Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
3rd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
vancouver
falls.
Creek.
Thank
you,
mr
speaker.
I'm
honored
to
acknowledge
that
june
is
deaf-blind
awareness
month,
it's
also
the
birth
month
of
one
of
history's,
most
famous
deaf-blind
persons,
helen
keller,
the
canadian
national
institute
for
the
blind
estimates
that
there
are
over
a
thousand
people
living
in
british
columbia
who
have
both
significant
hearing
and
vision
loss
by
proclaiming
june
as
deaf-blind
awareness
month.
We
have
an
opportunity
to
recognize
those
individuals
and
to
celebrate
the
many
contributions
that
people
with
deafblindness
make
to
communities
throughout
our
province.
A
People
who
are
deafblind
can
live
full
meaningful
lives
as
independently
as
possible,
with
the
right
supports
in
place
like
intervenor
services,
who
act
as
communication
bridges.
Deafblindness
is
a
unique
information
gathering
disability
that
includes
the
dual
sensory
loss
of
both
sight
and
hearing.
Intervenor
services
assist
people
who
are
deafblind,
so
they
can
more
fully
access
their
communities
and
make
independent
choices
that
are
right
for
them.
A
Intervenors
make
it
easier
for
people
who
are
deafblind
to
navigate
the
many
day-to-day
activities
and
I'm
sure
many
of
us
take
for
granted
grocery
shopping,
banking,
filling
out
forms
or
even
attending
a
wedding.
These
critical
services
ensure
that
people
with
deafblindness
can
face
the
day,
confident
that
their
thoughts
and
ideas
will
be
heard
and
understood.
A
Raising
awareness
about
deaf-blindness
is
an
important
part
of
shifting
attitudes
and
removing
barriers
so
that
we
can
build
a
more
accessible
and
inclusive
province
for
everyone.
I'd
like
to
invite
all
members
to
join
me
and
everyone
in
british
columbia
in
recognizing
june,
as
deafblindness
awareness
month
as
government,
continues
to
work
with
people
with
disabilities
to
identify,
remove
and
prevent
barriers
to
accessibility
and
inclusion.
