Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
2nd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Study
white
rock.
Thank
you,
mr
speaker.
I
rise
today
in
recognition
of
the
beginning
of
international
pride
month
as
we
celebrate
bc's
lgbtq2
plus
community.
It
has
been
a
long
fight
for
equal
rights
for
members
of
the
lgbtq2
plus
community
in
this
province
and
country.
It
was
only
in
1999
that
the
supreme
court
of
canada
ruled
it
unconstitutional
to
deny
same-sex
couples
equality.
A
Today,
members
of
the
lgbtq2
plus
community
still
face
social
discrimination,
hatred,
homophobia,
transphobia
and
biphobia.
Sadly,
there
are
too
many
instances
of
hate
towards
this
community
in
bc.
Having
untold
impacts,
often
on
their
mental
health,
means
that
we
must
all
fight
and
discrimination
and
intolerance
in
our
communities.
A
It
is
my
firm
and
unwavering
belief
that,
regardless
of
how
someone
identifies,
they
should
be
free
and
equal
rights
in
our
society.
Further
strides
for
inclusion
must
be
made,
and
as
a
community,
we
must
all
work
together
to
make
sure
that
happens,
whether
someone
is
queer
transgender,
non-conforming
to
spirit
intersex
asexual.
A
None
of
this
should
impact
their
ability
to
be
welcomed
in
bc,
find
employment
access
education
and
have
the
right
to
a
high
quality
life
free
of
discrimination
bc
at
its
best
is
when
we
achieve
inclusive
inclusiveness,
a
province
where
everyone
is
free
to
be
their
most
authentic
selves.
Thank
you,
mr
speaker.
