Burlington High School 2020 Virtual Commencement Celebration
C
D
B
E
C
You
are
graduating
in
two
times
that
may
feel
uncertain.
Our
country
is
facing
a
pandemic
reckoning
with
our
history
of
systemic
racism,
navigating
the
climate
emergency
and
so
much
more.
What
all
of
this
means,
though,
is
that
we
need
you,
your
ideas,
your
energy,
your
heart,
more
than
ever
these
times
are
a
tremendous
opportunity
for
you
to
help
shape
the
future
and
make
it
a
future
that
is
more
sustainable,
equitable
and
just
whether
you
stay
here
in
Vermont
or
your
life
takes
you
to
the
far
corners
of
the
world.
C
I
hope
you
will
carry
with
you
the
lessons
you've
learned
at
the
Burlington
High
School
and
the
values
of
this
Burlington
community.
Congratulations
on
your
graduation
and
all
that
you've
already
accomplished.
I
can't
wait
to
see
the
great
things
that
you
will
achieve.
Next,
the
world
is
ready
for
you
class
of
2020.
F
It
is
an
honor
to
be
here
today
as
chair
of
the
school
board,
representing
our
dedicated
Burlington
board
of
school
commissioners.
Congratulations
to
you
BHS
class
of
2020.
Some
of
you
have
already
celebrated
your
18th
birthday,
and
most
of
you
will
turn
18
at
the
end
of
this
memorable
year
today,
as
you
graduate
I
urge
you
to
register
to
vote
eighteen
year
olds
were
given
the
right
to
vote
almost
50
years
ago,
and
we
don't
hear
voices
of
the
youth
vote
now,
where
are
our
18
to
24
year
olds,
on
Election
Day?
F
How
can
we
motivate
you
to
vote?
Your
teachers
have
worked
with
you
and
they
have
filled
up
your
days
from
pre-k
to
12th
grade
guiding
you
along
with
your
family.
Now
it
is
up
to
you
to
choose
what
to
do
with
your
time.
What
what
choices?
Will
you
make?
What
are
your
short-term
goals
this
summer,
and
where
will
your
ambition
take
you?
F
We
have
witnessed
your
physical
and
intellectual
growth,
and
now
we
need
to
hear
and
see
your
voice
I
take
seriously
along
with
the
other
of
elected
civic
leaders
here
in
the
state
of
Vermont
on
the
local
and
state
level,
the
importance
of
making
voter
registration
and
voter
accessibility
reachable
to
you
and
every
US
citizen
here
in
Vermont.
That
is
not
the
case
in
other
states
throughout
America
I.
F
Ask
that
you,
google,
how
to
register
to
vote
in
our
state
watch
and
witness
your
fellow
BHS
students
and
BHS
family
members
and
burlington
community
members
on
this
website
and
video
modeling
how
to
register
to
vote.
You
can
view
this
video
in
Arabic,
Burmese,
Nepali,
Somali
Swahili
and
in
English
I
have
asked
your
classmate
wanda
suma
to
share
this
moment
and
message
with
me.
Welcome
Wanda.
G
G
We
have
to
be
better
than
this
moment
in
time.
Compassion
allows
you
to
see
the
world
through
the
eyes
of
others.
It
has
been
said
that
compassion
only
comes
when
we
see
the
humanity
and
others
this
world
needs
you
and
your
vote.
No.
That
injustice
anywhere
is
a
threat
to
justice
everywhere
register
to
vote,
get
up
stand
up,
stand
up
for
your
rights,
get
up
stand
up,
don't
give
up
the
fight.
H
Congratulations:
class
of
2020
you
made
it
you
made
to
the
journey
the
end
of
your
high
school
career,
I'm,
sure,
you're
thinking.
This
is
not
the
end
of
your
academic
career
that
you
envisioned
here
at
Bronson,
high
school,
but
you've
had
to
endure
global
pandemics,
political
and
social
upheaval
and,
of
course,
remote
learning.
But
you
made
it
here.
Adversity
does
not
build
character,
it
reveals
it,
and
all
of
you
have
revealed
your
character
in
reaching
to
graduation
to
fight
for
change.
