Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
5th Session
41st Parliament
A
Remember
nanaimo,
mr
speaker,
last
month
the
new
residents
for
nanaimo's
of
newest,
affordable
housing
on
uplands
drive
began
selecting
their
units.
28
town
homes
are
being
built
right
now,
just
the
final
finishing
touches
being
put
in
place
by
nanaimo
association
for
community
living,
and
these
are
homes
that
are
going
to
change
people's
lives.
They've
got
group
kitchens
built
in
social
lounge
and
the
infrastructure
for
people
to
gather
for
weekly
meals.
The
tenants
selected,
many
of
them
are
essential
service
workers.
A
A
They
said
it's
a
realization
of
a
lifelong
dream,
a
home
of
their
very
own
smiles,
tears
of
happiness
and
joy
and
enthusiasm
were
common
occurrences
for
the
tenants
during
their
unit
selection
meeting,
one
person
said.
I
think
it's
going
to
be
really
good.
I
like
the
fact
that
I
can
be
more
independent,
that
there's
a
social
group
that
I
won't
be
lonely,
there's
going
to
be
people
around
all
the
time,
and
I
like
that.
A
This
is
the
culmination
of
years
of
work
by
nanaimo
association
for
community
living
they're,
doing
this
together
with
the
province
of
bc
with
a
5
million
dollar
investment,
and
they
describe
it
as
a
project
that
began
with
a
dream,
a
request
and
an
openness
to
possibility,
looking
forward
just
in
the
next
few
months
of
the
880,
affordable
housing
units
that
are
going
to
be
starting
construction
or
already
well
underway.
In
nanaimo.
Next,
we've
got
23
units
at
rose
hill
built
with
makola
and
vancouver
island
mental
health
association.
A
Next
74
units
open
on
esteban
built
with
the
united
church
and
next
159,
low-income
seniors
units
in
butter
tubs
marsh
built
together
with
nanaimo,
affordable
housing
all
together,
going
to
have
a
huge
impact
on
our
community
and
everyone
built
with
a
fantastic
community
organization.
That's
leading
the
way
and
changing
lives
in
partnership.
