six
months
on
the
job
today
and
it's
a
real
pleasure
to
be
here
to
serve
as
your
emcee
for
the
opening
ceremony
for
Harborfest.
Again,
this
is
my
first
Harborfest
but
I
do
know.
Thank
you
very
much.
A
They
also
could
use
the
stool
back
here,
but
that's
okay
and
I
do
know
that
it
is
the
oldest
and
largest
fourth
of
July
celebration
in
the
country.
We
have
a
lot
of
great
speakers
and
activities
in
store
for
you
for
this
opening
ceremony
and,
of
course,
some
great
cake
coming
soon.
So
it
is
at
first
my
pleasure
to
introduce
the
joint
United
States
Coast
Guard
and
United
States
Navy
USS
Constitution
collar
guard
to
post
the
colors.
C
D
C
D
A
E
How
are
we
doing
today?
Everybody
you
ready
for
a
great
hoppy,
fest
excellent.
My
name
is
Ken
perset
I'm,
the
director
of
tourism
for
the
Martin
Martin
J
Walsh,
on
behalf
of
the
mayor
I'd
like
to
thank
you
all
for
helping
us
kick
off
the
38th
annual
Harborfest
I
want
to
recognize
all
the
veterans
military
personnel
here
today.
Can
we
give
them
a
round
of
applause?
Please
I.
E
Is
the
perfect
place
for
us
to
kick
off
the
festivities
today,
Daniel
Hall
was
a
sight
of
revolutionary
speeches,
anti-slavery
demonstrations
and
presidential
debates.
For
decades
it
was
the
headquarters
of
Lawsons
maritime
trade
and
now
the
anchor
for
our
tourism
industry
Harborfest
is
a
celebration
of
that
heritage.
I'm
proud
to
say
that
this
is
the
biggest
independent
celebration
in
America
every
year.
It
draws
thousands
of
visitors
and
invites
Bostonians
to
learn
something
new
about
our
city.
It
brings
history
to
life
in
our
Harbor
in
our
streets
and
it
shows
how
important
our
waterfront
is.
E
Today,
it's
patriotic
it's
educational
and
most
of
all
its
final
Harbor
festival
features
hundreds
of
events
to
mark
Independence
Day.
They
will
highlight
our
deep
colonial
roots
and
celebrate
our
beautiful
waterfront
neighborhoods.
These
sites
run
from
child's
town
to
the
North
End,
to
downtown,
to
the
wharfs
and
to
South
Boston
and
don't
miss
the
city's
own
Independence
Day
parade,
which
starts
right
at
City.
Hall
plaza
starting
Thursday
at
9:00
a.m.
I
want
to
thank
everyone
who
worked
so
hard
to
make
this
year's
Harborfest
a
success
and
the
best
one.
E
Yet
thank
you
to
the
members
of
the
Armed
Forces.
Thank
you
to
the
cultural
organizations
that
make
the
events.
Those
and,
most
importantly,
thank
you
to
all
the
residents
of
the
city
of
Boston
for
welcoming
all
of
our
tourists
today.
I
want
to
highlight
a
few
things
that
are
gonna
be
happening
today
at
Harborfest,
starting
at
noon
for
July,
2nd
from
noon
to
2:00
at
Downtown,
Crossing
they're
gonna
have
bring
back
our
Chowderfest
where
you
get
to
go
and
have
samples
of
all
different
types
of
chowder
tonight.
E
For
the
first
time
we're
going
to
have
a
harbor,
a
Parade
of
Lights,
which
is
going
to
start
at
8:45
in
the
Inner
Harbor.
When
we'll
have
boats
decorated
with
lights
and
they're
going
to
sail
along
the
harbour
so
there's
great
places.
You
can
watch
that
and
after
that,
there's
going
to
be
fireworks
which
we've
presented
by
Harborfest
and
Boston
harbor
cruises
at
9:15
tonight,
and
then,
of
course,
the
city
will
sponsor
its
annual
July
4th
parade
and
that
will
start
at
9:00
a.m.
on
Thursday,
so
everyone
who's
here
visiting
the
city.
A
Thank
you
Ken
for
describing
that
great
lineup
of
events
and
I
think
it's
worth
noting.
