The Buncombe County Parks, Greenways and Recreation have a wide variety of activities going on throughout the year, for every age and energy level. Join host Angie Hall as she familiarizes viewers to county parks, greenways, and recreational facilities within Buncombe County and Black Mountain. She introduces us to the friendly staff promoting upcoming and ongoing events and activities throughout the area. Come out & Play provides opportunities to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors of the Buncombe County Community through: Health, Wellness, Recreation, Culture, and Educational Opportunities. Buncombe County Parks, Greenways and Recreation and Black Mountain Recreation and Parks are located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.

beautiful
autumn
day
here
in
Asheville
and
it's
the
perfect
opportunity
to
find
out
about
the
events
and
programs
that
your
local
parks
and
recreation
departments
have
going
on
right.

about
events
in
Black,
Mountain,

town

Black,
Mountain
recreation
parks,
department
and
I'm
standing
out
front

Gray
Eagle
arena
in
front
of
this
mural
on
that
grace
is
the
side
of
the
building
that
was
painted
as
several
years
ago
by
some
warren
wilson
college
students.
For
us,
the
Gray
Eagle
is
home
to
our
indoor
soccer
programming.

We
have
a
youth
recreational
league
that
happens
in
the
fall
and
winter,
and
you
can
sign
up
for
that
through
november
nineteenth
and
that's
for
youth
under
the
age
of
11
years
old.
If
you
miss
the
winter
session,
we
do
have
a
spring
session
that
starts
up
in
March
and
so
give
us
a

beginning
of
March
to
sign
up
for
those
spring
soccer
leagues
here
at
the
Gray
Eagle
of
arena.

this
fall,
a
competitive
soccer
league
and
that
is
for
ages
high
school
ages,

we
also

men's

women's
divisions
and
a
co-ed
division
on
the
competitive
soccer
leagues
and
for
those

an
entire
team
at
once
and
you

This
facility
is
also
available
for
rent,
which
is
a
great
resource
in
the
wintertime
when
it's
getting
cold
outside,
but
you
might
want
to
have
a
birthday
party,
and
that
involves
a
little
bit
of
activity.
It's
a
great
place
to
have
a
kid's
birthday
party.
We
do
rent
it
by
the
hour
or
we
you
can
also
drop
in
just
for
open
gym.
On
Wednesday
nights.

have
a
women's
open,
gym
soccer
night
and
on
Friday
nights,
it's
just
open
gym
for
everyone
coed,
and
it's
just
a
couple
dollars
to
come
in
and
have
some
fun
and
play
and
meet
some
new
people
and
also
practice
for
those
competitive
leagues.

Greenway
Trail.

You
just
make
the
turn
onto
white
pine
drive,
which
is
where
the
gray
Eagle's
soccer
arena
is
located,
and
so
the
loop
does
connect
the
Gray
Eagle
soccer
arena
over
to
black
mountain
recreation
park
and
there's
a
nice
pedestrian
underpass
that
will
take
you
under
the
interstate
and
connect
into
recreation
park.
The
trail
itself,
as
I
said
it's
a
half
mile
long
loop
and
it
kind
of
winds
around
our
18
hole,
disc
golf
course,
as
well
as
our
community
gardens.
You
can
see
what's
growing
in
the
garden
and
just
enjoy
some
really
lovely
mountain
views.

From
this
trail,
the
plantings
along
the
trail
feature
native
wildflowers
and
also
edible
native
plant
trees
and
shrubs.
So
you'll
see
blueberry
plantings,
fig
trees.
We've
got
some
service,
berries
and
elderberries
all
kinds
of
different
different
plants
and
shrubs
along
the
trail
that
will
be
coming
really
into
bloom
in
the
spring
they
just
got
planted.

This
fall
so
it'll
take
them
a
little
while
to
get
established
but
I
hope
you'll
come
out
and
enjoy
this
new
trail
and
our
disc
golf
course
I'm
standing
here
at
on
the
deck
of
the
Lakeview
Center
at
Lake
tomahawk
in
black
mountain,
and
this
facility
is
available
for
rentals
for
private
parties
and
it's
an
especially
good
facility
for
your
winter
holiday
parties
and
spring
weddings.
We
do
offer
special
weekday
rental
rates,
that's
great
for
a
holiday
party,
and
then
we
have
a
new
wedding
package.

looking

spring
or
a
fall
wedding
date,
give

wedding

and
go
ahead
and

because
those
dates
do
fill
up
fast

the
spring
and
fall
peak

people
upstairs
and
about
60
people
downstairs
and
you
can
rent
them
together

separate,
and
it
also
comes
with
tables
and
chairs
at
no
additional
charge.

