Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
3rd Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
richmond
steveston.
Thank
you,
mr
speaker.
The
historic
community
of
steveston
was
founded
in
the
1880s
and
japanese
canadians
have
been
part
of
the
fabric
of
steeston.
Since
its
founding
the
bustling
fishing
encountering
cannery
industries
brought
people
of
diverse
heritage
together
and
our
community
thrived.
Before
world
war
ii,
there
were
over
2
000
people
of
japanese
descent
living
in
richmond
out
of
a
population
of
10
000
people.
They
were
important
contributors
to
the
betterment
of
richmond
building
a
hospital
and
a
school
that
could
be
used
by
both
japanese
and
non-japanese
residents.
A
When
world
war
ii
broke
out,
the
canadian
government,
disgracefully
forced
japanese
canadians
to
internment
camps
and
dispossessed
them
of
their
belongings
and
assets.
The
city
has
created
a
nike
garden
memorial
in
the
heart
of
the
village,
and
I
encourage
everyone
to
visit,
learn
and
reflect
upon
that
period
of
history
to
work
on
healing
the
richmond's
nikkei
community.
A
The
doors
opened
on
the
new
steveston
martial
arts
center,
the
first
dojo
outside
of
japan,
to
be
built
using
traditional,
japanese
architectural
style.
Mr
speaker,
I
would
like
to
note
that
the
steveston
martial
arts
center
is
having
its
50th
anniversary
this
year,
which
is
a
considerable
accomplishment.
A
The
center
is
an
important
hub
for
steveston,
together
with
the
japanese
language,
school
and
japanese
gardens.
They
make
up
the
japanese
canadian
cultural
center
I'd
like
to
recognize
original
judo
club
members,
martin
kurimoto
art,
nishi,
haparata
and
isaiah
kuromoto
for
being
part
of
the
foundation
and
of
an
important
community
institution,
and
I'd
also
like
to
extend
thanks
to
al
sakai,
judo
club
president
toshi
uchiyagi
karate
club
president
ray
morau
kendall
club
head
instructor
for
their
work,
ensuring
the
clubs
are
vibrant
now
and
in
years
to
come.
Thank
you.
