The Council on Aging of Buncombe County recently celebrated their first annual Senior Breakfast of Champions in honor of some outstanding seniors in our area. After an extensive nomination process, eight were chosen for the 2016 celebration. Chosen were: Bob Tomasulo, Chris Moutos, Eugene "Bob" Carr, Jeanne Bowman, Judith Cheney, Maggie "Queen Mother" Belle Gladden, Oscar Wong, and Captain Walton Boyer.

celebration
of
champions,
a
breakfast
of
champions.
If
you
will,
they
have
been
nominated
by
you,
the
schools
have
been
involved.
This
has
really
been
a
multi-generational
thing.
This
is
really
all
of
us
working
together,
so
I
think
it's
nice
that
people
as
young,
as
my
seven-year-old,
who
thinks
that
daddy
is
ancient,
can
realize
that
there
are
no
limitations.
There
are
no
limitations
on
age,
and
that
is
certainly
underscored
by
all
of
the
achievements
we
are
going
to
hear
about
today.

love
about
the
senior
champions
and-

this

five
that
we're
giving
you
this
morning
with
this
wonderful
celebration-
is
that
you
guys
are
the
front
line
in
the
work
of
culturally
reframing
what
it
means
to
be
old
right,

you
are
shining
examples
of
what
it
means
to
not
just
get
older
but
grow
older.

a
little
bit
about
Miss
Jean.
She
is
a
retired
elementary
school
librarian,
my
goodness,

of
service
are
invaluable.
She
uses
his
loving
arms
to
rock
babies
at

Development
Center.
She
is
a
gardener
and

hope.

she
donates

to

agencies

her

thumbs

volunteers
nearly
every

day

the

Carr,

was

into
the
Army
under
the
GI
Bill,

Yale
man

this
young
man
for
more
than
three
decades
mr.
tomasulo
worked
in
the
Social
Security
Administration
and
lived
to
tell
about
it.
He
has
used
his
experience
to
advocate
for
Western
North
Carolina
seniors
another
champion
with
great
volunteering
service,
including
work
with
the
Council
on
Aging,
the
aging
coordinating
consortium
and
the
LGBT
older
advocates
committee
among
others.

provides
invaluable
guidance
to
seniors
and
also
agencies
on
how
to
best
provide
help
to
seniors
in
need,
and
no
one
can
complain
to
you
about
how
harsh
a
winter
might
be
in
Asheville,
because
he
is
from
Buffalo
New
York.
So
you
know

he
knows
a
thing
or
two
about
that
as
well.
