At the Puerto Rican Veterans Memorial in the South End, Mayor Wu joined with Governor Baker, Veterans' Services Commissioner Robert Santiago, and local residents in celebration of Veterans Day. This memorial pays tribute to Puerto Rican men and women who have served this country, and is the only Puerto Rican Veterans memorial in the country.

Lester Burton, born in Albany, New York in 1918, grew up in Boston at 364 Massachusetts Avenue. Before his time in the Army, Lester was an avid tap dancer who performed at the Raymor-Playmor Ballroom on Huntington Ave. He enlisted in the Army during the second World War, and was killed in action on September 8, 1944. He recieved the Purple Heart award posthumously.

Mayor Janey, along with Veterans Services Commissioner Robert Santiago and members of Lester's family, come together at the intersection of Westland Ave and Hemenway Street to dedicate this new Hero Square in Lester's name.

Justice Edward O. Gourdin Veterans Memorial Park, located in the heart of Nubian Square, will now be home to a memorial plaza dedicated to Justice Gourdin and all African-American veterans of Massachusetts. This project is the result of the steadfast, multi-year efforts of the Veterans and Friends of Gourdin Memorial Park community group. Mayor Janey, along with Parks Commissoner Ryan Woods, Veterans Affairs Commissioner Robert Santiago, and members of the Roxbury community join the group in celebration of the groudbreaking for this new memorial.

Hyde Park held a Blue Square dedication for James Higgins, a Navy veteran who served in the Korean War on the USS Saipan, and later worked at the Boston Globe for 40 years. A Blue Square is meant to dedicate someone prominent who has served the local community.

Mr. Higgins was an active and beloved member of Hyde Park, and because of this dedication, he will now be memorialized forever within the city he loved.

General Stanley McChrystal, Congressman Steven Lynch, South Boston native and Vietnam veteran Tom Lyons, and other Boston veterans, for the 39th Anniversary of the South Boston Vietnam Memorial. Gold Star families are honored for the sacrifices that their twenty five loved ones made, by placing a rose at the South Boston Vietnam Memorial Stone.

Mayor Walsh joined with City Councilor Ed Flynn, Chief Marty Martinez, and members of the South Boston community for the dedication of the Martin McDonough Hero Square. McDonough was a South Boston resident who was killed in action while serving aboard the USS Juneau during World War II. For his service and his sacrifice, McDonough was awarded the Purple Heart.

His spirit lives on at the corner of Kane Street and Bellevue Street in Dorchester.

Mayor Walsh and Governor Baker joined the Casey family for the dedication of the Major General George W. Casey Amphitheater and improvements to the Smith Playground in Allston. General Casey received a Silver Star for his actions on Heartbreak Ridge. He lost his life in a helicopter crash on his third tour in Vietnam. Smith Playground's recent improvements includes the Major General George W. Casey Amphitheater, a multipurpose field, basketball courts, a street hockey court, and a passive plaza space.
