Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
3rd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
parksville
qualcomm.
Thank
you.
Honorable
speaker,
25
years
ago,
nine
nations
on
central
vancouver
island
came
together
with
a
common
purpose
to
better
the
lives
of
children
and
care
and
driven
by
their
deep
respect
for
this
nina
wyatt,
their
sacred
ways
of
knowing
and
being
they
formed.
Kwamut
leilam,
the
malahat
lake
kawachin
lyaksan
halalt
panellicut
sunimus,
sinemo,
snownawas
and
qualicum
first
nations
determined
to
fulfill
their
inherent
rights
to
care
for
and
to
protect
their
children.
A
At
a
recent
kl
event.
At
a
kl
board,
president
robina
thomas
shared
her
deep
connections
to
these
lands
and
people
and
the
importance
of
kwamut
leilam
for
her
community
saying
that
their
children
deserve
to
know
who
they
are
and
where
they
came
from
and
the
pride
that
children
felt
when
they
were
able
to
connect
through
traditional
protocols
and
tribal
journeys.
A
She
reminds
us
how
sometimes
the
work
is
really
hard,
but
it's
about
the
generations
that
come
behind
us
growing
from
just
10
employees
to
the
now
107
kwamut
leilam
offers
a
full
spectrum
of
culturally
appropriate
child
and
family
services,
striving
to
ensure
that
children
in
their
communities
are
safe
and
protected,
and
those
outside
of
their
communities
are
returned
home.
Building
on
this
success,
kwame
leyland
foundation
was
formed.
A
I
want
to
add
this
is
the
first
indigenous
lead
community
foundation
in
of
its
kind
in
western
canada,
it
was
formed
to
open
the
doors
to
partnerships
and
collaborations
and
a
shared
responsibility
to
move
forward.
It
will
support
a
wide
range
of
youth
development
programs.
It
is
future
focused
and
it
builds
both
social
and
economic
prosperity
for
generations
to
come.
A
I
also
want
to
recognize
the
mastercard
foundation,
who
recently
contributed
three
million
dollars
to
the
kwame
leyland
foundation
and
aspire,
who
has
committed
to
provide
scholarships
and
bursaries
for
young
people
from
the
nine
nations
who
will
be
entering
college
and
university
in
the
next
two
years
with
the
house.
Please
join
with
me
in
celebrating
the
accomplishments
and
the
successes
of
the
kwame
leyland
board,
the
executive
director
bill
yoakum
and
their
amazing
staff.
