Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
2nd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
richmond
queensborough.
Thank
you,
mr
speaker.
Mr
speaker,
I
was
born
in
a
medieval
town
called
sustanpur
ludi,
it's
a
small
town
now,
but
has
an
incredible
history.
In
the
14th
and
1500s
it
was
a
booming
metropolis
and
an
important
trading
post
in
northern
punjab,
northern
india,
its
streets
and
lanes
are
vibrant,
with
stories
of
guru,
nanak
the
founder
of
the
six
spiritual
movement
and
faith
and
the
first
ten
gurus
teachers.
I
spent
many
summers
there
as
a
child
and
as
you
as
you,
traverse
the
streets
or
turn
a
corner.
A
There
are
innumerable
gurdwaras
and
reminders
of
guru.
Nanak
guru,
nanak
was
blessed
with
an
inside
intellect
and
depth
of
understanding
that
only
a
few
have
in
a
time
of
religious
orthodoxy,
caste
class
and
gender
violence
and
persecution.
His
ideas
represented
a
revolutionary
antagonism
to
the
cultural
norm.
He
was
a
fierce
advocate
of
the
ideas
of
equality
and
justice
and
his
poems
teachings
and
writings
reflect
that.
A
You
heard
some
of
that
this
morning.
Those
enlightened
words
speak
repeatedly
of
the
universality
of
humankind
of
human
and
women's
rights
and
the
tie
of
love
that
binds
us
all
together.
Ekko
pavan
mathi
sabh,
there
is
only
one
breath
all
are
made
of
the
same
clay.
The
light
within
all
is
the
same.
He
imbued
sikhi
with
a
strong
sense
of
justice
and
equality.
Its
most
potent
and
visible
representation
is
in
the
concept
of
longer
where
all
regardless
of
their
present
place
in
society,
come
together
to
prepare,
serve
and
eat.
A
We
saw
the
spirit,
just
in
the
last
few
days,
with
gurdwaras
and
organizations
preparing
thousands
of
meals
for
those
of
our
british
columbians
stranded
and
left
without
homes.
A
He
was
a
prolific
traveler
and
between
his
late
20s
and
mid
50s
spent
24
years
traveling
learning
and
spreading
his
teachings
of
love
and
courage,
mostly
by
foot
he
traveled
south
through
most
of
the
indian
subcontinent.
All
the
way
to
sri
lanka
and
north
through
kashmir
in
tibet,
then
east
all
the
way
to
the
holy
islamic
city
of
mecca,
there's
a
fantastic
exhibition
curated
by
the
international
organization,
united
states
and
guru,
nanak's
life
being
held
at
gurdwara
at
the
grizzwaro
number
five
road
in
richmond
that
runs
until
this
sunday.
