From YouTube: Burbank Fire Department Change of Command Ceremony 2023
Description
Retirement Celebration of Fire Chief Eric Garcia & Change of Command Ceremony for Fire Chief Danny Alvarez - September 1, 2023
A
A
Today
we
celebrate
the
30-year
career
of
Chief
Garcia
in
honor,
the
tradition
of
transferring
command
of
the
Burbank
Fire
Department
to
the
capable
hands
of
Chief
Alvarez.
The
change
of
command
ceremony
is
where
the
outgoing
commanders
symbolically
relinquishes
command
and
authority
and
passes
it
on
to
the
incoming
Commander.
A
B
Yeah
good
morning,
as
Chief
said,
my
name
is
firefighter
Garrett
Miller
and
it
is
an
absolute
honor
to
deliver
our
invocation
over
our
Ceremony
this
morning.
The
fire
chief
is
an
important
job.
Fire
chief
is
responsible
for
not
only
managing
a
multi-million
dollar
budget,
but
for
overall
making
decisions
that
affect
the
health,
the
well-being
and
the
safety
of
our
citizens
of
our
community,
the
health,
the
well-being
and
the
safety
of
the
men
and
women
that
they
lead
their
decisions,
directly
impact
how
we
treat
people
and
how
safely
we
go
home
to
our
families.
B
So,
for
this
reason
we
invite
the
Lord
to
join
us
to
pray
over
our
firefighters
and
to
pray
over
our
fire
chief
for
those
of
you
that
would
like
to
join
me.
I
invite
you
to
Bow
your
heads
in
prayer,
dear
Lord,
we
invite
you
to
our
ceremony
today.
We
pray
for
your
presence
over
our
changing
of
command
or
the
Burbank
fire
department.
We
thank
you
first
and
foremost
for
chief
Eric
Garcia.
B
B
B
We
deeply
thank
you
that
you
brought
him
home
to
us
at
the
Burbank
Fire
Department.
Thank
you
that
you
brought
us
someone
that
we
know
that
we
care
for
that.
We
trust
and
as
firefighters
we
are
honored
to
serve
proudly
Underneath
Him.
We
pray
that
you
guide
his
decisions
with
wisdom
with
patience
and
with
Integrity
Lord.
B
B
We
thank
you
for
families,
friends,
a
community,
City
management
and
a
city
council
that
supports
us
and
believes
in
our
cause
and
believes
in
what
we
do.
We
thank
you
for
your
time
here
today.
Lord
we
thank
you
for
this
incredible
day.
We
pray
that
it
may
be
a
positive,
an
incredible
moment
in
the
history
of
the
Burbank
Fire
Department.
In
your
name,
we
pray,
amen.
A
C
A
Thank
you,
Chief
Burke.
We
have
several
introductions,
so
if
we
can
hold
our
Applause
to
the
end,
we
have
mayor
Constantine
Anthony
vice
mayor
Schultz,
city
manager,
Justin
Hess.
We
have
council
members,
Nikki,
Perez,
Tamila,
tagahashi,
multiple
members
of
our
city,
executive
team,
our
Burbank
fire
department,
Command
Staff,
the
brave
men
and
women
of
the
Burbank
Fire
Department,
along
with
some
awesome
retirees
that
came
out
today.
A
We
have
our
entire
fire
prevention
beer,
along
with
all
of
our
support
staff.
We
have
several
dignitaries.
We
have
representatives
from
Senator
portentino's
office,
State,
Center,
Caroline,
mengevar
and
L.A
County
Supervisor
Catherine
Barger
we'd,
like
to
welcome
retired
fire
chief
Burbank
fire
chief
Michael
Davis.
A
We
have
so
many
Fire
Chiefs
and
Command
Staff
from
our
neighbors
and
partners.
We
have,
of
course
Burbank
PD
Glendale
Fire
Department
Pasadena
fire
department,
Montebello
Fire
Department,
San,
Gabriel,
Fire
Department
Long
Beach
Fire
Department,
L.A
County,
fire
department
and
chief
Crowley
just
arrived
from
LA
City
Fire
Department.
We
also
have
representatives
from
our
Burbank
Police
Department
and
the
Hollywood
Burbank
Airport
Police
Department.
Thank
you
all
for
being
here.
Today.
D
E
Good
morning,
everyone,
it
is
a
pleasure
to
be
amongst
you
all
on
behalf
of
Senator
portentino
Senator
portentino
is
in
Sacramento
today,
but
wishes.
He
could
be
here
in
person
to
congratulate
you,
Chief
Garcia,
on
your
retirement
and
to
congratulate
you,
Chief
Alvarez,
on
being
appointed
the
fire
chief
of
the
Burbank
Fire
Department
chief
Garcia.
E
Thank
you
for
your
30
years
of
outstanding
service
to
the
City
of
Burbank,
on
behalf
of
Senator
portentino
I'd
like
to
present
you
with
this
certificate
of
Senate
recognition,
your
leadership
and
unwavering
dedication
to
protecting
the
safety
and
well-being
of
our
community
have
been
a
continual
inspiration
to
all
those
who
have
worked
alongside
you.
