Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
2nd Session
42nd Parliament
A
A
Many
of
us
know
the
origins
of
orange
shirt
day.
Members
of
this
house
even
reflected
on
the
history.
A
few
weeks
ago,
in
1973
when
phyllis
webstad
was
six
years
old.
She
lived
with
her
grandmother
at
the
dog
creek
reserve,
south
of
williams
lake.
Her
grandmother
saved
enough
money
to
take
phyllis
to
robinson's
store
where
she
picked
out
a
bright,
shiny,
orange
shirt
for
her
first
day
of
school.
A
At
the
mission
excited
to
attend
school,
she
was
shocked
to
be
stripped
of
her
clothes
and
her
belongings,
the
first
day,
including
the
orange
shirt
that
she
was
so
proud
to
wear
from
then
on.
The
color
of
orange
reminded
her
of
that
moment
and
the
legacy
of
residential
schools.
The
courage
that
phyllis
has
shown
in
generously
sharing
her
story
and
creating
space
for
others
to
tell
theirs
is
one
of
the
most
unselfish
acts.
A
I've
ever
witnessed,
I'm
proud
to
know
her
and
along
with
the
right
or
the
residents
of
caribou
chilcotin,
and
indeed
the
members
of
the
bc
legislative
assembly
are
extremely
grateful
and
thankful
for
her
commitment
to
advancing
reconciliation.
Phyllis.
You
are
a
true
leader
and
we
are
so
thankful
for
your
contributions.