For
tomorrow.
You
must
be
resilient
today.
H
That
resiliency
has
been
demonstrated
with
our
class
of
2020
in
honor
of
your
perseverance
and
resiliency
I've
created
a
superintendent
resiliency
scholarship
for
a
student
who
has
faced
adversity
and
has
overcome
through
their
resiliency.
You
know,
there's
an
old
saying
that
says
it's
not
how
you
start,
but
it's
how
you
finish.
Some
of
our
students
have
a
tougher
road
through
high
school,
navigating
through
the
bumps
and
bruises
as
they
pursue
and
navigate
through
the
academic
year.
H
So
one
student
in
particular
has
shown
great
resiliency
throughout
their
academic
year
and
I'd
like
to
honor
that
student
today
and
that
student
is
Jabbar's
phuket.
So
congratulations
Jabbar's
and
congratulations
to
the
entire
graduating
class
of
2020.
Your
hard
work
and
dedication.
Resiliency
has
brought
you
here
today
and
before
you
go.
I
want
to
share
a
little
note
with
you.
I
once
saw
a
student
who
had
a
shirt
that
said
the
one
who
said
the
sky's.
The
limit
had
no
imagination.
So
if
you're
going
to
dream
dream
big,
thank
you.
I
Thank
You
seniors
for
this
honor
I
understand
that
this
celebration,
one
you
have
earned,
may
feel
bittersweet
in
the
years
leading
up
to
this
moment,
you
likely
had
a
different
image
of
this
day
painted
in
your
mind,
we
did
too
yet
even
as
I
speak
to
this
empty
gymnasium
I.
Imagine
you
all
here
and
I
feel
the
wonder
of
our
community.
Our
togetherness
close
your
eyes
and
imagine
this.
I
I
I
You
fling
your
caps
in
the
air,
laugh
and
cry,
and
hug
and
high-five
you
pour
out
onto
the
lawn
and
ring
the
bell
hold
on
to
that
image
and
let's
not
allow
the
fact
that
we
can't
be
together
today
to
take
away
from
all
you
did
to
get
here.
We
can
still
feel
the
excitement
in
the
air,
the
support
of
families,
teachers
and
communities
and
the
nervousness
of
what
follows.
I
I
I
I
I
I
Remember
leaders
are
not
necessarily
the
ones
who
get
the
most
likes
on
Instagram
or
the
ones
that
troll
Twitter,
and
if
anything,
you
have
learned
that
leading
is
not
defined
by
who
has
the
label
leader
such
as
president
CEO,
mayor,
governor
police,
chief
or
even
teacher?
No
leading
is
standing
up
for
others
and
saying
no
more
leading
is
speaking
up
speaking
out
and
not
letting
your
position
or
the
perception
of
your
position
dictate
how
much
power
you
will
or
will
not
have
better.
I
I
Leaders
are
everyday
people,
people
like
you
and
me
they
ask
for
a
preferred
pronoun.
They
wear
a
mask
at
the
grocery
store.
They
pick
up
litter
on
the
street.
They
deliver
groceries
to
a
neighbor
in
need.
They
walk
a
friend
across
campus
at
night.
They
take
the
keys
from
a
friend
who's
had
too
much
they
interrupt
blowhards
and
bullies.
They
bear
witness
and
they
vote
leaders
amplify
another's
idea
before
they
own.
I
J
Thank
you
can
be
a
weird
phrase.
We
say
it
all
the
time
in
the
hallways
in
class.
When
someone
passes
a
dish
at
the
table,
we
say
thank
you
and
then
we
move
on
for
getting
what
we
were
saying.
Thank
you
for
goodbyes
are
like
that
too.
We
say
goodbye
after
school,
in
between
classes
and
at
the
end
of
the
school
year,
always
assuming
that
we'll
see
each
other
again,
we
say
these
phrases
more
as
a
routine
than
as
a
heartfelt
sentiment.
J
So,
on
behalf
of
my
class
I'd
like
to
say
a
sincere
thank
you
to
our
families,
our
teachers
and
to
you,
my
classmates
and
friends,
thank
you
to
the
teachers
who
have
come
in
early
and
worked
late
with
us.
Your
passion
for
what
you
teach
has
inspired
us
to
become
