Description
Learn about the new Sheriff's Office Executive Reserve Volunteer Program in this News Update.
A
Well,
the
serve
program
and
that's
the
sheriff's
executive
reserve.
Volunteers
is
a
program
that
came
about
from
a
larger
idea
that
comes
from
the
Department
of
Justice
and
basically
it
has
a
certain
criteria
and
structure
to
it
that
set
up
federally
to
where
we
can
take
the
community
resource,
which
we
have
a
lot
of
people
in
Buncombe
County,
who
want
to
volunteer
for
the
sheriff's
office
and
puts
them
to
work
in
a
way.
A
B
Who
come
in
to
serve
are
really
given
basic
information
about
the
office
of
the
sheriff.
What
goes
on
here
and
how
it
functions,
and
then
they
can
choose
what
areas
they
think
they're
interested
in
I
could
be
patrol.
It
could
be
Criminal,
Investigation
Division.
It
could
be
victim
assistance,
it
doesn't
matter.
The
issue
is
to
find
areas
in
which
they
are
comfortable
so
that
they
will
enjoy
coming
in
and
want
to
do
the
job.
So.
A
We
will
put
them
out
there
with
their
communication
tools
in
a
vehicle
that
is
clearly
marked
volunteer,
but
also
has
in
Buncombe
County
Sheriff's
markings
on
it,
and
they
will
be
there
to
communicate
and
input
an
extra
presence.
Also.
They
can
help
us
with
funeral
escorts
and
also
some
of
the
extra
checks
on
own
houses
that
folks
are
away
during
the
summer
vacation
houses
that
they
would.
They
would
like
an
officer
to
ride
by
which
is
really
tough
to
do
with
your
full-time
officers,
who
are
answering
calls
for
service.
We.
B
Are
not
sworn
officers,
we
do
not
carry
weapons,
we
do
not
have
the
power
of
arrest
and
we
also
do
not
have
blue
lights
on
our
vehicles,
so
we
cannot
act
as
a
law
enforcement
officer.
In
fact,
that
is
one
of
our
biggest
jobs
in
recruiting
and
taking
people
into
the
organization
is
to
get
people
who
want
to
augment
the
sheriff's
office
not
to
replace
deputies
who
are
already
in
the
office.
This.
A
Year,
we're
on
track
to
answer
about
70,000
calls
for
service,
and
we
do
that
with
fairly
limited
resources
so
anytime,
that
we
can
take
community
volunteers
and
put
them
out
there
to
help
us
accomplish
our
goal
and
give
better
customer
service
to
the
people
of
buncombe
county.
We
think
it's
definitely
a
win.
The.
B
Training
is
two
days
in
length
and
it
involves
first
getting
a
background
check
to
make
sure
that
they
can
work
in
a
secure
area
like
the
sheriff's
office.
The
second
is
to
introduce
them
to
the
sheriff's
office
and
the
different
functions
that
go
on
here
and
the
different
departments
which
exist,
so
they
get
a
better
idea
of
what's
available
what
they
might
be
interested
in
and
where
they
might
have
their
best
fit.
The
actual
training
comes
from
the
department
or
part
of
the
department
where
they're
going
to
be
volunteering.
B
A
The
seven
years
that
I've
been
here
I've
had
a
number
of
people
come
in
to
volunteer
to
work,
and
the
problem
is,
unless
you
have
a
structure
and
a
task
around
how
you
do
that
that
that
can
present
a
lot
of
times
more
problems
than
it
solves.
So
we
actually
took
the
time-
and
we
dedicated
a
cop's
team
for
30
days
to
look
at
that
at
that
situation,
and
they
came
back
with
this
federal
program,
this
DOJ
program
and
we
actually
dialed
it
into
best
fits
the
Buncombe
County
Sheriff's
Office.
B
You
want
to
give
back
to
the
community
and
you
like
the
idea
of
being
in
a
law
enforcement
environment,
or
you
have
experience
in
a
type
of
organization
which
is
similar
to
a
sheriff's
office.
This
is
a
great
place
for
you
to
come
in,
provide
your
talents,
provide
your
skills
and
give
back
to
the
community
and
also
give
back
to
yourself
because
there's
a
lot
of
reward
here.
The
main
thing
that
has
come
back
to
me
is
that
the
number
of
people
who
have
said
thank
you
they
come
up.
B
A
Bigger
picture
of
this
is
to
be
able
to
avoid
having
to
use
more
taxpayer
dollars
to
hire
full-time
employees
to
meet
all
the
needs
of
the
240,000
people
that
we
have
in
Buncombe
County,
and
it's
really
taken
that
resource
to
build
capacity
of
volunteers
that
can
go
out
and
work
in
a
very
structured
way
and
in
a
limited
capacity
to
meet
a
lot
of
that
need.
So
we
don't
have
to
continue
to
hire
additional
officers.
