I
guess
I
guess
I've
heard
all
of
my
life
and
as
a
as
I
became
more
interested
in
it,
it
occurred
to
me.
Had
the
carter
family
not
recorded
it
and
popularized
it
song
would
have
been
lost
great
old
song,
and
I
thought
well,
you
know
what
might
I
do
to
help
this
song
find
some
new
ears
that
will
what,
if
I
kept
the
original
lyrics,
wherever
they
are,
whatever
they
are,
and
I
wrote
new
music
and
then
I
struggled
with
the
ethics
of
that.
A
A
The
original
music,
with
the
copyright
date
down
at
the
bottom,
a
copyright
date
of
1899.,
so
I'm
going
to
open
with
the
song
we
we
took
some
liberties
with
it.
I
I
work
with
some
other
guys
and
I
was
thinking
man
man.
What
cool
stuff
could
we
do
with
this
song?
So
I
wrote
new
music.
All
this
music
is
mine
and
she
mentioned.
I
have
a
real
interest
in
electronics.
This
goes
way
back.
You
know
first,
first
generation
before
there
were
standards
and
norms,
electronic
music
and
I've
got
it
stored
in
all
this
stuff.
B
B
C
A
A
We
got
carla
george
under
the
red
and
white
umbrella
jack
sitting
right
here
in
front
max.
It
is
just
remarkable
and
alan,
making
literally
part
of
the
lure
to
doing
this
gig
is
they
told
me
how
great
the
food
would
be
see,
see.
A
A
I
think
it's
important
when,
when
you're
in
showbiz
that
you
understand
that
you
understand
the
timing,
you
understand
you
want
to
make
things
relevant.
That's
why
I
want
to
tell
you
a
winter
story
about
snowmen.
It's
it's!
It's
it's
all
these
years
in
in
show
business
that
that
just
makes
me
oh
gee,
I
I
can.
I
can
make
this
relatable
a
story
about
a
cold
january
day
on
a
pretty
warm
august
day
in
1957.
A
A
It
was
singular
the
clayton
apartments
on
the
johnson
city,
kingsport,
highway,
very,
very
working
class.
It's
a
block,
two-story
building
painted
white.
The
only
feature
that
was
remarkable
was
a
long
staircase
to
the
right
side
that
went
to
our
apartment
on
the
upper
level
when
you're
five
years
old,
going
up
a
lot
of
stairs
is
a
slow
process,
but
I
had
no
fear
of
falling
down
them.
A
A
It
had
snowed,
I
mean
it
had
really
snowed,
maybe
a
foot
and
a
half
a
few
days
earlier,
but
the
roads
had
been
clear,
so
mom
had
gone
to
work.
My
dad
worked
the
late
night
shift
now
in
washington,
county
tennessee.
That's
called
the
graveyard
shift.
Maybe
it's
called
that
elsewhere,
but
there
everybody
called
it
the
graveyard
shift.
A
My
dad
says
to
me
put
on
your
warm
coat:
let's
go
outside
I'm
five
years
old.
I
would
have
already
been
outside
what
you
know.
What's
the
delay
in
the
invitation
so
bundled
up
down
those
long
stairs,
we
go
out
to
the
front
yard
wading
through
the
snow.
I
mean
it
was
really
deep
when
you're
five
years
old
and
my
dad
starts
making
a
snowball,
and
I
think
there
is
no
way
I'm
winning
a
snowball
fall
fight
with
this
giant.
You
know
this
giant
he's
like
5
8.
A
I'm
losing
I'm
losing,
but
he
didn't
stop
at
a
snowball.
It
kept
getting
larger
and
larger.
So
I
chimed
in.
We
had
our
first
father-son
project
a
snowman
and
there's
an
obligatory
guy
thing.
The
women
will
acknowledge
this
when
a
guy
finishes
doing
a
project.
We
have
to
take
a
few
steps
back
right.
We
take
a
few
steps
back,
no
matter
how
lame
the
project
we
think
it
looks
great
and
that's
what
we
did.
The
father-son
few
steps
back
pretty
cool,
so
we
go
back
inside
to
warm
up
after
a
couple
hours.
A
My
dad
issues,
the
invitation,
hey.
You
want
to
go
back
outside
absolutely
I'm
ready
to
go.
Let's
go
down
those
long
stairs
out
to
the
front
yard,
again
wading
through
the
snow
and
he
starts
building
another
snow
sculpture
and
I
jump
in,
but
this
one's
much
smaller
and
we
complete
it.
It's
a
snow
boy,
so
we
have
a
a
snowman,
a
snow
boy.
A
I
think
wow
when
I
took
the
obligatory
few
steps
back.
I'm
thinking
this
is
biblical.
This
is
in
our
own
likeness,
remarkable
cool,
so
he's
getting
cold,
I'm
not
cold.
Kids!
Don't
get
cold.
It's
not
possible
back
up
the
stairs
we
go
and
late
in
the
afternoon.
I
hear
that
mischievous
voice.
I
have
heard
oh
so
many
times
even
at
the
age
of
five.
A
A
A
A
No,
he
continues.
He
continues.