Congratulations
and
best
wishes
on
a
happy
retirement.
D
F
First
of
all,
I
would
like
to
say
that,
of
course,
you
do
have
two
senators
in
this
district
and
we
are
very,
very
proud
and
very,
very
lucky
to
be
representing
such
an
extraordinary
city,
as
the
City
of
Burbank
I
will
admit
that
arda's
frame
was
quite
beautiful
and
I
am
having
a
bit
of
frame
Envy
I
anyway.
I
hope
you
don't
mind.
Okay,
I
again,
they
are
closing
up
session
in
Sacramento.
F
They
are
working
like
like
I
would
never
want
to
work,
but
the
senator
is
very,
very
regretful
that
she
cannot
be
here
but
sends
her
very,
very
best
and
I'd
like
to
present
you
with
this
certificate
on
her
behalf
on.
Let
me
just
read:
read
a
bit
of
it
here
on
behalf
of
the
State
of
California,
the
20th
District
I,
commend
you
for
your
years
of
dedication,
commitment
to
service
of
the
city,
Burbank
and
all
its
citizens,
your
unyielding
pursuit
of
Excellence
Has
Lifted,
this
department
to
a
world-class
level
with
safety
of
everyone.
F
G
Good
morning,
everyone,
my
name,
is
Alondra
Lopez
I'm,
the
I
gotta
go
up
higher
I'm
the
senior
field
rep
for
assembly
member
Laura
Friedman,
so
unfortunately,
assemblyman
Friedman
could
not
make
it
here
today,
she's
also
in
session
it's
Appropriations
day
today.
So
today
we
know
if
bills
die
or
live,
so
it's
a
really
important
day
up
there,
but
it's
also
an
important
day
here,
and
we
just
want
to
thank
you
for
your
30
years
of
service.
G
Thank
you
for
all
the
hard
work
that
you
do
and
I
was
just
speaking
with
council
member
Takahashi
and
all
the
work
that
you
do
for
mental
health
here
as
well,
and
we're
so
excited
to
work
with
the
new
chief
chief,
Alvarez,
okay,
just
to
see
what
else
we
can
do,
but
just
thank
you
for
your
hard
work
and
then
just
I
one
time
had
to
call
9-1-1
and
we
know
how
fast
you
respond,
and
just
thank
you
for
all
the
work
that
you
all
do
here.
Every
day.
G
A
H
H
You
know
that
she
is
extremely
supportive
of
all
her
firefighters
and
First
Responders
and
police,
and
you
know
this
the
sacrifice
and
everything
the
dedication
that
you've
put
into
this
into
your
career
is
really
what
makes
Burbank
one
of
the
reasons
that
it's
such
a
great
City,
We,
Love,
Burbank
and
also
I,
just
on
behalf
of
the
supervisor.
Not
only
do
I
want
to
thank
you.
I
want
to
thank
your
family.
I
know
the
sacrifice
of
being
a
family
of
First
Responders
huge.
H
So
congratulations
to
your
family
as
well,
so
with
that
we
have
another
piece
of
art
for
you
on
behalf
of
supervisor
Barger,
in
recognition
of
dedicated
service
to
the
Affairs
of
the
community
and
for
the
civic
pride
demonstrated
by
numerous
contributions
for
the
benefit
of
all
the
residents
of
Los
Angeles
County.
Thank
you.
A
Thank
you
and
representing,
as
the
president
of
the
foothill
Fire
Chiefs
Association.
We
welcome
fire
chief
Chris
of
Laverne
Fire
Department.
A
I
Good
morning,
everybody,
my
name
is
Chris
nigg,
as
mentioned
fire
chief
of
the
La
Verne
fire
department.
Today,
I
serve
or
I
present
to
you
as
the
president
of
the
foothill
Fire
Chiefs,
which
is
the
fire
department's
all
along
the
foothill
Corridor
here
of
Northern
LA
County
I'm
joined
by
fire
chief
Steve
Wallace
of
the
San
Gabriel
Fire
Department
and
chief
Garcia.
We
wanted
to
ex.
I
We
wanted
to
extend
this
plaque
to
you
in
recognition
of
your
service
not
only
to
the
fire
service
as
a
whole,
but
also
the
foothill
Fire
Chiefs
Foothill
Fire
Chiefs
group
was
initiated
in
order
to
recognize
the
shared
commonalities
among
all
the
fire
departments
along
the
foothill
Corridor,
and
as
a
result
of
that,
much
collaboration
has
has
become
prevalent
between
our
group
and
between
our
departments
to
the
benefit
of
the
community
and
I,
couldn't
think
of
a
better
chief
officer
to
be
a
representative
of
those
collaborative
efforts.
So
thank
you
very
much
for
your
service.
I
Today,
we'll
present
this
plaque
with
deep
admiration
appreciation
for
your
29
years
of
service
to
the
Burbank
Fire
Department
in
the
foothill
Fire
Chiefs
Association,
your
positive
attitude
and
willingness
to
serve
genuine
friendship
and
betterment
of
the
fire
service
has
made
a
lasting
impact
on
all
of
us.
