mission,
his
plane

His

was
shot
down

of
the
Fontainebleau
forest
south
of
Paris,
as
he
fought
to
control
the
descending

He
ordered
his

to
evacuate.
He
was
the
last

out
of
the

After
walking
all

himself
in
the
village

and
not
a

of
his

They
stayed
hidden
for
seven
weeks
until
Barbizon
was
liberated
in
August
1944,
as
benefits
a
true
hero,
mr.

and

A
To
this
day
he
praises
the
women
and
men
of
the

and
in
particular,

He
marveled
at
their
bravery
in
assisting
mr.

and
his
compatriots.
They
risked
their
lives
and
the
lives
of
their
