Buncombe Life is an informative monthly television program series produced by Buncombe County Television (BCTV). Each episode shares insight into the ever changing face of Buncombe County. We take great pride in supplying our citizens with the most recent and up to date information within our county and the departments we represent.
In this episode, Kathy Hughes takes a tour of the new location for Register of Deeds which is now located at 35 Woodfin Street. Register of Deeds, Drew Reisinger, describes the new facility as a 'green' building. Kathy also talks with Wanda Anderson with Department of Health's BCCCP (Breast & Cervical Cancer Control Program) and the Wise Woman Program. Wanda explains that all women ages 40 -- 64 should have yearly checkups. BCCCP offers free or low cost breast exams, pap smears, mammograms, blood pressure & cholesterol screenings and health counseling and education. and
they
have
now
moved
out
of
the
courthouse.

has
retired,

has
retired,
and
we
have
an

I'm
going
to.

of

we'll

their

we

know

our
staff
couldn't
be
happier
about
them.
We
hated
moving
out
of
the
old
courthouse
because
we
off
the
wall,
a
history
moving
out
of
course
policy,
but
moving
here,
we've
got
fantastic
lighting,
we've
got
clean,
healthy
environment
and
she
healthy
air
and
that's
very
exciting
and
what
productivity
has
gone
up.

we
couldn't
be
happier
about
the
new

stopped

full

It's
been
very
exciting,
there's
some
very
good
opportunities
for
us
to
update
the
technology
front
in
this
office.

we've
been
working
very
closely
with
our
IT
department.

done
fantastic
things
have
been
very
easy
to
work
with,
and
so
with
that
we've
had
new
website
updates.
We've
been
able
to
work
with
a
GIS
Department
and
the
tax
department
to
make
it
easier
for
people
to
find
the
information
that
they
need
about
the
deeds
and
the
plats
to
the
houses
that
they
are.

our
poise
as
they
work

it's
a
very
healthy
environment,

building.

excited
about

we've
got
these
lights.

with
the

got
sustainable
carpet.

got

vital
records
department

kindergarten,

come
here
and
get
a
certified
birth

get
their
marriage
licenses.

those
things

natural

Those
are
the
energy
efficient
lighting
that
we
have
in
in
the
goal
when
this
building
with
being
developed
was

we
wanted
to
make
sure
that
there
could
be
more
natural
light,
so
it
didn't
have
as
much
energy.

staff
loves
it
like.
They
were
very
nervous
about
leaving
the
courthouse
that
has
all
this
history
yeah.

can't

what

goal
in
this
building
was
was
to
make
it
a
green
building.

a

can
literally
just
cut

and
it's
not
going
to
have
strings
running
across

health

definitely
improved.

they
still
didn't

in
a

one

drawings

of
what
they
said
was
a
plant
that
was
here
and
that
he
did
it
here.
Well
now
there
comes,
it
could
be
truth
to
it,
and
we've
got
tell
us
what
we've
got
here,
laying
on
the
table

set

handful

we
believe,

free
cholesterol,

and
diabetic.
They
get
a
hemoglobin

we

pressure
checks.

happens,
then,
is
when
we
do
that
when
the
clinician
does
the
breast
exam,
then
we
order
a
mammograms
for
the
ladies-
and
we
do
this
here
in
Buncombe
County
with
the
digital
mammography,
which
is
very
quick,
not
painful
life.
Everybody
hears-
and
this
is
what
scares
the
ladies
off
from
getting
their
mammogram,
so
it
hurts
well,
it's
a
little
pressure
and
that's
it.
I
can
testify.
It's.

What
we
do
and
there's
different
types
of
mammograms,
so
the
clinician
orders
the
mammogram
according
to
what
they
feel
if
they
don't
feel
anything,
it's
a
screening
mammogram
if
they
feel
something
they
order.
A
diagnostic
mammogram
and
this
isn't
a
more
in-depth
mammogram.
So
then
the
ladies
go
to
their
mammogram
uh-huh,
and
we
do
that
in
Asheville
imaging
and
then
they
send
us
the
results
here.
So
now,
if
the
latest
they
find
something
in
the
mammogram
and
the
ladies
do
get
diagnosed
breast
cancer.

We
have
a
very,
very,
very
special
Medicaid
that
we
put
our
ladies
on
a
pace
for
other
treatment
up
to
breast
reconstruction.
It's
an
all,
inclusive
Medicaid,
so
you're
not
just
stuck
to
using
that
Medicaid.
Just
for
your
breasts,
you
can
go
and
get
your
eyes
examined.
You
get
your
teeth
worked
on.
You
can
use
it
for
other
doctor
expenses
and
generally
for
the
breasts
they're
on
it
for
a
year.
So
you
have
a
whole
year
of
a
good
Medicaid
to
get
yourself
fixed
with
your
breast
cancer
and
to
get
your
other
medical
needs
taken.

