Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
5th Session
41st Parliament
A
Member
maple
ridge
mission-
well,
thank
you
very
much
honorable
speaker
for
individuals.
Active
transportation
like
cycling
can
really
improve
physical
and
mental
health
and
cut
down
on
transportation
costs
and,
of
course,
for
society.
Active
transportation
can
reduce
congestion
and
be
a
key
tool
in
our
fight
against
climate
change.
I'm
very
proud
that
in
british
columbia
we
have
the
highest
percentage
of
active
transportation
trips
for
commuting
to
and
from
work
out
of
all
the
provinces.
We've
done
some
great
work
to
make
sure
that
discussions
about
transportation
infrastructure
include
cycling.
A
However,
we
can
only
enjoy
active
transportation
as
long
as
it's
safe
and
that's
what
I
wanted
to
address
today.
Honorable
speaker,
this
month
in
my
community,
there
were
two
tragic
reminders
of
the
vital
need
for
improved
cycling
safety
and
active
transportation
infrastructure.
Last
week,
sadly,
gareth
riordan
was
struck
by
a
truck
on
a
popular
bike.
Trail
in
pitt
meadows,
gareth
is
is
survived
by
his
wife,
natalia
and
their
three
children.
A
A
gofundme
fund
has
been
set
up
in
their
support
and
forty
thousand
dollars
of
the
seventy
five
thousand
dollar
dollar
goal
has
already
been
reached,
and
in
early
july
daphne
tom
banakas
was
struck
by
a
vehicle
on
low
heat
highway.
Daphne
was
beginning
a
cross-country
cycling.
Tour
of
canada
and
she'd
been
spending
some
time
in
colombia
and
really
wanted
to
work
with
immigrants
and
refugees.
A
A
That's
why
we
must
redouble
our
efforts
on
old
speaker
to
make
roads
safer
for
cyclists
and
other
participants
in
active
transportation.
We
must
build
on
the
work.
That's
already
been
done
to
achieve
the
goals
set
out
in
the
move.
Commute
connect
strategy
must
continue
to
make
changes
like
the
recent
quadrupling
of
fines
for
dooring
and
the
like
the
introduction
of
more
education
and
awareness
awareness
for
drivers.