Ken
welcomed
visitors
here,
but
the
what's
special
about
this
particular
event
is
that
it's
geared
towards
visitors
and
residents
alike,
so
there's
plenty
of
activity
to
keep
everyone
busy
from
now
through
the
end
of
the
week.
Now
it's
my
distinct
pleasure
to
introduce
Rear
Admiral
Andrew
Thompson
Thompson,
commander
First
Coast,
Guard
district
United,
States,
Coast,
Guard
and
joining
him
is
Rear.
F
All
right
good
morning,
Boston
Oh.
Could
we
try
that
one
more
time
good
morning
Boston?
It's
always
nice
to
be
on
the
microphone
side
right.
It
sounds
much
louder
when
we
do
that.
But
let
me
before
I
get
into
the
remarks
ahead.
I
want
to
do
a
special
thank
you,
because
I
thought
that
was
extremely
great
and
we've
been
entertained
most
of
the
morning
here
by
the
Middlesex
County
volunteers,
that
joint
Coast,
Guard
and
navy
color
guard
that
just
came
by
and
make
sure
I
get
this
right.
Gillian,
homemaker
ho
ho
bake,
hope.
F
F
So
I'm
excited
to
be
here
today,
I
think
it's
awesome
to
be
here
to
kick
off
this
38th
annual
Harborfest
here
in
Boston
I,
believe
the
goals
are
to
have
fun,
I'm,
going
to
say,
safe
and
secure,
but
lots
of
fun
right
and
I
think
that
works
out
well
and
I.
Think
it's
also
to
celebrate
the
history
of
this
Harbor
here
in
Boston,
which
is
about
well,
which
is
as
old
as
our
country
and
then
I
would
be
remiss
as
a
Coast
Guard
Admiral.
F
That's
here
that
oversees
all
of
the
Coast
Guard
operations
within
Boston,
as
well
as
all
of
New
England,
to
not
say
that.
Yes,
there's
a
rich
history
here
for
Boston
in
the
harbor.
It's
also
a
rich
history
here
with
the
United
States
Coast
Guard,
as
well
as
the
United
States
Navy,
and
you
know
I'll
start
by
saying
the
Coast
Guard.
That's
a
new
name
for
us,
it's
about
a
hundred
years
old,
but
it's
a
new
name
for
us
and
that
started
about
1915.
F
Prior
to
that,
we
were
a
couple
of
other
services
and
it
really
started
in
1790
when
Alexander
Hamilton,
who
was
the
first
secretary
of
treasury
for
our
nation,
said
we
need.
We
need
to
have
something
out
here.
There's
a
lot
of
ships
that
come
in
to
places
like
Boston
for
all
of
this
maritime
trade.
F
We
need
to
have
some
ships
out
there
to
enforce
our
fledgling
country
customs
laws,
and
he
did
so
and
he
created
the
United
States
Coast
Guard,
and
where
do
you
think
the
first
Coast
Guard
Cutter
at
that
time
was
built
well
just
outside
just
outside
of
here,
but
it
was
a
Newburyport
and
the
first
one
built
was
called
the
u.s.
Revenue
Cutter
Massachusetts
right
here
in
Newburyport
in
about
1792.
F
So
again
our
history
goes
back
just
as
far
as
as
a
nation's
history
goes
back
and
that's
one
of
the
one
of
the
predecessor
predecessors
to
the
Coast
Guard,
the
u.s.
Revenue
Cutter
service,
there's
another
one,
that's
out
there
too,
and
that
was
called
the
u.s.
lighthouse
service.
Does
anybody
know
of
this
big
light?
That's
right
out
here
in
the
middle
of
the
harbor,
also
known
as
Boston
Life
right,
Boston
light.
That's
how
old
that
one
is
that's
about
that
predates
our
country!
F
That
light
was
established
in
1716
in
just
just
a
couple
of
years
ago
the
city
celebrated
its
300th
anniversary
and
today
that
still
remains
part
of
the
u.s.
Coast
Guard
and
it's
actually
the
last
manned
lighthouse
of
the
United
States
Coast
Guard,
and
it's
it's
Bandar.
Well,
it's
man,
it's
manned
by
a
woman.
The
keeper
is
dr.,
Sally
Goodman,
right
stoven,
dr.
