of
Mayors
and

to

all
the

for
covering
this
meeting.
I
want
to
thank
the
president,
the
conference
Mayor
Steve
Benjamin
of
Columbia
South
Carolina.

National
conversation
we're
certainly
looking
forward
to
to
being
able
to
talk
about
what
we're
doing
in
on
hospitals,
universities,
high-tech
biotech
industries,
we're
looking
forward
to
working
collectively,
together
on
innovation,
collaboration,
advancing
solutions
to
some
of
the
toughest
problems
facing
the
American
people,
and
certainly
in
our
cities
here
in
America,
and
that's
what
this
conference
is
dedicated
to
it's
a
national
conversation
with
real
leadership
that
produces
real
action.

meetings,
and
what's
amazing
about
this,
is
we
had
Democrats?
We
have
Republicans,
we
are
independents
and
we
focus
on
the
issues
that
are
important
to
the
people
in
our
cities.

go

party
politics
and
that's
what
I
think
is
really
one
of
the
special
things
about
this
conference.
So
I
want
to
thank
you
all
I'm
thrilled,
to
see
you
now.

The
nation's
mayor's
are
here
in
Boston
Massachusetts.
All
we're
here
was
strong
with
together
we
are
rolling
deep
here.
We
hit
us
all,
solve
problems
and
deliver
results
for
Americans,
ensure
that
the
needs
of
our
families
are
met,
that
their
hopes
and
dreams
can
be
fulfilled
and
that
the
cities
of
the
wealthiest
most
powerful
Democratic
nation
in
the
history
of
the
world
can
indeed
be
a
force
for
good
this
year,
we'll
be
focusing
on
three
main
areas:
we'd
like
to
call
the
three
eyes:
infrastructure,
innovation
and
inclusion.

It's
a
bipartisan
strategy
that
bought
the
Brian,
Barnett
and
I
will
be
working
on
together
for
the
next
two
years,
a
two-year
strategy
showing
how
working
together
we
can
certainly
move
this
country
forward,
while
Washington
waits
to
act.
Cities
are
forging
ahead
and
mobilizing
their
resources
and
tackling
the
real
issues
that
face
our
citizens
and
impact
the
well-being
of
our
country
and,
quite
frankly,
we
are
indeed
a
force
to
be
reckoned
with.
Take,
for
instance,
the
findings
from
the
new
Metro
economies
report.
We're
releasing
today
shows
that
the
nation's
Metro
regions
continue
to
dominate.

B
Our
ninety
five
point,
nine
percent
of
all
new
jobs
created
last
year,
and
then
we
now
are
home
to
ninety
one
point:
two
percent
of
the
nation's
gross
domestic
product
and
the
McKinsey
report
shows
that
smart
cities
are
rolling
and
that
the
trillions
of
dollars
that
will
be
invested
in
that
space
of
the
next
several
years
will
dramatically
change
the
world
for
each
and
every
one
of
our
citizens.
Mayors
are
leading
the
way
and
advocating
for
smarter,
stronger
and
more
sensible
gun
policy.

In
April,
we
met
police
chiefs
from
around
the
country
to
talk
about
the
net.
What
the
nation
should
be
doing
to
ensure
the
safety
of
our
residents,
in
particular
our
young
people,
in
our
schools.
To
this
end,
we
will
be
sitting
a
resolution
on
Monday
titled
mayors
and
police
chiefs
together
and
support
a
sensible
gun
policy
that
formally
adopts
the
gun
policies
of
the
major
city
chiefs,
Association.

So
I'm
also
pleased
to
announce
a
new
initiative
that
will
be
taking
at
the
conference
of
mayors
will
be
establishing
the
mayor's
and
business
leaders
center
for
inclusive
and
compassionate
cities.
Several
of
our
cities,
led
indeed,
by
the
cities
of
Anaheim
and
Louisville
and
and
Mesa,
have
been
focusing
intently
on
building
compassionate
cities
and
seeing
what
it
means
to
pull
people
together.

We're
going
to
redouble
those
efforts
working
in
partnership
with
our
business
leaders
to
try
and
take
it
to
another
level
recognizing
that
in
these
tough
times
in
which
we
live,
we're
going
to
have
to
work
much
more
intentionally
in
pulling
people
together
for
decades.
This
conference
has
taken
a
strong
position
in
support
of
civil
rights
and
opposition
of
racism
and
discrimination
of
all
kinds.

