Join host Angie Hall as she provides information about the upcoming programs and events taking place this Spring in Buncombe County and Town of Black Mountain. Come Out & Play provides opportunities for the entire family to get out and enjoy sports and fun activities. Angie reminds everyone that the Sand Hill Community Garden at the Sports Park is in full swing with planting of the spring crops and is always in need of volunteers. The Kids Fishing Tournament will be held Saturday, April 27th at Lake Julian Park. Kids who are 15 and under compete for the 'biggest' fish, 'smallest' fish and 'most' fish caught. Special Olympics Spring Games will be held at TC Roberson High School on Thursday, May 2. Buncombe County's outdoor pools will open soon and the Super Summer Meals program will be offered again this summer. Cyndy Kirkland with Black Mountain Recreation and Parks shares events and programs taking place there. Seniors can enjoy the many programs at the Lakeview Senior Center. Join the staff for a bike ride, canoeing down the French Broad and many more activities. Buncombe County Parks, Greenways and Recreation and Black Mountain Recreation and Parks are located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.

Hi and welcome to our spring episode of come out and play I'm. Your host, ng Hall, bogan, County, Parks, greenways and Recreation Services and Black Mountain, Recreation and Parks has lots of fun events and programs this spring for the entire family. We have our semiannual kids fishing tournament spring games for Special, Olympics, gardening for the whole family and a special treat for the kids at the polls this summer. But first, let's go fishing. The kids fishing tournament at Lake Julian park is our semiannual spring event.

This is for kids up to age 15, who want to compete and catching the most fish, smallest fish and biggest fish. The fishing tournament will be held at Lake Julian Park on Saturday April 27th from 830 a.m. to 1130am kids will need to bring their own fishing pole and bait. This is a catch and release event, so a bucket will be provided for your catch. Cost is only five dollars and includes lunch after the event, and there will be prizes.

Galore children will be grouped into five H categories and prizes will be awarded in each of those categories for the most fish, the biggest fish and the smallest fish cult. So even the youngest kids have a chance at winning a prize so for a fun morning of fishing with your child. You can pre-register for this event by giving David blue a call at eight to eight 6840 376, or you can register the day of the event starting at 8am.

Another opportunity for kids to fish is right here at the Owen Park in swannanoa, every Saturday and Sunday throughout the summer, Buncombe County Park screen when recreation and the North Carolina, Fish and Wildlife Federation will be voting fishing poles and tackle to children under 16. For those children that have never held a fishing pole in their hands, then this is their opportunity. This is also an excellent opportunity to encourage your kids to get outdoors and a chance to learn and participate in the sport of angling and best of all it's free.

All you have to do is show up with your bait. Fishing poles and tackle will be available. Every Saturday from ten a.m. to two p.m. and Sunday's from ten a.m. to six pm. Now it may be a little cool to take a dip in one of our outdoor pools, but don't let that stop you from getting some water exercise and activities come join us at the sword. Nurse center open lap swimming takes place monday, wednesday and friday from 832, 1030am and tuesday and thursday from 832. 10Am cost is only three dollars and fifty cents per day or twenty-five dollars per month. If you are into water exercise, then come by on tuesday and thursday, from 10 to 11 a.m.

cost is only four dollars per class or 24 to 27 per month, bring the family out on sundays for open swim. You can swim from one-thirty to five for only three dollars per person or you can purchase a 10-digit pass for twenty dollars or 25 visit paths. For forty dollars, the center has an activity room that is available for rent by the hour. If you want to have a birthday party, then you can also reserve the pool the sword.

Nurse center is located at 90, springside drive and south asheville behind TC roberson, high school and speaking of pools. Buncombe county has five outdoor pools, one in each district cane, creek, irwin, hominy valley, north buncombe and owen, and no the pools are not open yet, but summer is just around the corner, beginning Memorial, Day weekend, all outdoor pools will be open on weekends. Once school is out, the polls will be open.

Seven days a week, Monday through Friday noon, to 545 saturday from 11 to 6, 45 and sunday from 1 to 6, 45 costas, three dollars per person and discount passes are available. The super summer meals program will be offered again this year. The program provides free lunches to any child who's 18 years old or younger. The Buncombe County Schools child nutrition program collaborated with the emblem foundation: the North Carolina Department of Health Human, Services, Buncombe, County, Parks, greenways and Recreation, and others to launch the program.

Last year, because it was such a success, it is being offered again this year. Mil sites will include schools, churches and community centers and some of the buckham county pools. That means that all children who come to the outdoor pools hosting the program the summer will receive a free bag lunch parents there is no need to apply for this program, just bring your child to any of the sites. It's that simple, approximately 2,000 children will have an opportunity to enjoy a free lunch at various sites throughout the county.

Blake julian park offers an array of fun activities and special events for friends and families. Throughout the year you can rent a paddle, boat, canoe or jon boat to take out on the water. You can also bring your own private craft, including your fishing boat, with electric motors, canoe, kayak or sailboat to their boat launch.

Lake Julian also features many popular annual events like the kids fishing tournaments. The fourth of July fireworks display a horseshoe tournament for all ages and the beautiful festival of lights display.

The park also offers picturesque family picnic areas, a fun playground for the kiddies and a beach volleyball court. If you're, an avid angler grab your rod and reel because Lake Julian is quite the catch. There are many species of fish ready to be caught on Lake Julian, including catfish bass and even tilapia. Did you know? Lake Julian is also the perfect place to have a family reunion or company retreat with six picnic pavilions of various sizes, complete with tables that can accommodate 35 to 75 people, grills and clean restrooms.

Welcome back the scent hill community garden at the Buncombe County Sports Park is in full swing with plantings for the spring and summer. Growing season purpose of the community garden is to supply fresh vegetables for manna. Food, Bank garden helpers. Have this satisfaction of helping manna, Food Bank feed the hungry in Buncombe County and for their hard work and time they rewarded with seasonal vegetables for their personal use.