F
Sally,
stolen
it
she's
out
there,
keeping
that
light
for
all
of
the
Mariners
that
came
in
here,
because
that's
how
people
came
into
the
city
and
made
the
city
what
it
is
today,
I
think
in
terms
of
maritime
trade
and
and
what
we
heard
a
little
bit
earlier.
Boston
light
one
of
those
signals
of
safety.
F
So
again,
our
history
goes
that
far
back
and
then
certainly
you
can't
you
can't
help
but
visit
Boston
and
then
see
the
wonderful
ship
that
we
still
have
here.
The
warship,
the
USS
Constitution,
which
is
commanded.
The
commander,
is
right
here
with
that
vessel.
So
a
lot
of
maritime
history,
absolutely
a.
F
G
Good
morning,
everyone
a
lot
of
you
with
backpacks,
welcome
to
Boston
we're
a
city
that
celebrates
Independence
Day.
All
week
yesterday,
Downtown
Crossing
kicked
off
the
week
with
pop-up
fenders.
We
had
food
vendors,
we
had
two
entertainment
stages.
We
had
roving
musicians,
a
children's
play
area,
arts
and
crafts
market
and
plein
air
artists
were
out
walking
all
up
and
down
of
Washington
Street.
The
district
is
dressed
in
red,
white
and
blue
and
there
are
flags
everywhere.
G
Downtown
Crossing
is
the
busiest
pedestrian
area
in
New
England,
it's
home
to
the
old
Statehouse
and
lots
of
sites
along
Boston's,
Freedom,
Trail,
we're
honored
to
partner
with
Harborfest
this
year
and
hopefully
for
many
more
years
to
come
to
celebrate
America's
birthday
this
morning,
downtown
Boston's
official,
fourth
of
July
balloon
arch,
went
up
on
Washington
Street,
just
a
few
blocks
from
here,
and
we
are
hosting
Chowderfest
by
the
arch
this
afternoon.
It's
a
free
event
open
to
all
it
kicks
off
at
noon.
Today,
you'll
see
our
friendly
bid
ambassadors
walking
around.
G
G
We
at
the
bid
want
to
give
a
special
thanks
to
the
Convention
and
Visitors
Bureau
to
all
of
the
historic
sites
who
are
participating
this
week
to
the
Armed
Forces
and
to,
of
course,
to
mayor
Walsh
and
his
entire
leadership
for
their
vision
and
worked
to
make
Boston
one
of
the
most
welcoming
safe
and
accessible
cities
in
the
country.
Thank
you
for
coming,
welcome
and
happy.
Fourth,.
B
A
You
Pam
and
I
do
want
to
acknowledge
the
great
work
that
the
downtown
business
improvement
district
does.
If
you
haven't
been
to
that
section
of
the
city
recently,
certainly
do
take
advantage
of
this
event
to
check
it
out.
They've
done
some
really
wonderful
things
and
I
do
want
to
give
a
shout
out
to
Rosemarie
Sansone
who's,
the
executive
director
of
the
Improvement
District,
who
could
not
be
with
us
today,
but
is
a
driving
force
behind
a
lot
of
what
happens
in
that
area.
A
Speaking
of
very
exciting
and
fun
areas
where,
of
course,
in
a
an
iconic
location
here
in
Boston
right
now,
and
it
gives
me
a
great
pleasure
to
introduce
another
partner,
Harborfest
partner,
Joe
O'malley
he's
the
general
manager
of
the
Fanueil,
Hall,
Marketplace
and,
of
course,
he's
the
the
host
of
our
kickoff
celebration
today.
So
Joe.
H
Welcome
everybody,
good
news,
I'll
be
very
brief
round
of
applause
for
the
band.
Please
one
more
round
of
applause
I'm,
the
only
thing
standing
in
the
way
of
you
and
cake
so
I'll
keep
it
simple.
There's
a
hundred
hundreds
of
events
going
off
of
Harborfest.
We
also
have
events
down
here
at
Faneuil,
Hall
Marketplace,
very
grateful
to
have
you
guys
here.
Please
support
our
local
merchants
shop
at
our
shops,
eat
it
out,
restaurants,
drink
at
our
bars
and
just
enjoy
yourselves,
please
so
again
without
further
ado,
let's
roll
out
the
cake!
Thank
you.