Building
a
an
anatomically,
correct,
snow
woman,
not
just
slightly.
I
mean
this
guy's
doing
augmentation,
and
I'm
I'm
not
touching
this.
I
want
to
be
able
to
tell
the
judge
and
the
jury
I
wasn't
involved
and
he
just
won't
stop
until
gravity
takes
over
and
that's
all
the
augmentation.
A
Oh
and
he
gets
this
little
smirk,
you
know
this
little
smiley
smirk
gets
his
smirk
pop.
I
wish
you
wouldn't
do
this.
This
is
a
bad
idea.
I
didn't
take
the
steps
back,
but
he
did
and
he
had
the
luck
he
had.
The
look
what's
going
through
my
five-year-old
mind
is
anxiety.
I'm
five.
I
shouldn't
have
anxiety,
I'm
thinking
my
mother's
going
to
come
home.
She
is
going
to
kill
him.
I
won't
have
a
father.
She
will
be
in
prison,
I'll
be
an
orphan.
How
can
he
possibly
do
this
to
me?
A
We
go
back
inside
it's
pushing
five
o'clock
when
traffic
is
going
to
be
building
up
what
little
traffic
there
is
building
up
on
the
johnson
city
kingsport
highway,
and
indeed
it
did,
but
it
starts
becoming
dark.
It's
close
to
dusk,
I'm
thinking,
oh,
oh
god
is
actually
going
to
save
us.
It'll
be
dark.
Mom
won't
see
this.
A
And
then
the
headlights
of
the
cars
came
on
and
the
terrain
and
the
curvature
of
that
two-lane
road
were
such
that
if
you
were
coming
from
kingsport
the
direction
my
mom's
going
to
be
coming
from
the
first
thing
the
headlights
are
going
to
hit
is
the
anatomically,
correct
woman
and
a
good
profile
view
cars
start
slowing
down.
This
is
like
field
of
dreams,
the
headlights.
If
you
build
an
anatomically,
correct,
snow
woman,
they
will
come.
A
That
is
indeed
what
happened
and
as
I'm
looking
out
as
I'm
looking
out
the
front
window,
I
see
my
mom
pull
in
the
driveway.
I'm
thinking
this
is
it.
This
is
the
end
of
life.
As
I
know
it
up.
Those
long
stairs
took
her
no
time
up
the
long
stairs
in
through
the
door
slammed
it
straight
to
the
linen
closet,
got
out
a
blanket
and
a
pillow
made
a
bed
on
the
sofa
and
said
to
him.
A
B
B
B

A
A
A
A
B
A
A
There
was
a
little
girl
that
needed
a
home
and
needed
love.
My
grandparents
gave
her
both
no
formal
adoption,
just
the
decent
thing
for
mountain
people.
To
do
so.
Imagine
when
all
the
kids
were
at
the
table
and
my
grandparents,
my
grandmother,
cooked
from
scratch
three
country
meals
a
day
on
an
old
woodcook
stove,
even
when
she
got
an
electric
range.
She
wouldn't
stop
cooking
on
that
wood
cook
stove
and
it
was
great.
A
A
A
A
Eventually,
we
walked
up
the
steps
and,
through
the
double
doors
and
onto
the
aisle,
and
there
in
front
of
us
in
front
of
the
pulpit,
was
my
grandmother's
coffin.
The
lid
was
open
and
you
can
see
the
profile.
You
can
see
the
silhouette
of
her
face
and
I
realized
it
would
be
the
last
time
that
I
would
see
my
grandmother
and
the
last
time
my
father,
the
baby
of
nine,
would
see
his
beloved
mother.
A
And
the
preacher
finished
preaching
her
funeral
when
he
did.
The
palm
bears
approached.
I've
only
seen
this
this
one
time.
What
would
unfold
is
the
palm
bears,
while
the
congregation
seated
the
palm
bears,
would
pick
up
the
coffin
and
they
would
do
a
funeral
march
down
the
aisle
out
those
front
doors.

A
Thank
you,
I'm
going
to
do
one
more
before
I
do
that.
I
do
want
to
make
a
point
to
make
sure
that
everyone
that
is
involved-
or
at
least
the
ones
here
are
recognized
carla
friends
of
the
library
anyone
here
from
the
friends
group,
friends
of
the
library
how
about
the
swan
and
noah
community
council
excellent.
Thank
you.
Thank
you.
These
are
the
folks
alan
allen
who
is
known
worldwide
for
food.
A
Thank
you,
alan
and
we're
really
looking
forward
to
to
alan
george
is
somewhere,
don't
george
george's
over
oh
there's,
george,
under
the
tent
and
jack,
and
I
got
to
tell
you
the
sound
today
is
really
good.
I
work
with
a
lot
of
sound
folks.
A
A
A
We
have
t-shirts,
we
have
cds,
we
have
burned
cds
from
a
let's
see
an
affiliate
of
national
public
radio
and
we
will
be
dropping
I've
done
a
couple
of
songs
this
evening
that
are
new
songs
that
we're
going
to
be
dropping
around
the
first
of
the
year.
I'm
going
to
end
with
one
of
those
songs.
