Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
3rd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
Richmond
Queensborough,
thank
you
Mr
Speaker.
Last
week,
October
27th
legal
aid
organizations
across
Canada,
partnered
with
schools
and
other
educational
institutions
to
build
awareness
about
the
justice
system.
It
was
recognized
that
day
was
recognized
as
Duty
Council
day.
Legal
aid,
lawyers
and
Duty
Council
Mr
Speaker
form
an
integral
part
of
our
justice
system.
A
Legal
aid
lawyers
and
Duty
Council
provide
Legal
Services
at
no
cost
to
their
clients
and
advised
disadvantaged
adults
and
youth
across
Canada
on
an
average
of
1.2
million
times
a
year,
their
compassionate
and
capable,
and
make
a
career
of
helping
people
in
need,
whether
it
be
family
law,
immigration
or
a
criminal
matter.
They
form
an
integral
part
of
our
system,
especially
for
the
most
disadvantaged
British
Columbians,
when
an
individual
or
a
family
has
to
deal
with
a
matter
that
requires
legal
help.
A
That
journey
is
often
life-altering
having
the
Helping
Hand
of
someone
that
can
navigate
the
system
with.
You
is
crucial
not
just
to
that
individual,
but
to
our
society
as
a
whole.
If
we
are
to
continue
to
live
in
a
free
and
respectful
Society
every
year,
thousands
of
people
are
unable
to
pay
for
a
lawyer
when
they
need
it
most.
That's
where,
for
many
of
these
families,
legal
aid,
lawyers
and
Duty
councils
step
in
they
play
that
central
part
not
only
for
their
client,
but
for
for
the
overall
fairness
of
our
justice
system.
A
Our
system
relies
heavily
on
these
exemplary
individuals
for
the
longest
time
Mr
Speaker.
We
in
British
Columbia
ignored
these
individuals,
who
are
a
vital
part
of
our
justice
system
and
that
had
a
deadening
effect.
The
number
of
lawyers
that
were
working
for
legal
aid
decreased
and
the
most
disadvantaged
British
Columbians
had
difficulty
accessing
just
just
the
justice
system,
something
that
should
be
honored
and
prized
in
a
country
that
holds
freedom
and
the
rule
of
law.
A
Dear
that's,
why
I'm
really
proud
to
say
I
stand
with
his
government
who
listened
to
Legal
Aid
lawyers
and
the
amazing
people
at
all
the
Association
of
Legal
Aid
lawyers
and
reverse
Corps,
since
2017
provincial
funding
for
Legal
Services
has
increased
by
34.2
million,
there's
much
much
more
to
do
to
catch
up,
but
we
are
committed
to
improving
access
to
Legal
Services
for
all
British
Columbians.
Thank
you.
Mr
Speaker.