On
behalf
of
your
fellow
Fire
Chiefs,
we
wish
you
the
best
in
retirement
foreign.
A
Okay,
we
have
some
great
friends
of
the
Burbank
fire
department
joining
us
today
to
honor
Chief
Garcia
and
welcome
Chief
Alvarez.
We
have
a
couple
of
speakers
and
we'd
like
to
welcome
Jim,
Burrell,
retired
Fire
Chief
and
representing
the
LA
Area
Fire
Chiefs
Association.
J
Good
morning
very
special
day
today
for
two
very
special
men,
mentors.
J
And
their
families,
you
know
working
with
lavka
and
I,
represent
the
Regional
training
group
and
I
work
hand
in
hand
with
the
president
of
lavka
and
I've
had
the
privilege
to
work
side
by
side
with
Eric
two
different
terms.
J
As
president
and
you
get
to
know
him,
you
get
to
know
the
people
when
you're
working
side
by
side
with
somebody
and
Eric's
Vision.
His
leadership
has
brought
all
29
departments
in
the
LA
region
together,
like
I've,
never
seen.
J
And
it's
really
something
to
see
Eric's
prepared
for
every
situation
and
I
attribute
that
not
only
to
his
30-year
career
in
the
fire
service,
but
he's
also
a
football
coach
for
those
of
you
that
don't
know
that
and
he's
preparation
is
everything
and
I
say
that
with
the
utmost
admiration
and
respect,
he's
always
prepared
Eric's
very
thoughtful
I
mentioned
Eric
earlier
in
the
summer
that
one
of
our
grandsons
was
in
a
Little
League
All-Star
game
out
in
Tustin,
and
it
was
Saturday
morning
next
thing:
I
knew.
J
J
You
know
members
of
the
fire
service,
firefighters,
sacrifice
a
lot,
their
family
sacrifice
a
lot.
You
know
it's
the
extended
work
hours
absence
from
home
and
you
know,
then
those
stressors
upon
the
job
come
home
with
them
so
that
changes
somewhat
when
you're
a
fire
chief.
This
is
this
is
a
Bittersweet
day.
I'll
tell
you
it's
a
happy
day
and
you
miss
it
all.
In
the
same
time
and
Eric's
made
those
sacrifices.
J
He
has
these
things.
He
calls
the
2
A.M
staff
meetings
and,
unless
you're
a
fire
chief,
anybody
in
leadership
you
get
it
and
when
Eric
first
told
me
about
the
2
A.M
staff
meetings,
I
was
like
what
what
is
he
talking
about?
And
it's
when
you
wake
up
at
two
or
three
in
the
morning,
and
your
got
issues
going
through
your
head
and
you're
addressing
those
issues
and
how
you're
going
to
speak
about
it
and
lead
in
a
certain
situation
and
Eric
after
today.
I
hope
you
don't
have
any
more
2
A.M
staff
meetings.
J
Eric
loves
Burbank
fire
department,
he
loves
the
fire
service
and
proof
of
all
the
people
that
are
here
today.
That
love
is
reciprocating.
J
J
Lastly,
on
Chief
Alvarez,
when
I
first
met
him
and
every
time
he
comes
into
a
room,
the
positive
energy
and
that
smile
is
contagious.
He
smiles
coming
in
that
room
and,
like
he's,
smiling
right
now
and
it's
it's
awesome
and
we
look
forward
to
Chief
Alvarez
being
at
Burbank
being
able
to
work
with
him.
He's
been
the
second
vice
president
with
lavka
and
I'm
hoping
he
can
carry
out
his
term
as
president
next
year,
but
this
is
this
is
a
great
day.
This
is
a
great
day
for
everyone,
Chief
Alvarez,
congratulations!
J
I've
had
the
honor
today
to
represent
lavka,
which
is
the
Los
Angeles
area
Fire
Chiefs
Association.
J
We
traditionally
have
a
bugle
that
bugle
trophy
that
we
present
to
the
retired,
Fire
Chiefs
and
come
on
up
guys
and
the
bugle
signifies
tradition
in
the
fire
service.
Back
in
the
days
before
there
were
handheld
radios,
the
chief
officer
on
scene
of
an
incident
would
use
a
bugle
or
trumpet
and
Shout
Out
orders,
and
it
would
amplify
their
voice.
J
Now
we
have
radios
to
do
all
that,
but
the
bugles
also
signify
and
you'll
see
in
the
caller
of
all
these
Fire
Chiefs
up
here,
five
Bugles
and
their
insignias
on
their
collars.
That
represents
the
fire
chief,
so
Eric
with
great
admiration,
respect
and
thankfulness.
We
present
you
with
this
bugle.
A
Thank
you
bro.
That's
a
lot
of
gold
badges
in
one
spot.
Next,
please
welcome
one
of
our
closest
Partners
Chief
Chad
Augustine
from
the
Pasadena
Fire
Department.
K
Good
morning
my
name
is
Chad
Augustine.