Five
in
the
protests
in
August
of
2017
working
with
the
anti-defamation
league,
we
launched
the
mayor's
compact
to
combat
hate
extremism
and
bigotry
to
promote
the
fundamental
principles
of
justice
and
equality,
define
America
and
quickly
more
than
325
mayor's
signed
on
to
the
compact.
The
focus
of
this
Center
is
going
to
be
to
create
a
strong
and
committed
partnership
between
the
mayors
and
business
leaders
and
to
collaborate
on
visions
of
success
or
make
our
cities,
and
ultimately,
our
nation
stronger
or
more
equitable,
more
compassionate
and
more
inclusive.

In
closing,
let
me
say
that,
as
a
gridlock
and
partisanship
in
Washington
continues
to
escalate,
there's
no
better
time
for
the
nation's
mayor's
to
come
together
to
work
together
our
shared
priorities
and
build
a
more
inclusive
future
for
all
Americans
and
the
spirit
of
inclusion
and
bipartisanship.
My
task,
my

the

it's
nice
to
stand
here,
not
just
with
with
colleagues
this
morning,
but
if
you,
if
you
can't
tell
we
actually
like
each
other,
a
lot,
we're
friends
and
it
makes
our
work
a
little
bit
easier.
We
all
share
a
passion
for
our
residents,
a
passion
for
our
communities
and
a
passion
for
America's
future

You
won't
find
much
disagreement
up
here,
but
we
all
believe
that
mayors
have
been
and
are
incredibly
effective
when
it
comes
to
leveraging
our
resources
finding
new
ways
to
invest
in
our
infrastructure
and
preparing
for
the
advances
that
will
come
with
automation
and
the
shifts
that
it
will
create
in
our
workforce,
and
we
must
prepare
for
those
and
aqua
mare.
Benjamin's
sentiment
about
the
rhetoric
heating
up
all
around
us.
I
know
that
mayor's
across
the
country
are,
as
he
mentioned,
redoubling
our
efforts
to
bridge
that
divide.

but
your

this
nation

Walsh,

dear

Boston
strong

an
incredible
City
one
of
the
birthplaces
of
democracy
in
this
country
and
to
be
here
together
across
party
lines,
with
people
solving
real
problems,
not
imaginary
ones.
We
come
together
to
unite,
not
to
divide.
We
come
here
to
add
and
not
to
subtract.

as
the
people
who
are
elected
for
all
of
our
people
in
our
towns
to
get
things
done
and
I'm
so
appreciative
that
well,
we
see
dysfunction
a
little
bit
to
the
south
of
here.
You
can
go
throughout
this
entire
country
and
realize
that
we
are
not
a
country
divided,
maybe
divided
some
days
between
Washington
and
the
rest
of
us,
but
we
have
a
common
language
and
a
common
conversation.
We
have
common
solutions
and
we
are
all
humble
enough
to
learn
from
one
another
I
think
back
home.

Some
people
ask:
why
do
you
go
to
a
US
Conference
of
Mayors?
That
is
some
sort
of
vacation
for
you?
Absolutely
not.
Unless
you
like
hotel
rooms,
meeting
areas,
you
come
together
to
listen
to
hear
and
to
recognize
that
some
other
town
is
doing
it
better
than
you
are
and
giving
you
the
opportunity
to
catch
up
and
to
get
it
done
right.

I've
been
asked
to
speak
for
a
moment
about
immigration
and
I'm
so
glad
to
see
the
three-eyes
initiative,
because
it
is
a
core
of
who
we
are
to
to
be
innovative,
to
look
at
the
infrastructure,
human
and
built
and,
of
course,
inclusion.
This
is
a
country
where
we
know
in
our
cities.
Everyone
belongs.
This
is
a
country
where
everyone
is
welcome,
and
America's
cities
remind
us
of
those
founding
principles
of
who
we
are
so
today
we
are
announcing.

America
is
home,
America
is
home,
is
an
initiative
that
is
funded
with
five
million
dollars
to
be
able
to
come
together
and
to
make
citizens
of
aspiring
Americans
in
Los
Angeles.
We
do
this
in
every
single
one
of
our
public
libraries,
where
we
have
a
citizenship
corner
and
where
every
library
has
a
librarian
who's
trained
to
help.
People
fill
out
paperwork
pass
their
citizenship
tests.
We
know
there
are
a
million
of
legal
residents
here
who
can
become
citizens
tomorrow
and
in
the
midst
of
the
corrosive
debate
about
how
we
will
fix
a
broken
immigration
system.