Today,
for
the
third
year
in
a
row,
the
black
mountain
recreation
and
in
parks
department
has
partnered
with
the
Black
Mountain
center
for
the
arts
and
the
beautification
committee,
and
to
put
on
the
Black
Mountain
sculpture,
stroll
so
you'll
find
around
downtown
Black
Mountain
and
in
some
of
our
parks
that
there's
some
sculptures
placed
by
local
artists
in
Lake
tomahawk.
You
can
come
visit
the
hippo
and
if
you
stop
by
our
Carver
community
center,
you
can
pick
up
a
brochure
that
will
map
out
all
the
locations
of
the
sculptures
throughout
town
so
come
see.

month

Senior
Center
goes

two
trips
and
for
the
month
of
November
we
will
be
doing
a
volunteer
trip
and
a
shopping
trip
on
November
16th
will
be
driving
over
to
Charlotte
to
do
some
holiday
shopping
at
ikea
and
Trader
Joe's.

will
leave
the
Senior
Center
at
10am,
eat
lunch
and
Charlotte
and
return
by
6pm
if
you're
interested

either

trips.

with
over
300
luminaries
that
encircle
the
lake

be

rides

live,
entertainment
and
lots
of
fun
will

a
bonfire

keep
you
warm

out.

gloves
on
and
enjoy
the
holidays

with
the

mountain
recreation

annual
Valentine
5k
run.

The
5k
run
hat
begins
at
recreation
park
off

Blue
Ridge
Road.
It
is
twenty-five
dollars
per
person.
There's
also
the
one-mile
kids
run
a
Valentine
Run
has
all
sorts
of
different
categories.
You
can
run
in
a
couple
as
a
husband
and
wife,
sister
and
sister
mother
and
daughter,
there's
all
different
kinds
of
categories
to
celebrate
the
Valentine
holiday.

place

exercise

swim
during
the
winter
months
when
it's
too
cold
to
be
outside
our
lap.

is

wednesday
and
friday

We're
just
starting
up
want
to
tell
you
a
little
bit
about
the
garden
buncombe
county
parks,
greenways
and
Recreation
Services
received
a
grant
from
nourishing
North
Carolina
in
conjunction
with
blue
cross
blue
shield
of
north
carolina
in
hopes
that
all
counties
in
north
carolina
would
each
be
able
to
have
a
community
garden
in
their
County.
We
received
the
grant
this
past
summer
and
are
just
now
getting
started
up
and
hope
to
have
plantings
in
the
spring
of
2012.
Part
of
our
garden
produce
will
go
to
manna.

Food
Bank
and
the
other
parts
will
be
distributed
among
the
community
members
who
take
part
in
planning
and
tending
the
garden
over
the
next
spring
and
summer
months.
The
community
garden
project
will
be
a
joint
venture
between
buncombe
county
parks,
greenways
and
Recreation
Area
partners
and
local
community
members.
It
will
not
only
provide
healthy
food,
it
will
also
provide
a
safe
area
for
our
neighbors
to
work
together
and
share
public
green
space
right
now.
Our
garden
may
look
small
as
it
starting
out,
but
we
hope
to
grow.

big
area
that
we
can
continue
to
grow
in.

sports
park

just

through
a
master
planning
process
for
the
updates

enhancements
to
the
park.
The
award

the
nourishing
North
Carolina
grant
will
allow
buncombe
county
parks,
greenways

recreation
services
to
take

first
steps
and
implementing
the
recommendations
set
forth
in
the
master
plan.

year's
events
going
to
begin
on
December
the
first
and
on
the
first
we're
going
to
have
to
offer
a
different
twist
for
this
year's
show
we're
going
to
have
a
walkthrough
option
within
the
walkthrough
option,
we're
going
to
have
some
activities
and
things
for
the
kids.
The
price
on
the
walkthrough
is
going
to
be
five
dollars
for
adults
and
three
dollars
for
kids.
Our
regular
show
will
begin
on
friday,
December
the
second
and
will
run
through
December,
the
18th.
That's
every
night,
December
second,
through
December,
eighteenth
it'll,
be
just
like.

We've
done
in
the
past
drive
through
stay
in
your
vehicle.
It's
five
dollars
per
car
to
come
through.
If
you
have
a
15-passenger
van,
it's
fifteen
dollars
and
a
larger
bus,
it's
$25,
last
year's
show
we

about
4,000
cars
come
through,
so
we're
hoping
to
exceed

year.

we're

the
ribbon
cutting
ceremony
of
the
walking
trail
extension.
You
see
behind
me
and
I'm
really
happy,
because
Commissioner
Peterson
is
going
to
be
here

help
us
celebrate,
cutting
the
ribbon
for
us
and
telling
us
some
great
words
about
how
important
our
parks
are
for
Buncombe
County.
So
this
walking
trail
extension
will
complete
almost
three
quarters
of
a
mile
down
here
at
Alexander
park.

Some
of
the
most
important,
in
my
opinion,
environmental
benefits
of
greenways,
is
just
the
fact
that
we
get
people
into
nature
and
they're
able
to
see
some
of
the
processes
that
are
involved
in
that
we
also
can
integrate
interpretive
signage
and
educational
material
into
the
greenways.
So
this
is
a
great
opportunity
to
get
that
public
exposure
that
we're
looking
for.