lifelong
learners.
Join
the
journey
now
I'd
like
to
thank
our
teachers,
who
are
leaving
this
year
to
continue
with
their
own
journeys.
Among
them
are
teachers
who
have
been
dedicating
their
time
to
students
here
at
Burlington
high
school
for
longer
than
we
have
been
alive.
J
Thank
you
for
your
incredible
years
of
service,
family
and
friends
are
difficult
to
thank
because
really
I
can
only
confidently
thank
my
own
so
rather
than
me
saying
something
boring
and
generic
right
now.
I
challenge
you
to
thank
your
own
families,
friends,
neighbors
and
whoever.
Whoever
else
may
have
helped
you
to
be
here
today
for
what
they
mean
to
you.
I'll
start
thank
you
to
my
parents,
who
have
put
band-aids
on
countless
skinned
knees
who
have
woken
up
so
very
early
to
drive
me
to
driver's
ed
at
7
a.m.
J
J
This
fall.
There
was
an
incident
where
someone
was
rude
to
me
in
class.
It
wasn't
a
huge
deal,
but
it
left
me
feeling
chastised
and
lacking
in
self-confidence.
The
next
day.
One
of
my
classmates,
who
might
never
spoken
to
before
in
my
life
approached
me
to
tell
me
that
she
understood
my
discomfort
honestly
that
made
my
day
and
I.
Don't
think
I
said
thank
you
when
it
happened
so
I'll
say
it
now.
J
In
so
many
ways
you
have
gone
to
work,
watched,
siblings
volunteered
for
the
food
shelf,
sewn
masks,
and
so
much
more
and
on
top
of
all
of
this,
you
have
also
completed
class
work,
taken
tests
and
finished
your
PL
PS
and
to
the
other,
essential
workers
watching
this,
the
teachers
who
have
had
to
transfer
to
online
learning
and
family
members
and
others
in
the
community
who
have
continued
to
work
throughout
this
pandemic.
Thank
you,
I
really
mean
it.
J
J
Every
summer
since
I
was
10,
I've
been
going
to
camp
and
I'd
like
to
take
some
time
to
share
something
that
I've
learned
there
with
you
at
camp.
We
don't
say
goodbye.
Instead,
we
say
see
you
later,
because
even
if
we're
leaving
the
next
day
to
go
home
to
our
families,
there
will
always
be
a
next
summer
when
we'll
see
each
other
again
and
even
as
we
grow
out
of
summer
camp
in
public
school
there
will.
We
can
still
find
time
to
see
each
other
again
I'd
like
to
express
that
same
sentiment.
J
Here
too,
we
don't
have
a
next
school
year
together
to
look
forward
to
instead
we'll
be
going
to
college
joining
the
military,
taking
gap
years
and
getting
jobs,
but
that
doesn't
erase
the
importance
of
the
friendships
that
we
have
built
up
until
now,
and
while
we
aren't
doing
much
seeing
of
our
friends
and
classmates
right
now,
I
hope
in
the
future
we'll
be
able
to
see
each
other
again
face
to
face.
So
good
luck
and
see
you
later,
our
class
of
2020
I
hope
that
next
time
it
will
be
in
person.
E
K
K
If
you've
never
just
watched
a
waterfall,
it's
something
that
I
highly
recommend
doing
it's
impossible,
not
to
be
awed
by
the
power
of
the
water.
The
calm
glassy
surface
smoothly
curving
over
the
edge
suddenly
turned
to
roaring
and
bubbling
twists
and
Lily
crap
endlessly
crashing
down
over
hidden
rocks
and
landing
far
below
sending
up
a
spray
of
mist.
As
I
watched
the
waterfall
that
day,
I
found
myself
thinking
about
the
water
itself,
how
the
water
in
this
waterfall
had
come
from
so
many
different
places.
K
But
now
all
this
water
having
come
from
all
sorts
of
directions
and
distances,
was
right
here
in
front
of
me
crashing
over
these
Falls
and
after
this
waterfall
the
river
will
widen
out
again
until
it
reaches
Lake
Champlain,
where
all
the
water
will
be
dispersed.
But
right
here
for
just
a
few
seconds,
all
this
