Description
Take a look inside the WIC Program in this episode of Buncombe Life. You've probably seen WIC logos all over your local grocery store, but what does it mean? Learn all about WIC, it's improved services, all all of the benefits that come along with it in this episode.
A
Have
you
ever
been
shopping
say
like
a
tan
ingles
like
we
are
here
today
and
noticed,
as
you
came
up,
maybe
see
to
the
produce
aisle
and
saw
WIC
approved
item
and
I
can
count
one
two
three
four
five
lots
of
items
right
here
that
say
that.
Well,
if
you're
like
me,
you've
wondered
so
in
this
edition
of
buncombe
life.
We're
going
to
fill
you
in
when
you
finish
watching
you'll
know
all
there
is
to
know
about
WIC
and
you'll
be
able
to
help.
Maybe
yourself,
maybe
somebody
else
so
stay
tuned
and
find
out.
A
I'm
here
with
sarah
bennett
with
the
WIC
program.
Now
don't
worry
if
you
don't
know
what
that
is,
we're
going
to
find
out.
I've
done
shows
about
wick
before
so
it's
a
program,
that's
been
around
for
a
while
mm-hmm,
but
if
everybody
at
home
is
like
me,
they
they
have
no
clue
right
what
that
is,
but
they
need
to
know
so.
Stereo
tell
us
what
what
basically
what
is
wick
and
who
uses
it.
Okay,.
B
A
So
that's
who
can
use
the
program
okay,
so
how,
in
this
program,
like
you
said,
is
federally
funded
in
here
and
but
how
do
you
use
it
because
I
think
we
were
having
a
conversation?
It's
a
program.
That's
been
around
a
long
time,
but
the
usage
instead
of
going
up.
He
is
going
down
right,
but
nobody
can
argue
that
there's
not
people
out
there
who
need
it
correct
so
who
can
use
it
and
you
think
that's
a
problem.
If
people
don't
know
I
think.
B
B
A
B
That's
what
we
call
the
category
eligibility
but
there's
also
the
financial
eligibility.
So
anyone
who
has
a
household
income
at
one
hundred
eighty
five
percent
poverty
or
below
qualifies
for
WIC
benefits,
which
that
financial
qualification
is
a
little
bit
higher
than
say
Medicaid
or
food
stamps,
so
family
that
maybe
doesn't
quite
qualify
for
Medicaid
or
food
assistance
could
still
potentially
qualify
for
WIC
benefits.
Right
now,.
B
B
They
should
call
us
and
find
out
if
they
meet
all
of
those
guidelines
to
qualify
for
the
program,
so
they
can
just
call
us
at
the
county,
number
250
5,000
and
ask
the
information
needed,
and
if
those
questions
can't
be
answered
at
that
phone
conversation,
they
will
transfer
them
specifically
to
a
WIC
staff.
To
answer
any
of
those
questions
also
we're
open
825
825
monday
through
friday,
and
anyone
can
stop
by
one
of
our
four
offices
to.
A
A
Did
you
catch
that
one
of
the
four
yes?
All
of
it
says
I
did
not
know
that
until
we
came
to
do
this
interview,
yep
we're
here
at
this
location,
which
is
on
I,
wouldn't
have
known,
you
were
here
in
the
huddle
house,
run
at
the
interstate
yeah,
but
the
address
is
on
the
screen
yeah,
but
there's
three
more.
B
Locate
there
are
that,
yes,
so
we
have
this
location
here.
We
are
also
located
off
Lester
highway
in
west
asheville.
We
have
an
office
located
inside
may,
heck
ob-gyn
and
the
clients
that
we
serve.
There
are
also
patients
of
May,
heck
ob/gyn
and
that's
a
requirement,
and
then
we
also
have
a
clinic
inside
of
winches
or
mini
Jones
community
health
center,
and
also
those
WIC
participants
are
also
patients
of
that
health
care
center.
You.
A
Have
any
other
idea
why
your
numbers
could
be
wrong,
I
think
it's
is,
it
may
be
the
the
food
they
could
gain,
or
is
it's
complicated
to
use
the
program
yeah.
B
So
I
think
there's
a
myth
that
the
appointments
take
a
very
long
time
and
we've
actually
just
completed
a
time
study
and
to
really
dispel
that
myth,
our
average
appointment
times
or
anywhere
from
25
to
60
minutes
depending
on
what
type
of
appointment
it
is
so.
A
B
Have
really
been
streamlined
in
recent
years,
which
I
think
is
a
benefit
I,
think
that
maybe
some
people
still
think
of
WIC
as
the
formula
program
which
we
do
provide
infant
formula
to
those
children
and
infants
that
aren't
breastfeeding.