Thank
you
all
for
being
here
today,
as
we
celebrate
Chief
Garcia's
retirement
and
welcome
back
Chief
Alvarez
as
a
background.
I
moved
to
Pasadena
two
and
a
half
years
ago
and
did
not
know
a
single
person.
Thank
you
from
day,
one
I
knew
Chief
Garcia
was
special.
He
consistently
went
out
of
his
way
to
be
a
partner
and
resource
over
the
past
few
years,
he's
become
a
mentor
and
good
friend.
K
K
K
K
As
family,
your
sacrifice
is
extremely
large.
The
amount
of
time
spent
away
from
family
for
days
at
a
time
can
take
a
toll.
Chief
Garcia
has
had
an
incredible
impact
on
the
fire
service
across
the
region,
but
I
know
he's
excited
to
be
able
to
spend
more
time
with
all
you
and
personally.
Thank
you
so
much
for
allowing
him
to
spend
time
and
better
the
fire
service
in
this
area.
K
Chief
I
wish
you
the
best
of
luck
in
retirement.
You
will
be
dearly,
missed.
I,
hope
you
get
to
spend
more
time
uninterrupted
without
having
to
answer
your
cell
phone,
while
you're
coaching
football
and
getting
to
spend
time
with
your
family.
You
can
be
proud
to
know
that
the
fire
service
is
better
because
of
your
leadership.
Congratulations.
A
L
L
It's
about
fostering
camaraderie
trust,
respect
and,
most
importantly,
leading
with
compassion,
Chief
Garcia
exemplifies
all
of
these
virtues,
making
the
Burbank
fire
department,
a
beacon
of
Pride
and
esteem,
and
one
of
the
nation's
finest
fire
departments
period
under
Chiefs
Garcia's
stewardship.
Our
fire
department
has
evolved
and
progressed
in
Leaps
and
Bounds
from
spearheading
our
response
to
covid-19
to
pioneering
our
full
transition
to
renewable
diesel.
L
However,
with
every
ending
comes
a
new
beginning,
as
we
bid
farewell
to
Chief
Garcia,
we
extend
a
warm
welcome
to
fire
chief
Danny
Alvarez,
a
seasoned
veteran
Chief
Alvarez
has
previously
devoted
25
years
to
the
Burbank
Fire
Department.
His
expertise
in
budget
personnel
management
and
policy
development
is
commendable.
L
We
have
every
bit
of
confidence
that
Chief
Garcia's,
Chief
Alvarez's
return
to
Burbank
will
Usher
in
a
new
era
of
growth
and
achievement.
This
is
where
Danny
belongs.
I
am
very
happy
to
see
him
back
home
here
in
Burbank.
Congratulations,
Chief,
Alvarez,
there's
some
irony
today
as
this
day
marks
the
anniversary
of
the
latuna
fire
six
years
ago,
where
our
fire
department
was
put
to
the
test
and
passed
with
flying
colors.
L
Both
Chief
Garcia
and
chief
Alvarez
here
at
the
time,
demonstrated
their
commitment
and
dedication,
along
with
all
the
other
firefighters
who
battled
that
fire
over
a
period
of
several
days,
our
Burbank
fire
fires
and
a
lot
of
the
other
department
firefighters
represented
here
today,
Eric
as
you
step
into
the
next
chapter
of
your
life,
know
that
you
leave
behind
a
strong
Legacy
on
behalf
of
the
City
of
Burbank
and
its
residents.
I
profoundly,
extend
our
gratitude
and
wish
you
all
the
happiness,
health
and
prosperity
in
your
future
endeavors.
Congratulations.
M
All
right,
the
half
of
the
city
staff
made
sure
I
got
my
notes
today.
So
I
could
read
this
I
stand
before
you
with
immense
pride
and
respected.
We
celebrate
Chief
Garcia's
retirement
for
almost
30
years.
Chief
Garcia
has
dedicated
his
life
to
Burbank
embodying
the
very
Spirit
of
a
public
servant.
His
commitment
to
the
fire
service
is
more
than
a
profession.
It's
a
noble,
calling
it's
a
passion,
that's
what
it
says
here
on
my
paperwork
but
I'm
gonna.
Let
you
folks
appear
behind
the
curtain
a
little
bit
today.
M
We
we
actually
don't
just
lose
one
person.
We
lose
two
there's
Chief
Garcia
that
you
all
know
the
front
facing
leader
of
the
fire
department,
but
there's
also
Eric
the
firefighter
I'm
gonna.
Tell
you
a
little
bit
about
Eric
the
firefighter.
If
you
don't
know
him,
when
you
watch
a
city
council
meeting
and
the
chief
comes
up-
and
he
has
this
presentation-
and
he
knows
what's
happening
next-
he
knows
what
the
department
is
doing
and
he's
there
to
keep
the
public
informed
and
secure
in
their
beliefs.
M
That's
that's
when
you
see
Chief
Garcia,
when
the
cameras
are
off
when
there
is
a
crisis
when
I'm
grilling
him
on
an
issue,
you
see
Eric
the
firefighter
show
up.
