Joining us today is Aaron Griffin, Chairman of the African American Heritage Commission. Today we would like to get the community acquainted with the African American Heritage Commission. What is its mission, who is a part of the commission, and how community can collaborate.
The City-County African American Heritage Commission consists of nine members. Three of those members are appointed by the Asheville City Council, three are appointed by the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners, and three are appointed by the six appointed members. The Commission is to advise the City Council and County Commissioners about the preservation, interpretation, and promotion of African American arts, history, and culture.

commission

with

commission

a
real

be

and

speak
on
such
a
very
important
commission.

all
of
them
are
important,
but
you
know
I'm
a
part
of
it.
So
you

I'm
really
excited
about
being
a
part
of
the
commission
and
being
able
to
serve
my
community
all.

Asheville
High
class
of
98
over
here,
but
thank

much

giving
back
and
you
are
born
and
raised
here
in
Asheville
and
that
is
so
unique
because
a
lot
of
folks
say
well.
I've
been
here
25
years,
so
I'm
I'm
now
a
native.
But
you
actually
your
feet
were
planted
here,
and
this
is
where
you
grew
all.

like
that,
but
now
it's
I
mean
the
city
has
really
evolved.

know,
and
so
I
at
that
point
you

at
first
like
most
people
I
was
like
oh
it's
so
different,
but
I
had
to
get
out
and
explore.

what
downtown
is
like.
You
know,
see
what's
going
on
and
I.
Finally,
you
know
I
was
welcome.
Welcome
to
this
new
Asheville.
You
know
yeah.

The
African-American
Heritage
commission,
well,
it
was
created
by
the
state
in
08
and
is
to
preserve
and
protect
arts
and
culture,
and
our
commission
was
created
in
2014..
You
know
the
actual
City
Council
in
the
book.
County
Board
of
commission
decide.
This
is
something
that
we
need.
So
it's
you
know
it's
what
we're
nine
years
in
it's
fairly
new,
so
you
know,
within
the
wake
of
you
know
the
George
Floyd
and
all
the
things
that's
been
happening
recently.
We
sort
of
began
to
shift.

know
if
I
it
was
something
I
decided,
it
was
just
I,
guess
the
timing
of
the
matter.
You
know
it
was
some
things
you
know
people
shifting
out
and
you
know
I
was
one
of
the
ones
who
you

just
stepped
up,
not
really
knowing
much
about
being
a
chair
or
even
being
a
part
of
any
kind
of
commission.

it's
you

three
appointed
by
a
council,
three
appointed
by
the
Obama
County
Board
of
commissions
and
three
appointed
by
six
members
of
our
commission.
Okay,
so
right
now
we
currently
filled
all
the
positions.
So
you
know-
and
this
is
the
first-
you
know
it's
a
lot
of
people
becoming
more
active,
so
I'm
really
looking
forward
to
this
new
year,
because
we
finally
have
you
know
the
the
members
that
we
need.
It's
a
very
talented.
You
know
group
of.

Different
backgrounds
and
so
much
knowledge
and
a
lot
of
people
on
our
commission
are
extremely
involved
in
the
community.
So
it's
a
lot
of
information.
That's
coming
now
a
lot
of
different.

ideas
and
suggestions
and
I'm
just
excited
about
it.
You
know
where
we
are
now.
You
know,
because
it
took
us
a
minute
to
get
here,
but
we're
here.

come

passion
of
just
want
to
be
a
part
of
something
you
know
because
I
at
that
time
in
2019,
I
guess
yeah

when
I
started
I
didn't
know

I

city's
website,
yeah
and
then
I
said.
I
said
what
we
have
that
yeah
you.

you

kinds

boards

commissions
and
things

you

get
involved
with
and
the
great
thing
about
now
the
city
and
the
county
are
encouraging
more
people
to
get
involved

engaged

all
these
processes
and
things
that's
happening
across.

our
County,
so
you
know
it's
the
information.

are

you

it

a

comment

you
can

all

information
sharing,

mentioned

they
were
virtual
meetings,
so
just

it
from
the
company

also
offers

that
you

that's
another

public
input
has
really
just
kind
of
changed.

engagement
process.

we
have
a
City
liaison
and
the
county
liaison
and
they
show
up
and
they
give
us
information
about.
What's
going
on
in
the
city
and
what's
going
on
in
the
the
county,
and
it's
it's
great
to
see,

only

community,
you
know
plus
commissions
and
the
city
and
the
county,
all
in
one
setting.

it's
not
that,
and
you

just
see
a
Vibrant
Community
African-American
community
and
we
think
about
hair
and
touching
all
of
those
things
and
we
think
about
how
Asheville
was
going
through
all
these
different
processes.
What
reparations
and
things
of
that
nature?
How
are
you
all
involved
in
those
areas?
Are
you
all
able
to
attend
those
meetings
and-
and
are
you
able
to
give
and
do
you
all,
go
and
give
input
or
how
is
that
going?

that's

just
I
listen
and
I
watched
it.
That
keeps
me
up.
You
know
about
what's
going
on
with
the
reparations,
the
reparations
commission
so
but
it's
the
environment
that
piece

Yes,
we
listen
and
we
see
what's
going
on
and
also
you
know,
we
have
a
responsibility
to
be
able
to
give
Sound
Advice
to
the
city
and
county.
You
know.
So
that's
a
really
big.
It's
a
really
big
task.