This
is
work
we
can
do
today
right
now
to
breathe
hope
to
breed
the
future
back
into
this
country
instead
of
the
odious
smell
of
fear
and
the
division
that
I
mentioned
before.
So
we're
going
to
be
working
in
cities
around
this
nation
to
help
that
initiative,
move
forward
and
I
want
to
thank
Tom,
Tait
and
Jorge
Loretha,
who
have
chaired
our
immigration
task
force
because
they've
been
critical
pillars
and
I
know
Tom's
nearing
the
end
of
his
time
as
mayor,
and
it's
going
to
be
a
huge
loss
for
this
conference
Tom.

Weather
you
came
here
and
your
ancestors
and
chains
or
whether
you
came
here
willingly
whether
those
folks
were
here
when
others
settled
this
land.
This
is
a
place
that
all
of
us
indeed
do
belong.
The
last
thing,
I
want
to
say,
is
I
joined
mayor's
from
other
border
states
yesterday,
to
call
on
both
our
department
of
homeland
security
and
as
well,
our
Department
of
Justice
to
stop
the
inhumane
practice
of
separating
children
and
their
parents.

We
have
laws,
we
have
to
obey
laws,
we
need
to
fix
systems,
but
can
we
be
human
beings?
First?
Can
we
be
parents
first,
and
there
are
a
few
places
in
human
history
where
parents
and
children
have
been
unwillingly
separated
and
the
United
States
needs
to
get
out
of
that
business
and
go
back
to
love
first
and
then
fixing
what's
wrong.
Next,
there's
any
Spanish
here
all
right
well
move
into
it
with
that
I'll
toss
it
back
thanks.
So
much.
I
I
Hard
to
control
just
say
that
right
off
the
bat,
but
it
is
a
great
day
here
in
Boston,
so
honored
to
be
here
on
behalf
of
Tom
major,
the
president
interesting
Chiefs,
to
stand
with
America's
mayors,
because
you
know
us
police
chiefs.
We
stand
sat
inside
with
our
mayors
with
mayor
Turner,
who
are
taking
on
issues,
because
these
mayors
have
the
courage
to
focus
on
public
policy.
Have
the
courage
to
understand
that
Public,
Safety
and
gun
violence
isn't
a
Republican
issue:
it's
not
a
democratic
issue.
It's
an
American
issue.
I
It's
a
public
health
epidemic
and
I
want
to
just
tell
them.
There's
10
kilomettre,
because
every
day
we're
talking
about
school
shootings,
but
every
day
on
the
streets
of
the
United
States
children,
young
people,
lives,
are
cut
short
as
a
result
of
gun,
violence
and
clearly
you
know,
I
was
thinking
about
Congress
a
little
while
ago
you
were
talking
mayors,
and
maybe
we
need
a
congress
of
mayors
that
really
our
can-do.
I
I
History
is
going
to
prove
that
those
that
are
standing
with
children
standing
with
families
standing
with
school
districts
that
are
being
torn
apart
on
a
daily
basis
by
gun
violence
as
a
result
of
gun
violence
are
going
to
prove
that
you
had
the
courage
and
I'm
proud
to
stand
with
my
mayor,
Sylvester
Turner,
who,
quite
frankly,
some
that
don't
like
what
we
have
to
say,
dismiss
see
the
it's
all
about
law
and
order.
It's
all
about
supporting
law
enforcement
until
some
folks,
don't
like
what
they're
based
out
of
touch
base
on
both
sides.
I
I
might
add,
don't
like
the
truth
of
the
matter
is
that
these
mayor's
are
smart
when
they
vetted
us
as
police
chiefs.
They
know
that
our
number-one
goal
should
be
to
keep
people
safe
and,
like
I,
always
have
to
say
I've
added
my
mayor
too,
and
we
actually
are
positions
on
these
issues
predate
my
being
your
chief.
I
Our
positions
are
well
established,
they're
well
documented,
and
you
either
stand
with
the
people
that
you
serve
or
you
stand
with
the
people
that
want
to
do
nothing
about
the
death
that
we're
seeing
and
the
destructions
were
seeing
on
a
larger
base
toll
and
every
day.
So
let
this
be
a
beginning,
but
again
mayor's
on
behalf
of
all
the
Chiefs.
This
is
a
great
day,
and
if
it's
the
mayor
saying
that
has
to
be
done,
it's
the
police
chief
saying
to
have
to
be
done.