You
see
a
man
who's,
a
problem.
Solver,
you
see
a
man
who
sees
the
world
in
multiple
different
ways:
the
different
facets
of
an
issue
of
a
problem,
and
you
see
him
thinking.
M
M
You
may
see
Eric
the
firefighter
when
he
is.
He
does
this
wonderful
little
stutter
thing
where
he
repeats
himself,
although
he
goes
well
well,
okay,
so
so!
Well,
basically,
it's
wonderful
to
see,
because
you
see
his
mind
working,
give
him
just
a
minute
and
he
will
present
you
with
a
solution
that
you
cannot
deny
is
objectionably
the
best
option
moving
forward.
That
is
how
he
got
to
his
position
today.
M
M
What
we
saw
happen
in
this
country
three
years
ago,
we
saw
fear,
we
saw
worry.
We
saw
panic
and
Eric
the
firefighter
found
his
way
through
it,
but
on
television
we
saw
Chief
Garcia
lead
us,
we
saw
Chief
Garcia,
give
hope
and
resiliency
back
to
our
people
to
the
city
and
in
fact,
a
lot
of
other
cities
learn
from
us
and
moved
forward.
M
You
were
a
leader
not
just
here,
but
across
the
county
across
the
country
and
we
saved
lives.
You
saved
lives
without
even
putting
out
a
single
fire,
a
physical
fire.
You
put
out
a
bunch
of
metaphorical
fires,
the
work
that
you
did,
the
team
that
you
had
fundamentally
changed
our
city
for
the
better,
and
we
are
sad
to
see
you
go.
M
M
Chief
Garcia
I
just
want
to
say
Chief
Garcia.
You
got
some
big
shoes
to
fill
so
I.
Look
forward
to
working
with
you
all
right,
we'll
take
a
photo.
A
N
N
Was
funny
because
this
is
a
very
special
day
for
these
guys
in
the
days
when
they
appointed
us
Fire
Chiefs,
they
said.
Okay,
you
are
a
chief
go
act
like
one,
and
it
was
a
little
little
more
specific
than
that,
but
at
any
rate,
I
just
want
to
say
good
morning
to
you
all.
It's
my
pleasure
to
be
here
today
to
honor
and
congratulate
both
Eric
Garcia
and
Danny.
N
Alvarez
has
two
young
pups
when
I
hired
them
as
rookie
firefighters
in
the
late
1990s,
who
have
now
risen
to
be
the
top
dogs
of
today,
current
Burbank
fire
chief
Eric
Garcia
should
be
commended
for
his
almost
30
years
of
dedicated
service
to
the
Burbank,
Fire
Department
and
the
community.
It
protects
the
last
six
years,
of
course,
were
extremely
critical,
as
he
was
the
leader
of
the
organization
during
a
very
critical
period
of
pandemic
and
its
major
health
issues.
N
During
his
time
here,
Chief
Garcia
was
also
earned
the
respect
of
his
peers
in
all
the
29
jurisdictions
that
make
up
the
Los
Angeles
area,
Fire
Chiefs
Association,
as
he
was
chosen
as
the
president
of
their
body
of
Fire
Chiefs
I'm.
Still,
a
member
of
that
organization
and
chief
Garcia
is
held
in
high
regard.
N
It
is
also
my
honor
and
pleasure
to
welcome
Chief
Danny
Alvarez
back
into
the
arms
of
the
Burbank
Fire
Department.
He
was
gone
about
18
months,
but
I
understand
from
the
reports
from
Santa
Monica
that
you
accomplished
some
very
important
objectives:
critical
to
the
well-being
of
the
Santa
Monica
Fire
Department
and
the
citizens
you
served.
N
N
N
N
They
have
indeed
met
and
exceeded
the
standard
for
excellence.
Today
both
have
Justified
the
faith
that
was
placed
in
there
in
their
hands
by
a
then
young
impressionable
fire
chief.
That
would
be
me
that
now
confirms
I
made
the
right
choice,
so
in
closing,
I
would
like
to
offer
my
sincere
best
wishes
to
both
of
you
for
many
years
to
come.
As
you
travel
the
paths
you
have
each
chosen.
A
C
N
O
I'm
going
to
Echo
what
Mark
said
and
chief
Davis.
Thank
you
so
much
for
being
here
that
it
is
hallowed
time
when
he's
able
to
be
here-
and
this
is
not
going
to
be
easy
for
me-.
O
I
would
first
and
foremost
like
to
extend
my
heartfelt
thanks
for
everybody.
That's
in
attendance
here
today
has
been
stated.
This
is
truly
a
special
day
for
the
Burbank
Fire
Department
and
chief
Davis
I.
So
thank
you
for
taking
that
chance
on
me
back
on
July
16
1994,
when
my
BFD
Journey
began,
and
that
was
as
part
of
the
greatest
class
that's
ever
hit
the
BFD
and
that's
a
class
of
1994.
O
O
O
O
P
O
So,
as
I
said
at
engineer,
paramedic
was
where
I
was
going
to
where
I
was
going
to
retire
from.
