Lester Burton, born in Albany, New York in 1918, grew up in Boston at 364 Massachusetts Avenue. Before his time in the Army, Lester was an avid tap dancer who performed at the Raymor-Playmor Ballroom on Huntington Ave. He enlisted in the Army during the second World War, and was killed in action on September 8, 1944. He recieved the Purple Heart award posthumously.

Justice Edward O. Gourdin Veterans Memorial Park, located in the heart of Nubian Square, will now be home to a memorial plaza dedicated to Justice Gourdin and all African-American veterans of Massachusetts. This project is the result of the steadfast, multi-year efforts of the Veterans and Friends of Gourdin Memorial Park community group. Mayor Janey, along with Parks Commissoner Ryan Woods, Veterans Affairs Commissioner Robert Santiago, and members of the Roxbury community join the group in celebration of the groudbreaking for this new memorial.

Hyde Park held a Blue Square dedication for James Higgins, a Navy veteran who served in the Korean War on the USS Saipan, and later worked at the Boston Globe for 40 years. A Blue Square is meant to dedicate someone prominent who has served the local community.
Mr. Higgins was an active and beloved member of Hyde Park, and because of this dedication, he will now be memorialized forever within the city he loved.

General Casey received a Silver Star for his actions on Heartbreak Ridge. He lost his life in a helicopter crash on his third tour in Vietnam. Smith Playground's recent improvements includes the Major General George W. Casey Amphitheater, a multipurpose field, basketball courts, a street hockey court, and a passive plaza space.
