From YouTube: African-American Veterans Appreciation Lunch
Description
Mayor Walsh offers remarks at an appreciation lunch for African-American veterans held at the William Carter Post in Mattapan. The event is part of the city's celebration of Black History Month.
A
A
B
B
This
organization
has
been
in
this
particular
area
for
about
27
years,
but
we
know
that
the
54th
is
the
bedrock
of
what
makes
America
and
I'm
so
proud
to
be
a
part
of
the
organization
I've
been
apart
for
about
two
years,
and
what
we
do
is
that
we
tour
the
country
and
we
educate
individuals
about
the
meaning
of
the
Civil
War.
Why
that
war
is
one
of
America's
most
important
wards,
and
why
we
must
keep
that
history
alive.
So
we
make
sure
that
we
go
out.
We
tour
with
high
school.
B
One
other
thing
I
want
to
mention
also,
I
am
also
part
of
another
organization
called
60-plus
veterans
group.
This
group
has
been
around
since
1987.
Alright
1987
they've
been
doing
a
lot
of
great
things
in
the
the
community.
They've
been
meeting
out
of
12
Baptist
Church
of
the
entire
time
in
their
basement,
and
that
group
has
really
been
sustained
on
their
own
funds.
So
right
now,
I
just
want
to
make
sure
that
I
highlight
how
important
60-plus
veterans
group
is
to
the
community
and
how
much.
B
We
would
really
appreciate
that
people
would
start
supporting
that
group.
Like
I,
said,
they've
been
sustaining
themselves
for
well
over
the
time
they've
been
in
existence,
and
so
now
is
the
time
for
that
group
to
really
step
out
and
do
more
for
the
community,
but
also
asked
the
community
to
do
more.
For
that
group.
So
I'm
hoping
I
can
speak
to
anyone
after
I
sit
down.
There
tell
them
a
little
bit
more
about
the
group,
the
website
and
how
you
can
stay
in
contact
with
this
particular
group.
D
Good
morning,
everyone,
it
is
an
honor
to
be
here
with
you
today
and
I
want
to
start
by
thanking
the
post
and
Commander
netter
for
opening
up
your
doors
to
us.
Given
the
history
of
this
post,
we
knew
that
this
would
be
a
great
venue
for
it.
So
we
thank
you
so
much,
and
we
hope
that
this
morning
is
both
educational
and
inspirational
for
everyone.
Here.
D
I'd
also
like
to
give
a
shout
out
two
very
special
Marine
Ken
Perry,
who
is
a
man
who's
serving
our
delicious
food
today,
Semper
Fi
sergeant
and
Mayor
Walsh,
and
every
single
one
of
our
panelists
can
speak
to
the
importance
of
veterans
in
our
community.
We
are
leaders,
we
are
innovators.
We
are
problem
solvers
and
with
the
right
support
from
leadership,
we
can
have
a
tremendous
impact
in
our
communities
as
a
Marine.
I
was
fortunate
enough
to
be
led
by
some
really
amazing
leaders
and
I.
D
E
Thank
you
very
much
commission
to
Sterling
and
I'd
like
to
thank
the
Commissioner,
because
she
has
done
an
incredible
job,
leading
our
office
of
veteran
services
in
so
many
programs,
and
one
in
particular
I'm
going
to
talk
about
in
a
minute
operation.
Think
of
it,
but
she
is
built
an
incredible
team.
She
represents
all
the
veterans
proudly,
as
you
know,
she's
a
proud
marine,
just
like
our
fire,
commissioner,
joe
friends
of
robbery.
So
I
want
to
thank
you
Commissioner
for
everything
you
do
for
all
the
veterans
of
the
City
of
Boston.
E
E
For
all
of
their
great
work
and
I
want
to
thank
everyone
else
was
here
today.
I
know
that
I'm
not
going
to
go
to
all
the
names,
because,
if
I
do
I
will
be
able
to
I'll
be
in
trouble,
but
I
want
to
give
a
couple:
shoutouts
one
is
I
when
I
already
mentioned
it,
but
I
want
to
thank
the
Commissioner
box
of
fire
department
in
marine
himself.
Commissioners
yo
fan.
E
E
E
Today,
we're
here
to
thank
all
the
veterans
in
this
room
and
in
our
great
city.
Thank
you
to
everyone
who
has
worked
hard
to
make
sure
that
we
honor
and
support
our
veterans
in
the
city
of
austin
here
in
Boston,
our
theme
for
Black
History
Month.
This
year's
remembering
our
past,
while
embracing
our
future
and
as
I
look
on
the
tables
and
I
see
the
the
posters
in
the
middle
of
that
table
of
President
Obama.
E
That's
exactly
I
have
to
do
remember
our
past,
but
we
have
to
embrace
our
future
and
the
work
that
has
been
done
in
this
country
over
the
last
several
decades.
We
have
to
continue
to
move
on
all
this
month.
We're
going
to
be
honoring