O
But
I
went
screwed
that
up
every
successive
rank
from
that
point
would
help
refine
the
knowledge
and
skill
and
I
really
enjoyed
learning
the
next
position
in
our
system.
Each
of
those
opportunities
offered
me
the
means
of
broadening
my
sphere
of
influence
and
being
able
to
make
an
impact
through
positive
contributions
for
our
department.
O
O
It
was
that
desire
in
my
drive,
to
make
us
better
and
make
a
positive
impact
that
drove
me
to
pursue
my
formal
education
and
that
last
piece
would
complete
the
combination
that
would
ultimately
land
me
in
the
position.
That
was
never
part
of
my
career
plan.
But
when
able
would
enable
me
to
do
all
that,
I
could
to
improve
our
department,
and
that
would
be
one
of
the
wildest
rides
of
my
career.
O
O
I
truly
felt
that
as
one
team,
we
would
determine
our
course.
We
would
determine
our
culture
and
our
Legacy
I
shared
that
in
the
coming
days,
months
and
years
we
would
create
the
type
of
organization
that
every
one
of
us
dreamed
we
could
have
I
knew
it
would
not
be
easy
and
I
knew
it
would
not
happen
quickly.
O
It
was
an
uphill
battle
at
that
time,
and
it
will
offer
fair
warning
at
this
time
that
there
may
be
a
football
metaphor
or
two
that
may
be
woven
into
what's
going
to
be
said,
the
next
next
little
bit,
but
it
was
an
uphill
battle
and
little
did
I
know
what
I
was
in
for
it
was
mentioned
just
a
little
bit
ago,
as
Justin
mentioned,
the
that
the
tuna
fire
occurred
over
Memorial
Day
weekend
and
fast
forward
to
three
days
after
December
27th.
O
We
would
see
the
Verdugo
Hills
come
sliding
down
and
in
typical
e-factor
fashion.
That
game
was
on
and
it
started
right
then,
and
right
there
I
would
spend
the
next
five
years,
plus
growing
and
learning
and
making
some
of
the
most
incredible
connections
and
Partnerships,
as
these
were
going
to
be
most
instrumental
in
navigating
the
Dynamics.
As
my
guys
know,
of
what
I
I
would
arguably
call
and
describe
as
the
toughest
time
our
Department's
ever
faced.
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
Beyond
our
city,
family
I've
had
the
privilege
of
being
part
of
the
LA
region
of
Fire
Chiefs
that
Association,
as
well
as
the
foothill
Fire
Chiefs
Association.
These
are
outstanding
groups
of
like-minded
individuals
that
have
the
same
responsibilities
and
desires
to
see
their
respective
departments
areas
and
the
region
seek.
Improvement
I
had
the
Good
Fortune
of
servant
of
the
executive
board
on
the
lafca
group
and
helping
to
shape
the
progress
of
our
9
000
firefighters.
O
O
Our
Tri-City
collaboration
is
something
that
is
truly
special
to
me.
The
vision
and
partnership
in
enhancing
our
area
and
our
Tri-City
operations
is
something
I
know
we
all
three
have
enjoyed.
I
will
miss
our
coffee
sessions
and
I'm
extremely
thankful
for
the
Glendale
and
Pasadena
fire
fire
departments
and
our
Tri-City
collaboration
to
our
administrative
teams.
O
There
is
so
much
that
takes
place
on
a
day-to-day
basis
from
the
admin
shop
upstairs
to
our
front
counter
and
our
fire
prevention
Bureau,
our
inspectors
out
making
inspections,
our
Fleet,
Maintenance,
EMS,
training
qi
and
our
emergency
management
team.
You
are
an
amazing
group
of
individuals
and
your
professionalism
and
grace
are
greatly
appreciated.
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
O
But
that
one
that
tough
day
will
be
today
for
me,
however,
there
is
a
special
highlight
that
is
associated
with
this
story
for
me
today,
and
that,
while
taking
off
my
uniform
today
will
be
a
challenge,
my
oldest
son
will
be
done
in
his
very
soon
for
the
first
time,
with
our
great
utility,
with
Burbank,
Water
and
Power,
he
will
start
his
line
of
line
mechanic
apprenticeship
in
the
coming
weeks
and
we'll
keep
the
Garcia
Legacy
alive
and
well
in
Burbank
I'm,
so
very
proud
of
you,
Bobby
Jack
and
I.
As
I've
stated.
O
O
That
was
the
first
part
of
it.
Excuse
me,
this
Fireball
represents
tradition,
lineage
and
the
future
of
the
greatest
firefighters
who
are
serving
on
over
profession,
with
deep
appreciation
and
gratitude
fire
chief
Eric,
Garcia,
August,
31st,
2023,
BFD
I.
Thank
you
for
an
incredible
journey,
and
thank
you
all
for
being
here
today.
It
means
the
world
to
me
and
to
our
agency
and
daddy
thanks
for
coming
home
brother.
Q
A
That
Bell
is
an
Incredible
Gift.
We
lost
our
Bell,
somehow
some
way
last
September
11th
in
our
celebration.