Ten percent of each harvest is donated to manna Food, Bank and the rest is distributed among volunteers, buncombe, county parks, greenways and recreation will be partnering with the inca branch library to present story times at the garden this summer, every tuesday, beginning june, twenty fifth Melissa giddens, the children's librarian and anchor will be telling stories about gardening.

So much is happening at the garden stop by and see. What's growing, the central community garden is located at the sand.

Hill Venable elementary school and the Buncombe County Sports Complex, just look for the purple, yellow and blue barn quilt located on our garden, shed so who's in for a round of mini golf. Well, it's time for the 7th annual child, adult mini golf tournament. This is located at tropical gardens on patton avenue on saturday april. Twentieth teams will consist of one adult and one child between the ages of 5 and 15. The tournament will start at 11am and includes 36 holes of golf for just fifteen dollars.

Trophies will be given to the top three scoring teams. Registration is taking place now through April twelfth and will be limited to the first twelve teams to register your team. Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt that is the motto of our Special Olympic athletes and those brave athletes will be competing in our Special Olympics spring games on May.

Second, the event will take place at TC roberson high school, with opening ceremonies, beginning at nine twenty, with a parade of athletes and lighting from the Olympic torch Special Olympic athletes come from all over Buncombe County and represent Buncombe County and astral city schools, group homes and independent athletes. That's over 400 athletes who will compete in track and field. Events such as softball, throw relay races, 50 and 100 meter runs the Special Olympics Committee encourages everyone to come by and cheer for these brave athletes.

Do you have questions about your health, but not a regular doctor to ask will then come and walk with a doctor beginning in april buncombe, county parks, greenways and recreation services will host an event where you can come and walk with the doctor from a heck in asheville and get answers to all your health questions. The first event will take place at owen park in swannanoa saturday april, sixth, from nine to 1030 a.m. if you miss this one. There will be another walk with the doc at carbon soccer fields in weaverville on saturday june. First.

The Charles de Owen Park has a wide range of fun activities and is the perfect place for the entire family to come out and play you can practice your swing or play catch on their baseball fields, play a game of basketball and their new blacktop courts? Take a relaxing, walk or even ride your bike or walk your dog on the figure-eight walking trail that measures almost a mile.

You don't forget your fishing gear, Owen parks, Lake has a handicap accessible fishing pier and the hatchery supported. Swannanoa River is just off the main trail. It's the perfect spot to sit and relax to the calming sounds of the Swannanoa so come on out and get your feet wet.

Did you know the charles d owen park is a registered NC birding trail and is home to many beautiful species of birds always be on the lookout, because today may be your lucky day to spot a red-tailed hawk red-headed woodpecker cooing morning doves or our majestic state bird. The Cardinal Owen park is also equipped with a rentable covered picnic pavilion with fireplaces for birthday parties or company retreats.

Welcome back now, it's time to hear what's happening in Black Mountain, here's Cindy Kirkland with black mountain recreation and parks, to tell us about their upcoming programs and events. Hi.

I'm Cindy Kirkland with black mountain recreation and parks and I'm here to share with you some of the exciting events that we have coming up for the months of April and May. First up is a bike ride on Friday April, the 5th will be going down to Travellers, Rest, South Carolina and doing a 20 mile bike ride.

The bike ride itself is pretty easy, but you must be comfortable on a bike and you can bring your own bike or you can rent one will be leaving here at nine thirty in the morning and returning about five, the cost is eighteen dollars. So, if you'd like to participate, please give us a call and we'll be happy to share all the details with you join us I'm April, the 20th here at Lake tomahawk for a walk, called pause for kids.

It's to bring awareness about the protection of children and animals, there will be adults and children's and lots of dogs so come join. Us and there'll be pinwheels and blue ribbons and face painting and mcgruff the crime. Fighting dog, so it'll be a fun day for everyone. So we hope you can come on out on April the 20th on April, the 27th, the Department of Recreation and Parks invites you to join them for their eco flea market and recycling event in honor of Earth Day.

It will be held at the suntrust parking lot in downtown Black Mountain, and so it's a great time to clean out your closets and addicts and garages and sell all that stuff and make a little bit of money and help out the earth to it will be held from eight a.m. to 11am. You can rent a booth for ten dollars and two of them for 15, so come on out, bring all your trash that maybe somebody else's treasure.

Also you can bring your styrofoam peanuts and bubble, wrap and dead batteries and use technology and recycle them for a worthy cause. So we hope you'll join us on April the 27th on may the 10th spend the day with this canoeing down the beautiful french broad river. You must be able to swim and be comfortable on the water. Please join us at Lake tomahawk at nine o'clock in the morning, and fee is fourteen dollars. Lakeview center will be co-sponsoring the Senior Games again this year.

Opening ceremonies will take place on May the 28 at the Reuter Center at UNCA. Please visit their website for more information. We hope you can come out and support our seniors I'd like to share with you a little bit about the ongoing activities we have here at the center.

Every Tuesday we take a hike at starting at ten, am just meet here at the center will load up the van and go to different spots around the area, sometimes they're nice and easy, and sometimes they're a little bit more strenuous but check out our website or our monthly newsletter, or give us a shout and join us for our hikes and beautiful state of North Carolina. We also have a lot of exercise activities going on Monday, Wednesday Friday. We have both low and high impact aerobics.

We have a gentle yoga class, we have chair exercise and chair yoga. We also offer chi gong and we have several games that you can participate in Canasta group. Mahjong duplicate bridge square dancing, sing-alongs with Maggie at the lake, so there's something for everybody. So please give us a shout and come check us out. We'd love to see you here.