collective

We
are
the
party
of
mayors
standing
for
Americans,
the
people
we
represent
in
our
cities
and
also

businesses

economically
viable.
So
that's
who
we
are.

can-do
group
of
folks
and
our
president
talked
about
inclusivity
as
part
of
the
three
eyes
I'd
like
to
talk
to
you
about
what
we're
doing
here
at
the
US
Conference
of
Mayors
in
support
of
women
and
their
efforts,
not
only
in
our
country
but
around
the
world
with
the
help
of
the
Wilson
Institute,
that
the
50
by
50
project
is
that
by
the
year
2050
50%
of
elected
officers
held
throughout
the
world
will
be
held
by
women
and
50%
of
c-suites
and
boards
will
be
held
by
women.
Why
is
that.

So
the
US
Conference
of
Mayors
will
have
a
very
strong
agenda
during
this
meeting
are
around
women
and
also
women,
mayors
in
our
organization,
and
how
we
can
continue
to
grow
that
particular
demographics
of
Mayors
in
America
and
then
also
throughout
the
world,
and
we
hope
to
have
your
support
as
we
continue
our
work
in
inclusion
and
an
infrastructure.
I
heard
that
infrastructure
is
not
just
the
built
environment
but
also
the
human
environment,
and
that's
what
it's
all
about
as
well.
So
it
is
about.

Of
the
United
States
Census
is
about
counting
those
who
are
in
our
country.
There
is,
as
you
all
know,
a
question
that
has
been
added
that
should
not
be
on
the
census.
If
you
look
back
at
the
history
of
the
census,
it
is
about
counting
every
individual
that
is
in
your
community,
because
federal
dollars
flow
into
your
communities
based
on
the
population,
not
on
the
citizenship.
So.

No
matter
how
you
came
here
unless
you
are
a
Native
American,
you
are
an
immigrant,
so
America
open
up
your
arms,
the
US
Conference
of
Mayors
and
the
mayor's
who
are
here
are
prepared
to
count
the
individuals
who
live
in
their
cities,
because
we
depend
on
the
resources
that
come
into
our
cities.
Based
on
that
count,
that
count
is
what
we
want
to
do.
That
count
means
everyone
and
we're
prepared.
We
just
need
those
who
are
residing
at
the
south
of
us
to
understand
the.

it
affects
us
every
day,
so
we're
gonna
have
on
an
orange
tie
every
day.

I,

ask
Francis
mayor
Suarez
from
the
city
of
Miami
said:
are
you
Republican
and,

he
said,
are
you
Democrat
and
we
had
a
conversation
just
now,
because
when
we're
trying
to
keep
people
safe
in
miami-dade
County,
we
never
asked
each
other
that
question.
When
we're
talking
on
economic
development,
we
never
asked
each
other
that
question.

Look
the
mayor's
up
here,
the
mayor's
across
this
country,
from
from
Houston
to
Hawaii
from
South
Carolina
to
South,
Dakota
they're,
the
people
who
actually
we
are
the
people
actually
architect,
the
American
Dream
and
it's
always
evolving.
It's
always
being-
is
always
being
drawn.
We're
doing
that
we
don't
do
it
half-heartedly
and
we
don't
do
it
in
a
partisan
way.
We
do
it
because
it
needs
to
be
done
and
so
I'm
happy
to
stand
here
with
this
conference
with
my
colleagues
as
we
continue
to
make
America
great.

Why
the
US
Census
was
created,
we
understand
what
it
is
in,
its
intent
is,
and
what
we
want
to
do
is
relieve
the
fears
of
those
who
are
in
fear,
because
this
question
has
been
added
that
should
not
be
you
know.
I
can't
speak
yet
for
the
entire
US
Conference
of
Mayors,
but
you
know
hashtag
skip
the
question,
but
anyway.

Important
because
there
were
a
number
of
suggestions
and
the
media
that
that
mayor
is
concerned
about
an
undercount
is
because
of
just
financial
issues.
The
reality
is
in
the
undercount
hurts
everyone
her
parents,
their
ever
every
city,
every
county,
every
congressional
district,
regardless
of
the
whether
they're,
blue
or
red
or
purple.
So
we
need
an
accurate
count,
so
we
can
determine
how
our
collective
resources
are
distributed
to
meet
the
needs
of
all
the
people
who
live
within
our
borders.