But
we
are
so
much
more.
We
have
lots
of
referral
sources,
the
nutrition,
education
and
also
breastfeeding
support
I
mentioned.
A
B
Heard
of
it
yeah
yeah,
so
the
food
package
I
think
in
many
years
passed
before
I
came.
There
was
some
limited
options
which
that's
changed
a
lot.
So
the
food
package
today
looks
like
low
fat,
dairy,
whole
grains,
fresh
fruits
and
vegetables,
some
protein
foods
and
a
little
bit
of
juice.
So
it's
changed
quite
a
bit
and
there
are
a
lot
of
other
options
besides
just
cheap
right.
So.
B
Right
now,
that's
a
great
question,
so
we
offer
on
dairy
products
like
milk,
cheese
and
yogurt
whole
grain
cereals.
We
also
offer
a
whole
grain
option
and
the
the
grains
that
you
can
choose
from
would
be
whole
wheat,
bread,
corn
or
whole
wheat,
tortillas,
brown,
rice
or
whole
wheat
pasta.
We
also
offer
protein
foods
like
peanut
butter,
beans,
eggs
and,
in
some
cases,
even
salmon
or
tuna.
B
We
offer
what's
called
a
cash
value
voucher,
and
that
is
a
voucher
with
a
specific
dollar
amount
printed
on
it
and
it
can
be
spent
in
the
grocery
store
on
fresh
frozen,
our
canned
fruits
and
vegetables.
Whatever
the
client
would
like
to
use
it
for
Wow
100%
juice
and
also,
of
course,
for
the
babies
that
aren't
breastfeeding.
We
have
infant
formula
and
baby
foods
for
any
infant
over
the
age
of
six
months,
but
it's.
B
A
B
A
B
That's
a
long
time,
it
is
a
long
time,
yeah
and
I.
Think
one
of
the
most
recent
studies
that
I
have
read
that
was
published
stated
that
some
of
the
declining
participation
might
be
related
to
the
older
children
falling
off
the
program
once
they
get
into
those
toddler
years.
Two
three
four
years
of
age
aren't
continuing
on
the
WIC
program
right
they
could
they're
just
not
exactly
and
whether
that's
because
they
don't
understand
that
they
can
or
or
a
different
reason
right
now,.
A
B
I
think
just
keeping
in
mind
that
any
any
woman
with
that's
pregnant
or
has
a
up
to
five
years
of
age
and
and
potentially
also
falls
into
the
financial
category
should
be
encouraged
to
call
or
if
you
know,
someone
who
might
fall
into
that
category
should
be
encouraged
to
call
and
then
also
just
keeping
in
mind
that
wick
is
so
much
more
than
just
a
food
voucher.
It's
the
nutrition
education
and
the
breastfeeding
support
and
the
relationship
that
we
establish
with
these
families
at
times
goes
on
for
five
years.
B
B
A
So
the
next
time
you're
shopping
at
several
different
stores
in
our
area.
Engels
is
definitely
one
of
them,
but
lots
of
stores
I
want
you
to
pay
attention
cuz
now
you
know
what
WIC
means,
and
these
little
these
little
stickers
are
everywhere,
they're
all
throughout
the
store.
Now
that
I've
noticed
I
noticed
that
there's
a
lot
of
them
there's
a
lot
of
different
food
items
that
could
help
out.
A
Maybe
you
maybe
someone
you
know
so
if
you
know
someone
who
could
use
WIC
and
really
be
helped
in
their
food
budget
in
their
life
with
all
kinds
of
stuff,
not
just
food,
but
nutrition
ideas
and
relationship
building,
it's
really
a
great
program
stay
tuned
at
the
end.
Well,
we'll
give
you
some
more
details
about
in
case
you
missed
it,
how
you
can
hook
up
with
WIC
food
items
and
with
all
of
their
help.
A
A
lot
of
you
may
already
know
what
WIC
is
it's
a
supplemental
nutrition
program
for
pregnant
women,
postpartum
women,
infants
and
children,
but
do
you
know
how
much
food
you
get
by
being
part
of
the
program?
For
example,
if
you're
a
woman
who
is
currently
breastfeeding,
you'll
get
this
much
every
month,
you.
A
With
WIC
you
get
milk
juice,
fruits,
vegetables,
eggs,
cheese,
baby,
food
beans,
cereal,
whole
grain,
bread,
peanut
butter
and
even
tuna
and
salmon
wit.
Guidelines
are
different
from
federal
poverty
guidelines,
so
you
may
be
eligible
and
not
even
know
it
to
make
an
appointment
for
WIC
services,
call
828,
250
5000
and
for
more
information
visit,