water
is
concentrated
in
one
amazing,
powerful
stream.
K
K
However,
I
want
to
acknowledge
that
some
paths
here
have
been
much
longer
and
harder.
It's
a
lot
harder
to
graduate
from
high
school.
As
you
didn't
speak
English
before
you
came
here,
it's
a
lot
harder
to
graduate
from
high
school
if
you're
living
in
poverty
or
without
a
home,
it's
a
lot
harder
to
graduate
from
high
school.
You
have
an
unstable
home
life
or
your
struggle
with
mental
health
challenges.
K
Some
people
started
a
lot
higher
up
in
the
mountains
and
had
to
make
that
long
journey
down
to
this
waterfall,
but
we
all
made
it
here
to
this
waterfall
to
graduate
together
as
one
senior
class
and
just
as
the
water
which
is
crashing
over
the
Falls
of
the
Winooski
right
now
will
soon
be
dispersed
into
the
whole
of
Lake
Champlain.
We
too
will
soon
be
dispersed
into
the
wider
world.
K
Some
of
us
are
going
to
college
or
trade
school,
some
starting
a
job
or
taking
a
gap
year
before
deciding
what
to
do.
And
yes,
some
of
us
have
no
plan
at
all.
Let's
face
it.
We
are
plunging
into
an
uncertain
and
likely
chaotic
future,
but
no
matter
where
we
end
up
I
think
we
will
all
remember
graduating
today
from
this
school
and
the
fact
that
all
of
us
who
started
in
so
many
different
places
and
are
going
to
do
so
many
different
things
are
graduating
together
is
not
something
to
be
taken
for
granted.
K
According
to
the
2019
Burlington
school
district,
in
your
report
there
are
45
languages
other
than
English
spoken
in
our
district,
with
40%
of
the
district
being
non-white
and
approximately
half
the
district
qualifying
for
free
or
reduced
lunch.
We
as
a
district
do
have
both
racial
and
economic
diversity.
K
K
Many
of
us
don't
know
what
next
year
is
going
to
look
like
and
have
seen
our
plans
crumble
as
the
virus
has
erased.
So
many
future
plans
for
the
last
18
years,
we
have
largely
been
under
the
guidance
of
parents,
teachers
counselors,
but
now,
as
we
graduate
high
school,
we
are
becoming
independent
people.
We
get
to
make
decisions
for
ourselves,
and
while
this
may
be
a
scary
proposition
for
many
of
us,
I
know
it
is
for
me,
it
also
gives
us
some
real
power.
K
We
as
individuals
get
to
decide
how
we
want
to
live
our
life
in
the
past
few
weeks
and
months.
It
has
become
painfully
clear
that
we
are
far
from
the
place
that
we
want
to
be.
We
have
a
criminal
justice
system
that
has
frequently
failed
and
continues
to
fail
people
of
color
and
minorities.
We
have
a
planet
that
continues
to
be
eroded
by
climate
change.
We
have
a
pandemic
that
has
put
one
in
four
adults
out
of
a
job
and
has
already
killed
over
a
hundred
thousand
people
in
this
country
alone.
K
We
walked
out
as
a
school
to
protest,
gun
violence.
We
marched
as
a
school
to
rally
for
climate
action.
We
stood
as
a
school
to
watch
the
black
lives
matter,
flag
being
raised
as
a
show
of
our
schools,
commitment
to
racial
inclusion,
and
these
acts
were
made
much
more
powerful
by
the
fact
that
our
symbolic
waters
crashed
down
with
other
young
people
all
around
the
country
in
the
world
who
are
participating
in
similar
acts.
K
K
We
can
reshape
the
world.
How
should
I?
How
should
you,
how
should
we,
the
Burlington,
High
School
class
of
2020,
shaped
the
world
for
the
common
good
and
the
common
future
to
which
we
are
all
headed?
I,
certainly
don't
know
all
the
ways,
but
the
great
African
American
novelist,
Toni
Morrison
gives
us
an
image
to
carry
with
us
as
we
travel
over
this
waterfall.
E
A
Thank
you,
Ursa
I
am
pleased
and
proud

