Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
2nd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
west
vancouver-
capilano-
thank
you,
mr
speaker,
children
and
youth
in
and
from
government
care
experience,
unique
barriers
and
challenges
in
their
daily
lives,
they're,
often
stigmatized
and
struggle
with
self-esteem,
belonging
and
connection
to
community.
A
It's
the
responsibility
of
all
of
us
to
make
sure
that
children
and
youth
in
care
have
the
same
right
to
safety
and
support
for
development
and
social
well-being
may
31st
to
june.
The
6th
is
child
and
youth
and
care
week
in
british
columbia,
a
group
of
youth
in
and
from
care
advocated
for
this
week,
so
their
siblings
could
grow
up,
feeling
celebrated
for
their
diverse
talents
and
accomplishments,
surrounded
by
a
supportive
community
who
stands
with
them.
A
There
are
many
reasons
that
a
young
person
may
go
into
care
when
they
or
their
family
are
in
crisis,
from
babies
to
teens.
Children
can
be
removed
for
any
number
of
reasons.
Their
parents
are
unable
to
care
for
them
or
don't
have
the
skills
or
the
tools
they
need
to
care
for
them.
Sometimes
it's
just
for
a
short
while
and
sometimes
it
can
be
their
whole
childhood.
A
Now
I
can't
talk
about
children
and
youth
this
week
without
recognizing
the
impact
of
the
residential
school
system
on
families.
Indigenous
youth
are
over
represented
in
the
number
of
youth
in
care.
No
parent
wants
to
be
a
bad
parent.
They
want
to
be
a
great
parent,
but
we
learn
parenting
and
connection
from
experiencing
it.
There
are
generations
of
indigenous
peoples
whose
families
were
torn
apart,
children
taken
away
and
losing
connection
to
family
and
community.
