Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
1st Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
sorry
guilford,
thank
you
honorable
speaker.
It
had
its
start
in
the
mid-1800s
with
the
coal
mines
here
on
vancouver
island
and
the
famous
gold
camps
of
the
cariboo,
and
today
british
columbia
has
grown
to
become
one
of
the
world's
major
mining
regions.
Indeed
we're
now
one
of
the
world's
most
prolific
mining
regions,
and
we
still
have
vast
untapped
mineral
reserves.
British
columbia,
in
fact,
is
canada's
largest
exporter
of
coal
leading
producer
of
copper
and
only
producer
of
molybdenum.
A
The
bc
mining
industry
is
a
pillar
of
our
economy
and
is
playing
a
key
role
in
our
province's
ongoing
economic
recovery
in
2019
bc.
Mining
operations
generated
11.4
billion
dollars
in
gross
revenues,
employed
11
784
workers
and
made
over
one
billion
dollars
in
payments
to
governments
and
accounts
for
approximately
one
quarter
of
all
of
bc's
exports.
A
This
includes
265
million
dollars
in
goods
and
services
from
120
indigenous
affiliated
suppliers.
Today
is
mining
day
in
british
columbia,
and
I
know
all
members
of
all
sides
of
the
house
will
join
me
in
celebrating
the
women
and
men
in
this
important
and
growing
industry
for
their
valuable
contributions
to
british
columbia,
canada
and
the
world.
Thank
you,
honorable
speaker,.