local
veterans
here
and
leaders
here
who
fought
for
justice
and
those
who
are
still
fighting
today.
E
African
american
veterans
play
a
very
special
role
in
our
city.
Many
of
us
fought
for
this
country.
Even
while
facing
injustice
at
home,
you
helped
to
show
what
it
means
to
be
an
American,
what
it
means
to
serve
what
it
means
to
be
free.
Today
we
will
learn
more
about
how
that
we
honor
that
and
advance
that
legacy.
Our
panel
of
local
leaders
are
going
to
discuss
the
unique
challenges
facing
the
American
African
American
veterans
community
in
the
city
of
Boston.
E
We're
never
going
to
stop
working
to
improve
the
health
and
opportunity
for
the
communities
of
color,
and
particularly
today
for
our
veterans.
When
the
president
announced
the
program
called
my
brother's
keeper.
We
embraced
that
program
and
I
told
him
the
first
day
that
he
launched
the
program
and
the
last
day
as
I
spoke
to
him
a
week
before
he
left.
As
president
I
said,
we're
going
to
make
sure
my
brother's
keep
a
program
in
Boston
is
the
best
in
the
country,
and
we
are
heading
queer
that
way.
Right
now,.
E
E
E
Commissioners,
trailing
also
led
a
project
called
Operation.
Thank
event,
one
of
the
most
important
ways
that
we
reach
out
to
our
veterans.
It's
how
we
show
gratitude
and
how
we
learn
about
their
needs
so
far
was
connected
with
over
a
thousand
veterans
in
this
program.
This
program
is
simply
the
Commissioner
gets
veterans
and
also
volunteers
to
go
around
the
city
of
austin
to
knock
on
the
doors
of
our
veterans,
to
thank
them
for
their
service,
and
we've
heard
more
than
once.
E
Well
with
things
of
veteran,
particularly
vietnam,
veterans
and
they've
said:
I've
never
been
thanked
for
my
service
and
we're
going
to
continue
to
do
that
to
reach
out
to
let
the
veterans
of
our
city
know
the
services
that
are
available
for
them.
One
of
the
days
that
I
walked
went
out
to
the
sect.
22
times
ago,
we
knocked
on
a
door.
I
met
a
guy
named
Lionel
King.
In
addition
to
serving
our
country,
he
was
the
first
black
pitcher
ever
to
be
signed
by
a
major
league
baseball
team.
E
E
But
before
the
woods
we
go
on
to
the
award
service,
I
want
to
express
my
gratitude
to
every
single
veteran
in
this
room.
One
more
time.
Thank
you
for
serving
our
city
and
thank
you
for
serving
our
country
and
there's
12.
Other
people
I
want
to
introduce
one
as
I
mentioned
earlier.
We
don't
do
this
work
alone
in
the
mayor's
office.
We
do
with
the
help
and
with
the
City,
Council
or
partners
in
city.
Councillor
Ayanna
Pressley
is
joined.
Us
all,
I
think
on
suppressing.
E
And
there's
another
young
man
in
this
room
that
I
met
probably
about
seven
16
years
ago,
when
I
was
a
state
representative
and
he
was
working
for
the
mayor
and
the
office
of
neighborhood
services
and
that's
major
Eric
hill
who's.
Here
with
us
today
and
he's
now
working
in
the
Pentagon
Thank
You
major
for
being
with
us
today,
I.
E
Want
to
thank
all
the
veterans
in
this
room
for
reminding
us
about
patriotism,
it's
not
just
about
fighting
a
foreign
enemy.
It's
about
fighting!
What's
right
at
home,
many
of
you
fought
for
justice
during
the
civil
rights
movement
in
Boston,
and
you've
been
fighting
for
that
justice
in
our
communities.
Ever
since
that's
the
mission
is
as
important
today,
as
has
ever
been
I'm
going
to.
Thank
you
all
for
inspiring
us
and
keep
on
watching.
D
D
D
D
D
A
E
Just
want
to
take
that
one
more
minute,
I
want
to
congratulate
all
of
our
special
veterans.
I
want
to
thank
you
for
your
service
to
our
country.
I
want
to
thank
you
for
everything
you
do
for
us
once
again.
I
want
to
thank
everyone
in
this
great
post
again,
but
I
have
a
special
proclamation.
This
weekend,
Boston
was
a
big
week.
There
was
a
young
woman
in
this
city
who
turned
100
years
old.
E
E
Now,
let
me
just
as
we're
celebrating
their
heels
birthday.
I
wanted
to
say
a
couple.
Things
me
really
has
been
a
longtime
resident
of
the
city
of
boston
since
nineteen
twenty
seven,
which
means
that
she's
almost
a
Bostonian
now
merely
has
always
worked
in
empowering
young
people.
She
was
a
leader
of
the
Girl

served
as
a

for

in
her

Now,
when
I
walked
in
today,
Muriel
said
I
missed
her
birthday.
She
told
me
that
I
owe
her
a
dinner.