the
folks

home
to
hear
that,
because
I
think
there
is
a
misconception
that
well
I
don't
want
to
go
there
and
get
checked
out,
because
if
I
do
get
checked
out
and
there's
something
wrong,
then
what
am
I
going
to

issues,
I,
don't
have
no
money,
I
can't
get
you
know,
I,
don't
want
to
I've
got
to
take
care
of
that
have
no
way.
What
you're
saying
is.

worry
about

well
and
they
find

we
have
to
put
ourselves

notch
or

to
get

health
care
taken

of,

that's

we're

want
every
lady

Buncombe
County
that's
eligible

this
program
to
come

our
program.

not

anybody
away.

come
to
ladies
night
out
when
they
entered
the
building
at

that's
where
we
do.
Ladies
night
out,
they
have
they're
greeted
by
someone
at
the
front
door
they're,
given
a
pink
carnation
when,
ladies
your
head
of
the
flower,
they
get
a
flower,
every
lady
gets
a
pink
carnation.
The
ladies
are
treated
like
Queens
from
the
time
they
walk
in
the
door
and
I
just
limit
it
until
they
walk
back
out
the
door
to
go
home.

they're
told
that
they
need
to
get
on
the
elevator.
They
go
upstairs.
There's
someone
to
greet
them
when
they
get
off
the
elevator
upstairs
she
goes
into
their
next
station.
At
the
next
station
they're,
given
a
pretty
pink
bag
with
all
kinds
of
helpful
information,
they
get
the
stuff,
everybody
loves,
fre
step,
then
they're
taken
inside,
and
we
have
volunteers
and
they're
helping
the
ladies
fill
out
their
paperwork.
We
have
nurses
coming
over
after
working
all
day,
long
at
mission
and
st.

volunteering,
their
time
that
one
night
a
month
to
help
us
with
the
ladies
of
buncombe
county
they're,
taking
their
blood
pressure,
they
do
their
height
their
weight,
their
giving
education
from
a
book.
That's
in
that
pink
bag
that
they're
given,
which
is
a
lot
of
good
information,
they're,
giving
diet
and
exercise
and
all
kinds
of
education
from
that
book
from
a
nurse
here
again
we're
using
in
our
system.

another
lady
standing
outside
the
education
room
that
we
can't
bring
in
the
ladies
back
to
the
back,
where
we're
at
when
we're
doing
the
blood
work,
the
cholesterol,
glucose
or
hemoglobin

getting

we
have
more
volunteers
that
are
labeling
tears
that
takes
them
downstairs
to
asheville
imaging
where
they're
handed
off
to
the
next
set
of
volunteers,
where
we
have
a
nice
table
set
up
with
a
big
fruit,
tray
vegetable
tray,
some
chocolate
and
fruit
punch,
hey!
No,
this
is
a
deal.

after
work,
you've
got
to
tell
me
the
story,
though,
that
of
the
lady,
because
you
just
told
me
I
said
we
know

We
try
to
start
at
five
o'clock,

we're
out
by
nine
and
that's

them

folks

get
in
and
get
out.

not

it

her
mammogram

back
and
she's
breast
cancer
she's
father
she's
positive.
So
if
we
had
put
her
off
until
May,
that
would
have
been
another
month

growing
in
her
breast.
But
we
got
her
in
there
got
that
done.
We
had
her
in
here,
I
think
then,
into
the
next
week
we
had
her
started
on
the
beset
Medicaid
she's
already
had
her
first
treatment,
so
she's
good
to
go,
I
mean
in
Sao
Paulo.

with
breast
cancer.

treatment

and
believe
it

not.

one

and
but
she
doesn't
have
insurance
because
where
she
works,
they
do
not
offer
insurance
and
I've
taught
me
more
more
and
it's
happening
more
and
more
because
insurance
is
just
so
high.
So
she
is
in
the
process
of
being
treated
now
and
we're
just
going
to
let
you
all
listen
to
her
story

she
will
tell
you
her
experience
of
being
in
our
program.

years
ago
a
friend
of
mine
told
me
about
the
big
caps
program,
the
ladies
night
out
program,
I
work
for
an
employer
that
does
not
offer
insurance.
So
I
made
the
call
thank
god.
In
january
I
went
for
my
annual
physical,
my
pap
smear
and
my
mammogram
and
sweet
Wanda.

So
in
February,
I
went
for
my
mammogram
for
the
second
one
and
had
to
have
my
biopsy,
and
it
came
back
that
it
was
cancer
and
it
was
a
her
to
diagnosis,
which
is
the
fastest
moving
fastest
growing
cancer
in
the
breast
tissue.
From
what
I
understand
so
from
that
point
forward,
wonder
was
on
the
phone
and
she
was
making
phone
calls.
She
called
me
into
her
office
and
got
me
set
up
for
my
Medicaid
filled
out
all
the
paperwork
and
everything
for
me.

Then
I
would
have
died
because
I
never
would
have
had
these
tests
on
I
never
would
have
known
about
the
cancer
and
it
would
have
been
spread
rapidly
through
my
body
before
I
knew
anything
about
it.
So
I'm
very
happy
to
say
that
if
it
hadn't
been
for
the
be
caps
was
on
my
program,
I
would
be
dead.
I'm.
Sure
of
that.
