Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
3rd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Thank
you,
mr
speaker.
Today,
I'd
like
to
talk
about
a
very
important
organization
in
chilliwack
the
ann
davies,
transition
society,
their
mission
statement
is
and
davis
transition
society
provides
education,
prevention
and
support
services
to
those
affected
by
abuse
or
violence,
and
their
vision
is
communities
free
from
violence
and
abuse.
A
The
genesis
of
the
society
was
in
1979
when
concerned.
Community
members
formed
the
emergency
shelter
committee.
They
met
in
private
homes
and
began
to
look
at
practical
ways
that
they
could
help.
Members
took
responsibility
to
help
women
obtain
medical
treatment,
deal
with
the
police,
contact,
the
ministry
of
human
resources
and
locate
housing
in
1981.
The
emergency
shelter
committee
became
incorporated
as
the
upper
fraser
valley
transition
society.
A
It's
now
time
to
find
a
name
for
the
house
that
will
provide
shelter
for
so
many
women
and
children.
Gene
scott,
a
member
of
the
ufvt,
did
some
research
and
discovered
that
a
local
woman
named
ann
davis
had
helped
provide
shelter
for
women
who
were
victims
of
domestic
abuse
and
their
children.
Since
her
arrival
in
chilliwack
in
the
1920s
in
1981,
the
ann
davis
transition
society
was
named
in
her
honor
today.
A
The
society
is
headed
up
by
its
executive
director,
patty
mackahanic,
who
some
people
in
the
chamber
know,
and
not
only
does
the
society
give
emergency
shelter
to
women
and
children
who
are
victims
of
domestic
abuse,
but
it
also
offers
a
plethora
of
counseling
and
programs
for
the
community.
Currently,
this
society
is
hosting
coldest
night
of
the
year.
A
family-friendly
walk
to
raise
money
for
local
charities
serving
people
experiencing,
hurt
hunger
and
homelessness.
A
My
friend,
the
member
from
chilliwack
kent
and
myself
have
a
team
this
year
and
we're
looking
forward
to
the
walk
this
saturday
and
you
can
go
online
and
donate
to
our
team.
Thank
you
very
much,
mr
speaker,
and
I
I
hope
the
house
would
would
join
me
in
in
celebrating
the
ann
davis
transition
society.