We
looked
everywhere
for
it,
but
we
got
it
back.
Thank
you.
Chief
I'd
like
to
present
a
gift
from
The
Command
Staff
to
fire
chief
Garcia
traditional
for
us
to
create
a
shadow
box
to
commemorate
all
of
your
badges,
all
the
programs.
You
were
involved
in
in
the
years
of
service
for
the
Burbank
fire
department.
So
I
would
like
to
present
this
shadow
box
to
Chief
Garcia
on
behalf
of
the
Command
Staff.
O
This
is
this
is
so
special
and
again
another,
whereas
a
trade,
Donovan
production.
Thank
you
brother.
This
is
this
is
awesome
many
years
many
years
and
to
be
able
to
get
one
of
these
is
a
true
honor
and
I
will
hang
this
with
pride.
Thank
you
guys
very
much.
A
I'd
like
to
welcome
local
778
present
president
president
Eric
Rowley
for
our
traditional
acts,
presentation.
R
Hi
everyone,
so
this
the
sax
there's
a
lot
of
symbol
to
the
sacks.
Obviously,
the
ax
is
something
one
of
the
basic
tools
of
firefighting.
Many
of
us
personally
carry
axes.
So
there's
a
lot
of
you
know
this
goes
with
you
through
your
entire
career,
so
it
holds
a
severe
significance,
but
as
a
union,
the
fire
chief
does
not
have
to
be
a
part
of
the
International
Association
of
firefighters.
R
Now
he
comes
up
through
the
career
as
a
member
of
the
iff,
but
for
a
chief
to
stay
in
the
iff
is
a
big
symbol
of
what
the
agency
and
what
the
local
means
to
him.
Chief
Garcia
did
serve
as
a
director,
so
I
know
that
stands
close
to
his
heart,
but
on
the
head
of
the
sax,
is
the
iff
emblem,
which
represents
all
of
us,
firefighters
across
this
great
nation,
three
hundred
thousand
plus,
and
so
the
iff
represents
many,
but
at
the
front
of
it
we're
one.
R
So
it's
very
important
that
a
fire
chief
holds
on
to
that
and
we
greatly
appreciate
you
being
a
part
of
778
and
for
the
last
years.
Yes,
we've
had
some
difficulties.
It's
been
challenging
every
time.
I
called
him,
though
he
was
there
didn't
matter
what
time
of
night,
and
there
was
a
few
that
pushed
onto
that
2
A.M
as
we
move
down
the
handle
here.
It
says
Eric
Garcia
in
1994
to
2023,
Burbank,
firefighters,
local
778,
and
it's
been
told
to
me
a
few
times
that
Burbank
punches
above
its
weight,
class
and
I.
R
Think
to
me
that
the
Burbank
firefighters
on
there
is
substantial
and
chief
Garcia,
you
and
I
have
been
to
the
memorial
back
in
Colorado,
we've
been
to
few
places
representing
the
iff
and
that
Burbank
punches
above
its
weight
class,
not
only
as
firefighters
but
as
a
fantastic
City.
So
this
is
well
beyond
just
being
an
ax
there's
so
much
more
to
this
and
what
it
represents
and
for
you
today
it's
the
conclusion
of
a
fantastic
career.
So
thank
you.
Chief
Garcia.
A
Okay,
we
have
one
more
presentation
for
chief
Garcia
and
I'm
told
to
stand
by
just
for
a
second,
as
we
move
on
to
the
batch
pinning
of
our
new
fire
chief
Danny
Alvarez,
as
we
officially
transfer
command
and
pin
a
new
badge
on
Chief
Alvarez.
It's
important
to
know
the
meaning
of
the
badge
itself.
A
Why
am
I
tearing
up
now?
The
badge
of
firefighter
is
a
Maltese
cross
and
the
Maltese
cross.
Assemble
a
protection
and
a
badge
of
honors
is
a
story
that
is
a
hundreds
of
years
old
and
when
a
courageous
manic,
Crusaders
known
as
the
Knights
of
Saint
John,
fought
for
possession
of
the
holy
land,
they
encountered
a
new
weapon
of
War,
which
was
that
weapon
of
Fire.
A
Thus,
these
men
became
our
first
firefighters.
The
heroic
efforts
were
recognized
by
fellow
Crusaders,
who
awarded
each
hero
a
badge
of
honor,
a
cross
similar
to
the
one
that
firefighters
wear
today,
since
the
Knights
of
Saint
John
lived
for
centuries
on
the
island
of
Malta,
the
cross
became
known
as
The
Maltese.
A
Cross
feature
of
the
badge
is
the
bugle,
which
was
used
to
amplify
your
voice
and
direct
firefighters
in
the
fire
ground
prior
to
our
use
of
the
radio,
with
each
rank
starting
a
cap
and
the
captain
there
are
more
bugles
as
you
progress
and
promote
the
rank
of
fire
chief
holds
the
most,
which
is
five
badges
and
is
a
symbol
of
the
great
responsibility
that
it
demands.
