Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
2nd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
langley
east
honorable
speaker,
thank
you
for
recognizing
me
to
rise
and
speak
in
the
house
today
about
a
subject
which
we
should
all
care
deeply
about.
Today
is
world
b
day
each
year
on
may
20th,
we
celebrate
the
most
important
contributions
that
bees
make
to
all
things
in
our
world.
Bees
play
a
major
role
in
agriculture
as
pollinators
of
crops,
contributing
to
an
estimated
550
million
dollars
to
the
economy
in
british
columbia
and
over
2
billion
across
canada.
A
Honorable
speaker,
nearly
a
quarter
of
the
bee
colony
farms
in
metro,
vancouver
and
the
fraser
valley
are
located
in
langley.
One
such
example
in
my
riding
is
mckinnis
farm,
a
family-owned
farm
business
that
uses
permaculture
practices
using
natural
topography,
ponds
streams
and
forests
producing
a
brand
called
bee
ingredients,
honey
from
one
of
the
50
plus
colonies
of
honeybees
on
their
farms.
In
partnership
with
the
honest
company,
this
pollinator
conservation
area
also
helps
educate
the
public
about
the
importance
of
all
pollinators.
A
Honorable
speaker,
bees,
other
pollinators,
such
as
butterflies,
bats
and
hummingbirds,
are
increasingly
under
threat.
Approximately
90
percent
of
the
world's
wild
flowering
plant
species
depend
entirely,
or
at
least
in
part,
on
animal
pollination,
as
well
as
over
75
percent
of
the
world's
food
crops.
It
takes
one
colony
of
honey
bees
around
30
000
bees
to
pollinate
an
acre
of
fruit
trees.
Our
government
recognizes
the
important
role
that
bees
play
in
our
province.
The
bbc
program
enhances
bee
health
through
the
province
of
british
columbia.