Community

Asheville,
all
over

I

really

love
my

city,
you

I

I
it
used
to
be
like
where
we
would

Ashfield
great

better
or
something
and
I
always
say
we
want
to-
and
this
is
a
part
of
the
the
big
part
of
the
reason
why
you
know
I'm
serving
on
this
Commission,
because
I
want
to
see
all
of
Asheville
every
crack.

Well,
it's
a
couple
of
them.
One
of
them
was,
you
know,
to
be
able
to
attend
the
meetings
with
the
the
city
boards
and
commission
restructuring.
You
know
we
were
able
to
give
some
input
there
and
hopefully
there
we
make
some
difference
there.
You
know-
and
you
know
we
also
get-
was
involved
with
the
Walton
Street
Park
I'm
really
really
really
truly
truly
happy
about
that
one
because
I,
you
know
that's
where
I
the
water
used
to
be
cold,
yeah.

And
even
when
I
was
even
when
I
was
maybe
about
six
or
seven
people
who
lived
in
that
area,
they
were
doing
community
cleanups.
So
this
stuff
is
not
new.
I
was
sort
of
you
know
with
my
parents.
That's
the
other
thing.
You
know
they
it's
just
like.
We
have
Devonte
here.
You
know
we
they
sort
of
brought
bring
us
along,
and
you
know
you
never
know.
You
know
I,
never
thought
that
you
know
this
is
what
I
would
be
interested
in
or
doing
you
know,
but.

Me
you
know
yeah
and
it's
great
to
preserve
those
places,
even
though
it's
connected
to
a
past
of
us
include
exclusion,
but
it's
very
near
and
dear
to
those
people.
We
made
the
best
out
of
those
situations
so
to
hear
that
the
Wall
Street
pool
is
a
on
that
registry
list
and
we'll
be
preserved.
That's
a
great
part
of
Asheville's
history
that
is.

Lee
and
what
we
lost
here
so
those
things
we
have
today
is
great
and
that's
one
of
the
key
things
with
the
Heritage
commission
is
really
to
identify
those
places
galvanized
around
really
preserving
that.
So,
as
you
mentioned
the
young
gentleman,
we
have
here
today,
even
Donovan
that
it's
a
history
you
connected
to
this
past
and
what
it
can
be,
and
it's.

Community
centers
all
those
places,
and
so
please
stop
and
get
one.
It
is
amazing
the
information
that
is
there
and-
and
it
also
highlights
James
Vester
Miller,
who
was
born
in
1860.
He
was
born
into
slavery
and
he
came
to
Asheville
after
the
Civil
War
and
he
was
able
to
make
his
own
business
and
if
you
look
around
a
lot
of
these
buildings
in
Asheville,
have
his
marking
on
it
because
he
designed
and
built
them.
So
that's
absolutely
amazing.

I,
like
I
love
what
you
just
said,
because
it
leads
into
what
we're
planning
you
know
and
we're
planning
we're
currently
in
the
stage
of
planning
a
a
summit
where
we're
getting
together
a
lot
of
local
leaders,
some
of
them
that
you
know
and
some
of
them
you
may
not
know
because
there's
a
lot
of
people,
that's
working
in
the
community.
That's
not
you
know,
standing
out
front
to
you
know,
recognize
them
and
you
know
show
them.

because
a
lot
of
people
are
doing
work
and
we
just
don't
know
everybody
so
our
ideas
to
to
bring
these
different
groups
of
people
together.
You
know
different
organizations,
South
Side,
East
End.
You
know
Stumptown,
just
bringing
all
these
Community
get
together
and
and
and
to
recognize
some
of
these
people.
That's
doing
so
much
great
work
because
now,
more
than
ever
you
know
these
organizations
are
they're
forming
and
they're
doing
some
great
great
great
work.
So
that's
what
we're
looking
forward
to
in
the
future.

really
highlighting
the
African-American
Heritage
commission.

there
is
a
a
commission,
that's
very
intentional
and
really
uplifting.
The
voice
and
I
just
highlight
that
that
mission
and
vision
that
the
commission
is
to
advise
the
city,
council
and
County
Commissioners
about
preservation,
interpretation
and
promotion
of
African-American
arts,
history
and
culture,
and
so
again
for
the
listeners
out
there.
We
really
want
to
just
Elevate
what
this
commission
is
doing.
We
know
going
forward
we're
going
to
try
to
increase
the
presence.