I'll
pause
there
for
a
gift
to
Chief
Garcia
here.

This
ceremony,
in
the
badge
that
was
just
pinned
on
my
chest,
serves
as
an
acceptance
of
the
tremendous
responsibility
and
commitment
to
the
members
of
the
fire
department.
The
city
and
the
community
we
serve
I
will
work
tirelessly
for
you,
the

you
and

to
our

to

and

We
could
not
run
the
fire
department
without
you.
Your
work
behind
the
scenes
is
critical
to
our
day-to-day
operations.
I've
seen
firsthand

that
all
of

eager

Rowley
and
the
local
778
board.
Thank
you
for
your
continued
support
and
partnership.
I,
look
forward
to
working
together
to

out
our
mission
in
the
safest
and
most
effective
way
possible
to
our
Command
Staff,
both
past
and
present.
S
Thank
you
for
your
mentorship
and
support.
Thank
you
for
instilling
a
culture
of
excellence
in
the
Burbank
Fire
Department,
a
culture
that
is
centered
around
service,
honor
and
integrity,
one
in
which
we
support
each
other,
as
we
continuously
strive
for
excellence
to
the
Burbank
Community.
You
are
the
reason
why
we
exist
and
we
will
always
put
you
first.
S
S
S
Your
legacy
will
be
forever
embedded
in
the
rich
history
of
the
Burbank
Fire
Department.
Congratulations
on
a
well-deserved
retirement
and
Kathy.
Congratulations
to
you
as
well!
I
know
that
you've
sacrificed
so
much
over
the
last
several
years,
along
with
Joey,
Bobby
and
Ryan,
so
that
Eric
could
be
here
leading
the
Burbank
fire
department.
So
congratulations
to
all
of
you
on
a
job
well
done.
S
S
S
Would
be
in
the
back
seat
with
a
stack
of
three
by
five
cards
asking
me
questions
helping
me
prepare
and
a
few
years
later,
when
Kobe
was
a
teenager,
I,
remember
sitting
at
the
kitchen
table
on
weekends,
with
him
asking
me
interview,
questions
and
then
critiquing
critiquing
my
answers
as
I
prepared
for
a
battalion,
Chief's
exam
and
if
you
ever
want
a
really
truly
honest
critique.
Ask
your
teenager
they'll,
be
very
honest
with
you
Danny
and
Kobe
I.
Don't
know
what
I
did
to
be
so
fortunate.
S
To
have
you
both
in
my
life
but
I'm,
so
incredibly
grateful
and
proud
to
be
your
dad.
Thank
you
for
all
your
help
and
for
being
the
most
amazing
children,
I
could
ever
ask
for
to
my
incredible
wife,
Natalia
I'm,
very
fortunate
that
when
I
was
19
years,
old
I
made
one
of
the
best
decisions
of
my
life,
and
that
was
to
convince
Natalia
to
marry
me
Natalia.
S
You
sacrificed
so
much
for
me
for
our
family
and
for
my
career,
your
unwavering
love
and
support
is
the
only
reason
I'm
here
today,
you've
been
by
my
side.
Every
step
of
the
way
I
would
have
never
gotten
hired
as
a
firefighter
gotten
through
probation
or
made
it
through
the
last
26
years
of
my
career.
Had
it
not
been
for
your
love
and
support.
Thank
you
and
I
love
you
and
speaking
of
families.
I'd
just
like
to
take
a
moment
as
I
wrap
up
here,
to
acknowledge
and
thank
all
the
families
of
our
firefighters.
S
The
role
of
the
families
and
supporters
of
our
firefighters
is
often
overlooked,
whether
it
was
while
our
firefighters
were
on
the
front
lines
playing
a
key
role
in
our
communities:
fight
against
covid-19
or,
while
they're
deployed
for
weeks
at
a
time
fighting
massive
wildfires
or
while
they're
at
work
during
holidays,
birthdays
or
family
events.
It
is
their
families
that
are
at
home,
taking
care
of
things,
providing
much
needed
support
and
allowing
us
to
be
part
of
this
great
and
Noble
profession,
so
to
all
the
families,
spouses,
Partners
parents,
children,
friends
and
supporters
of
our
firefighters.
S
S
A
A
Chief
Alvarez
welcome
home,
my
friend
and
congratulations,
Kathy,
Ryan,
Bobby
and
Joe
Baggs.
Thank
you
is
not
enough
and
as
I
know,
that
you
two
have
given
to
the
Burbank
Fire
Department
I'd
like
to
report
that
we're
officially
returning
your
husband
and
father
to
you
to
enjoy
without
distraction
and
a
new
presence
in
your
life.
A
A
A
Thank
you,
okay,
so
we
wrap
up
here.
Thank
you
so
much
for
attending
today.
Thank
you
for
the
presence
of
all
of
our
partner
agencies
and
dignitaries
and
our
men
and
women
of
our
Burbank
fire
department.
Please
enjoy
the
refreshments
and
fellowship
for
a
little
while
to
the
rear
and
have
a
wonderful
day.
Thank
you,
foreign.
