Description
The Buncombe County Sheriff's Office Detention Prevention Program and the Arrive Alive Program of UNITE International recently toured high schools throughout Buncombe County. They were all-day events that gave students real-life experiences of drunk and distracted driving with a DUI/DWI simulator, and a mobile jail cell to show its consequences.
Partnership for Substance Free Youth in Buncombe County is a coalition of schools, businesses, non-profits and government agencies in the Asheville area committed to keeping children in Asheville and Buncombe County away from drugs and alcohol. B
We're
presenting
one
our
detention,
prevention
programs
and
this
program.
What
it's
all
about
is
that
we're
encouraging
common
sense
and
good
judgment
among
our
youth.
Some
of
the
things
that
we
do
in
detention
prevention
is
that
we
talk
about
bullying,
we
talk
about
texting
and
driving.
We
talk
about
the
driving
while
impaired
and
if
you
make
the
wrong
decisions,
what
can
happen
to
you?
C
First,
a
lot
of
the
kids
that
come
through
our
trailer
being
that
they've
never
actually
witnessed
inside
of
a
jail
cell.
Some
of
them
all
firsthand
thinks
that
it's
pretty
cool,
but
you
know
our
job
is
to
show
them
that
it's
nothing
glamorous
about
being
in
jail
whatsoever.
So
we
we
really
drive
home
the
point
that
you
lose
your
privacy.
You
lose
the
things
that
you're
more
comfortable
with
with
at
home.
We.
E
C
Of
them
immediately
go
from,
it
was
cool
to
basically
saying
that
this
is
not
something
that
I
would
want
to
do,
which
is
the
whole
purpose
of
this
program
is
to
D
glamorize
going
to
jail,
whether
it
was
a
friend
that
they've
had
they
said
it
wasn't
that
bad.
We
want
to
show
them
that
it
is
exactly
that
it
is
that
bad,
that
this
is
not
a
place
that
you
want
to
spend
any
of
my
retirement.
If.
B
You
hang
around
positive
people.
You'll
have
a
positive
outcome.
If
you
hang
around
negative
people,
most
likely
you'll
have
a
negative
outcome
and
we're
finding
more
and
more
that's.
What's
going
on
the
other
thing
that
we
encourage
kids
is
to
have
those
right.
Now
we
tell
the
kids
that
you're
in
the
most
important
days
of
your
life
when
it
comes
to
decision
making,
you
are
making
big
decisions,
whether
you
want
to
accept
it
or
not,
and
we
try
to
get
them
to
have
goals.
The.
A
The
rival
eye
program
contacted
the
sheriff's
office
for
potential
sponsorship
and
we
looked
over
the
program
and
and
found
it
if
fell
in
line
with
our
values
and
and
our
mission
as
an
organization
arrive
alive,
is
a
program
sponsored
by
unite
international,
that
tours
high
schools
and
colleges
across
the
country
to
encourage
kids
and
young
adults
to
practice
safe
driving
practices
not
to
drive
under
the
influence
of
alcohol
and
drugs
and
not
to
practice
distracted
driving.
We.
F
Simulate
what
it
feels
like
to
be
under
the
influence
of
alcohol,
while
you're
driving
you
drive
the
car,
we
set
up
sensors
to
the
car,
you
drive
it
like.
You
drive
a
regular
car,
except
we
add
drinks
to
the
simulation,
which
slows
your
reaction
time
when
you're
steering
you're
braking
and
your
guess
just
like,
as
if
you
were
drinking
and
driving.
It
also
messes
with
your
peripheral
vision
and
your
hand-eye
coordination.
F
G
H
F
Studies
have
showed
that
your
reaction
time
is
actually
a
lot
slower
when
you're
texting
compared
to
drinking,
and
the
reason
for
that
is.
Is
it
for
every
letter
that
you
text,
while
you're
driving
down
the
road?
It's
the
equivalent
taking
your
eyes
off
the
road
for
3
to
4
seconds,
if
you're
doing
50
miles
an
hour,
you're
going
the
length
of
a
football
field
completely
blindfolded,
while
you're
texting
for.
