Description
The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia
4th Session
42nd Parliament
A
Member
for
Prince
George,
McKenzie,
Mr,
Speaker,
Murray
and
Cheryl
Richards
raised
cattle
Northwest
of
Prince
George.
This
winter
Murray
feeds
close
to
200
pregnant
towels,
165
calves
from
last
year,
30
replacement,
heifers
and
eight
registered
Bulls.
He
uses
some
of
the
1800
round,
bales
of
eight
and
300
bales
of
Silence
that
he
and
Cheryl
spent
18-hour
days.
Bailing
Last
Summer
Murray's
animal
husbandry
skills
developed
over
a
lifetime
of
raising
beef
are
put
to
the
test
every
day.
A
40
new
calves
have
already
been
born
and
they're
expecting
another
145.,
no
small
feat
in
February
with
blizzards
and
cold
weather.
We're
experiencing
this
Monday
over
30
centimeters
of
snow
fell
in
a
few
short
hours
temporarily
diverting
his
time,
helping
Cheryl
get
the
truck
out
of
the
yard
and
out
to
the
highway,
pulling
neighbors
out
and
plowing
driveways.
By
the
end
of
last
week,
temperatures
had
plummeted
to
minus
40
with
the
wind
chill
factored
in,
but
cows
don't
wait.
A
Murray
makes
routine
checks
every
two
hours
round,
lacrosse
managing
only
14
hours
of
sleep
in
the
last
five
days.
Besides
checking
on
new
calves,
you
must
keep
water
crops
open
from
freezing
up,
provide
extra
bedding
for
calves
and
even
brings
the
odd
one
into
the
house
to
warm
up
with
blankets
and
the
heater
and
a
tablespoon
of
raw
honey
he's
had
to
extract
four
cows
so
far,
this
season,
again
not
unexpected,
as
over
the
years
he's
learned
to
expect
about
five
percent
of
birthing
cows
need
assistance
to
deliver
their
calves.
A
Some
calves
need
help
to
start
nursing
and
he
and
Cheryl
provide
bottle
feeding
for
stomach
tube
feeding
to
those
cows
three
to
four
times
a
day.
Mr
Speaker,
Murray
and
Cheryl
wouldn't
have
it
any
other
way.
They
understand
the
critical
role
Farmers
play
in
maintaining
enhancing
food
Security
in
our
profits.
There
are
hundreds
of
families
across
the
province
who
are
doing
the
same
thing,
and
we
most
appreciate
it
for
all
that
they
do
for
us,
Thanking
us
for
speaking.