you're
gonna
want
to
listen
to
what
I'm
about
to
say.
Bill
Hackett
would
have
been
a
member
of
the
class
of
1963
if
on
a
warm
sunny
day
in
June
of
1961
almost
exactly
59
years
ago
today,
he
had
not
given
up
his
life
in
an
aerobic
attempt
to
save
the
life

a

the
William

in

to
a

of
the
senior
class
at
BHS.
L
At
the
time
of
his
death,
we
had
just
completed
our
sophomore
year.
Bill
was
an
outstanding
athlete
and
an
active
participant
in
school
activities
and
a
warm
friendly
and
modest
fellow.
It
isn't
often
that
a
person
can
be
described
as
being
liked
by
everyone,
but
Bill
was
just
that.
He
was
admired
by
classmates
competitors,
teachers
and
parents.

A
Our
2019
2020
BHS
Teacher
of
the
Year,
is
a
teacher
who
has
touched
many
lives
in
an
extremely
powerful
way
over
the
last
several
years.
She
is
a
well-liked,
well-respected
member
of
her
department.
She
collaborates
earnestly
with
her
colleagues
and
strives
to
raise
the
morale
of
all
around
her.
Our
Teacher
of
the
Year
is
committed
to
working
with
some
of
our
most
vulnerable
students.
She
is
kind
patient
and
caring,
but
at
the
same
time,
has
extremely
high
standards
for
all
students.
A
All
educators
know
that
building
relationships
with
students
is
one
of
the
most
important
foundational
aspects
of
teaching
our
Ward
winner
goes
above
and
beyond
in
regard
to
building
relationships
with
her
students
and
their
families.
Much
of
this
approach
is
steeped
in
restorative
practices,
which
this
teacher
is
firmly
committed
to,
as
she
serves
on
both
school
and
district
committees
to
further
the
cause.
Because
of
her
exceptional
record.
As
a
teacher
and
her
contributions
to
the
BHS
community,
we
recognize
Jill
Jacob
Ellie
as
the
2019
2020
Teacher
of
the
Year.
E
Thank
You
principal
green,
we
ask
you
all
at
home
to
please
enjoy
the
slideshow
of
our
graduating
seniors,
many
of
whom
participated
in
their
own
graduation
ceremonies
last
week
where
they
received
diplomas.
We
were
recognized
individually
and
were
able
to
safely
celebrate
with
our
families.
Thank
you
to
all
staff,
faculty
and
volunteers
who
made
it
possible
to
celebrate
the
class
of
2020
this
year.
Please
enjoy
the

and
congratulations.

M
E
Thank
You
mr.
Perez
I
would
like
to
take
a
moment
to
thank
everyone,
who's
taking
the
time
out
of
their
day
to
sit
and
watch
the
ceremony,
as
well
as
all
the
people
that
came
and
watched
as
we
walked
across
the
front
of
Burlington
High
School
last
week
receiving
our
diplomas
and
officially
graduated
I'd
like
to
close
the
ceremony
with
one
last
piece
of
advice,
class
of
2020.
The
next
chapter
of
our
lives
begins.
Now
many
of
us
will
be
attending
colleges.
E
This
fall
taking
a
gap
year,
joining
the
military,
getting
a
new
job
or
setting
off
into
the
world.
For
most
of
us.
This
will
be
our
first
time
heading
out
without
our
support
system
right
by
our
side
and
we're
going
to
have
to
figure
things
out
as
we
go
along.
It
goes
without
saying
that
this
will
be
a
hard
journey,
but
it
will
open
up
countless
possibilities
for
the
future.
E
Don't
let
those
possibilities
stress
you
out
and
don't
let
the
thoughts
of
your
future
and
the
rest
of
your
life
bog
you
down
now
that
the
pressure
of
Highschool
is
gone.
This
journey
is
about
you
and
discovering
who
you
are
now
is
the
time
to
really
be
true
to
yourself
and
listen.
Inward
listening
to
yourself
is
more
important
than
any
other
voice.
You
may
let
into
your
life,
don't
let
those
voices
change
you
in
a
way
you're.
Not!
Okay
with
this
is
a
journey
of
self-discovery
that
everyone
takes
and
for
us
it
starts
now.
