Now that the holiday season is over, it's time to think about what to do with your Christmas tree. If you live in the city of Asheville, you can use the curbside pickup during the regular brush pick up times. However if you live in Buncombe County, the Landfill is a great resource to recycle your tree for free! Simply remove all decorations and tinsel and drop it off at the mulch pile.

Speaking of which, if you want to purchase mulch at the landfill, they will have a fresh supply in January from all the tree recycling. It's only $10 for a scoop that fits the bed of a large pickup truck. Or you can scoop it in your truck for free! The only requirements are that you're a Buncombe County resident, and that you have a tarp to cover the mulch for transportation.

Well, I hope you all had a great holiday season, but now that the holiday season is over, you're probably wondering what to do with your Christmas tree. Well, if you live in the city limits, you can always have it picked up by regular curbside service. But if you don't we're here at the landfill to tell you what you can do with it and we're joined by christie smith, the landfill bioreactor manager. So thank you for joining.

For having me so Christie, how do people recycle their trees here at Platteville? Well,.

B

Bring your trees up to the landfill you check in at the scale house, we're here monday through friday, eight to 430 saturday, eight to 12 30 come up to the scale house, tell them what you've got and if it's just the tree from your house, make sure you remove all the ornaments, the tinsel the lights, all that stuff. It just needs to be one clean, Christmas tree and they'll direct you up to this mulch pile it'll be free. If it's like a commercial load of Christmas trees is going to be twenty dollars per ton.

But if you bring it from your house, it's free and you can just come on and dump it off in this pile right behind me.

So what happens if some ornaments letting I'm a big tinsel user so I have a lot of tinsel and there might be a few strands left or anything? What's what do you do? If there's anything you just tell them to take it back.

Probably you know we really try.

A

And make sure you clean the trees very well, you might bring don't.

Use too much tinsel where.

A

You can't clean it off. Okay, but.

B

When we grind this stuff up, it goes into mulch, which then ends up in your yard, so tinsel won't break down. So we really want it to be a clean product, because the mulch does go back out to the public after we grind the the material up. Okay,.

And aside from the landfill, where there are other places that the county accepts recycle trees, do they accept them at the transverse.

B

No, no, no! No industries. huh There are private businesses throughout the county. That'll take the Christmas trees. You can call a lot of the multi ards around here, like Riverside stumped up I, think they take them for free from individuals and then they charge on a commercial load sort of like we do, I'm not sure what their fees are, but you can take them to the private multi-arts throughout the county, and then city of asheville said that they will accept christmas trees from city residents on their normal brush day. Pickup.

Whenever that is, you can call the city back.

That's all curbside stuff, so.

You live in the city, you.

Don't have anything to worry.

If you live outside, what do you find some people do with the trees if they don't bring them here? Some.

People, you know probably kind of up and use them for firewood or they composting themselves they're in their yards and I know. There's some people that participate in progress, energies like Julian cat fish, habitat fish habit. I don't think it's catfish, but there's a fish habitat. They I, don't know how it works, but they take trees to them and they end up putting them in the lake for fish habitat. So that's another program, so.

You bring the Christmas tree here and we have a little bit of pile of evergreens here with the woodpile. This is about where it goes in the mulch pile section. So once it's turned into mulch, you can buy it obviously like how much does it cost? What are the prerequisites to buying it? Yeah.

You have to be a Buncombe County resident and then you come to the landfill during the operating hours. I told you about and you can get the mulch allotted for you on your truck. We use a big loader and we dump it in there for you and that's ten dollars per scoop and that'll feel any normal size, pickup truck bed of mulch. Now you can scoop at yourself for free. You know you don't have to pay for it. If.

You know so, basically, you can just come here with a pickup truck and fill it up with mulch yourself and it's all free right.

Great it'll take a while, but you know, if you don't want to pay for it, then you can do that and we do require you to have a tarp so make sure you bring a tart when your ropes and all that, so you can secure that mulch. So we're not sending mulch down the roads on your way home, that's smart and then the key to our mulch is that all this wood behind us is clean, untreated, unpainted, wood, that's the the main prereqs it so that when we grind it up, it is good clean.

You know when you come to the landfill, to pick up mulch that it's going to be good quality. It's not gonna have any like painter anything.

In else absolutely or tensile, no.
