Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
3rd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Thank
you.
Mr
speaker
april
was
a
cancer
awareness
month
who
was
proclaimed
by
our
province
as
canadian
cancer
daffodil
society's
daffodil
month.
As
we
came
past
the
close
of
that
month,
I
wanted
to
again
recognize
the
impact
that
cancer
has
had
on
canadians
and,
as
you
can
imagine,
all
things
cancer
have
been
in
the
forefront
of
my
mind
these
days.
Cancer
remains
the
leading
cause
of
death
in
canada.
An
estimated
two
in
five
canadians
will
be
diagnosed
with
cancer
in
their
lifetime
and
about
one
in
four
will
die
from
cancer.
A
My
mother
was
one
of
those
that
passed
away
from
cancer
a
few
years
ago.
She
battled
breast
cancer
for
over
two
decades.
My
father
is
also
a
cancer
survivor.
Many
in
this
house
have
either
come
face
to
face
with
that
diagnosis
or
also
have
loved
ones
that
have
been
impacted.
My
friends
here
that
have
briefly
faced
cancer
will
testify
to
the
surreal
feeling
one
gets
when
they
are
first
told
they
have
cancer.
The
anxiety
it
creates
for
oneself
and
for
one's
loved
ones
is
a
phenomena
in
itself.
A
Melanoma
cancer
continues
to
increase,
despite
being
a
highly
preventable
cancer,
while
thyroid
cancer
is
decreasing.
It's
expected
that
the
three
leading
causes
of
cancer
death
will
be
lung
cancer
at
25,
colorectal
cancer
at
11
and
pancreatic
cancer.
At
seven
percent,
these
rates
have,
thankfully,
been
declining
over
the
last
few
decades.
Current
five-year
net
cancer
survivor
estimate
is
estimated
to
be
64
for
all
cancers
combined.
It
wasn't
always
so.
A
Those
statistics
are
a
lot
better
than
they
have
been
in
the
past
and
that's
a
testament
to
the
significance
of
continued
research
in
the
detection
and
early
treatment
and
how
awareness
programs,
like
the
canadian
cancer
society's
daffodil
month
have
helped
improve
those
statistics.
I
encourage
all
that
have
faced
cancer
either
as
a
patient
or
as
a
loved
one,
to
continue
to
continue
to
share
their
stories
and
to
spread
hope.
