Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
3rd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
first
result,
thank
you
Mr
speaker
tomorrow.
November
25th
is
the
International
Day
for
the
elimination
of
violence
against
women,
officially
designated
by
the
adoption
of
a
United
Nations
resolution
in
February
of
2000.,
and
tomorrow
also
marks
the
beginning
of
16
days
of
action
against
gender-based
violence.
A
Women's
rights
activists
have
observed
November
25th
as
a
day
of
gen
against
gender-based
violence,
since
1981.
date
was
selected
to
honor
the
Mirabelle
sisters.
Three
political
activists
from
the
Dominican
Republic,
who
were
brutally
murdered
in
1960
by
the
country's
violent
dictator,
despite
Decades
of
activism,
violence
against
women
and
girls
remains
a
pervasive
problem
worldwide.
A
To
date,
only
two
of
three
countries
have
outlawed
outlawed
domestic
violence,
while
37
countries
worldwide
still
exempt
rape
perpetrators
from
prosecution.
If
they
are
married
to
or
will
eventually
marry,
the
victim
and
49
countries
currently
have
no
laws
protecting
women
from
domestic
violence.
In
Canada
we
have
laws
against
domestic
violence.
Our
Charter
of
Rights
and
Freedoms
codifies
the
rights
of
women
under
Canadian
laws
and
statutes.
Yet,
even
with
all
our
legal
protections,
violence
against
women
continues
to
be
a
serious
problem
in
Canada,
while
significant
efforts
have
been
made
in
recent
decades.
A
Much
work
remains
to
be
done
to
prevent
and
respond
to
the
violence
that
persists
in
both
public
and
private
spheres
of
women's
lives.
According
to
National
statistics,
women
are
more
likely
than
men
to
be
the
victims
of
specific
forms
of
violence,
such
as
intimate
partner,
violence,
severe
forms
of
spousal
violence,
sexual
violence
and
stalking.
A
So
today,
as
we
Mark,
the
International
Day
for
the
elimination
of
violence
against
women,
I
hope
each
member
of
this
chamber
will
join
me
in
not
only
raising
awareness,
but
also
to
act.
Let
us
Empower
women
and
girls
and
continue
to
do
the
important
work
in
this
house
required
to
support
them
and
to
protect
them.
Thank
you.
