Member from vancouver langara tomorrow is moose hyde campaign day an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the intergenerational trauma experienced by indigenous families and communities, and show our solidarity and commitment to help families and communities to heal and to end violence against women and children.

A

Indigenous women and children experience a disproportionate level of violence and racism. Last month, the report by statistics, canada, found that 65 percent of indigenous women in bc have experienced some form of violence.

A

This is 15 higher than that of non-indigenous women. The vision for the campaign came to indigenous co-founders, paul and raven lassert, while on a hunting trip in their traditional carrier territory, they harvested a moose and had the idea to tan its hide and cut it into squares to inspire change.

This was the start of the moosehide campaign, a national grassroots movement for indigenous and non-indigenous people, particularly men and boys, to join together and take a stand against violence.

The moose hide pin is a unifying symbol for all of us to raise our consciousness and fill around ourselves with the experiences of indigenous peoples and communities.

It is a symbol of hope and serves as a visual commitment to honoring and respecting the women and children in our lives. More than three million music pins have been distributed since 2011.

We will be gathering at noon tomorrow for the walk to end violence, which will end here on the legislature grounds.

I hope everyone in this house will join me tomorrow in reaffirming our commitment to ending gender-based violence in bc. We raise our hands to the moose high campaign for the vital work that they are doing to end violence against indigenous women and children.
