In a normal year, we would extend the offer to join us at Kindergarten Information Sessions in your community and at each school, where you could hear from kindergarten teachers, talk to our Afterschool team, connect with our Preschool director, and ask questions of the registration team. Due to Covid-19 Restrictions, we are offering alternatives to learn more about our schools. This video is about the Integrated Arts Academy (IAA). The mission of the IAA is to explore academic knowledge through intentional art experiences. Our diverse community collaborates and celebrates the world through meaningful learning and creative self-expression as we prepare students for success in the 21st Century. At this magnet school, students are learning through the lens of the four art forms: movement, drama, music and visual arts. IAA core partners include the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Burlington City Arts and St. Michael’s College. Located at 6 Archibald Street in the Old North End of Burlington, IAA serves approximately 260 students in grades Pre-K-5.

about
our
kindergarten
program
and
about
the
integrated
arts
academy,
so
sit

lot

information

share
with
you.
We
know
this
is
an
exciting
time
for
you
and
your
new
kindergartner.
So
we
hope
this
information
will
be
of
value
to
you
over
the
next
few
minutes.

this
kindergarten

hall.
First,
my
name
is
kevin
robinson,
the
principal
here
at
integrated
arts
academy,
we're
also
joined
by
our
school
counselor
meredith
hoisington,
our
arts,
coach,
emily
titterton,
but
the
stars
of
this
occasion
are
our
dynamic
kindergarten
team,
emily
stewart
and
holly
becker
we're
excited
to
have
them
share
the
intricate
details
of
our
kindergarten
program
with
you
over
this
time.

begin
I'd
like
to
give
you
a
little
background
information
on
the
integrated
arts
academy,
if
you're
not
familiar
with
our
school,
the
first
question
you
may
ask
is:
what
does
it
mean
to
be
an
integrated
arts
academy?
We
have
the
honor
of
being
one
of
two
magnet
schools
in
burlington
school
district
at
integrated
arts
academy.

What
it
means
for
us
is
we
take
arts
integration
as
an
approach
to
teaching
and
learning
for
students
and
where
students
are
allowed
to
conduct
and
demonstrate
understanding
through
the
art
form.
So
this
allows
students
to
engage
in
a
creative
process
which
connects
art
forms
with
other
subject
areas
such
as
math,
science,
english
and
social
studies
to
meet
evolving
objectives
of
the
arts,
along
with
their
academic
studies
in
math,
science,
english
and
social
studies.

emily
stewart
and
I
am
one
of
the
kindergarten
teachers
at
iaa.
You
have
a
kiddo
that
is
entering
kindergarten
wow.
This
is
very
exciting.
I
am
sure
it
is
also
a
little
nerve-wracking,
but
let
me
assure
you:
kindergarten
is
truly
a
magical
year
as
kindergarten
teachers
we
get
to
welcome
your
children
into
our
classrooms
and
introduce
them
to
their
very
first
year
in
elementary
school.
We
consider
this
a
huge,
honor
and
privilege.

We
recognize
and
celebrate
that
our
students
enter
kindergarten
with
a
variety
of
backgrounds
and
past
experiences.
They
are
diverse
in
their
interests,
their
abilities,
their
challenges
and
so
many
other
ways.
We
might
have
some
students
that
enter
k
that
have
no
idea
what
a
letter
is,
while
others
are
writing
sentences
or
words.

There
is
such
a
wide
range
of
skills,
but
they
all
grow
in
so
many
ways.
Over
the
course
of
this
year,
I
like
to
think
of
kindergarten.
As
a
bridge
year,
many
of
our
students
come
from
play-based
preschools
or
might
not
have
been
in
any
type
of
school
before
entering
kindergarten
and
at
the
end
of
the
year
they
are
heading
to
the
academic
world
of
first
grade
throughout
the
year
we
transition
gradually
between
these
two
settings.

the
first
six
weeks
of
k
look
very
different
than
the
last
six
weeks
of
k
in
order
to
help
our
students
succeed.
We
take
the
time
to
develop
deep
and
meaningful
connections
with
each
student
we
set
out
to
learn
their
individual
learning
styles.
We
want
to
know,
what's
going
to
motivate
them
through
a
challenge.
We
want
to
know
what
their
interests
are,
what
their
favorite
things
are
to
do,
what
they
like
to
eat.

There
is
so
much
wonder
and
joy
in
a
kindergarten
classroom
if
you
are
walking
by
our
classrooms
right
now,
you
might
hear
singing
and
laughter
or
a
really
rich
conversation
with
tons
of
questions.
I
am
just
so
excited

your
children
to
be
starting
this
amazing
year
and
we
hope
you

So
we
take
the
time
in
the
beginning
of
the
year
to
learn
how
to
be
a
positive
member
of
the
classroom.
We
work
together
to
establish
our
rules
and
develop
a
predictable
routine
with
clear
expectations.
We
lead
the
students
through
a
guided
discovery
of
the
classroom.
They
learn
where
our
learning
materials
are
kept
and
how
to
take
care
of
them
properly.

We
model
how
to
use
a
growth
mindset
and
remind
them
to
do
so
in
order
to
help
them
persevere
through
a
challenge
throughout
the
year.
The
kinders
gain
so
many
health
skills
such
as
opening
their
own
string,
cheese
or
a
milk
carton
during
our
snack
or
maybe
they're
zipping
their
coat
up
without
assistance.

We
help
our
students
gain
emotional
intelligence
by
exploring
feelings
through
read-alouds
conversations,
puppet
shows
and
more
learning
about
empathy
and
strategies
to
help
with
self-regulation
holly.
My
partner
teacher
will
discuss
the
early
literacy
and
math
skills
in
more
detail
as
we
move
through
this
presentation,
but
we
use
the
district
developed
curriculum
that
is
taught
across
the
six
elementary
schools
in
bsd.

We
want
to
encourage
growth
across
all
the
developmental
domains,
including
fine
and
gross
motor
skills.
We
use
hands-on
learning
experiences
that
keep
our
active
learners
engaged.
For
example,
in
years
past,
we
have
partnered,
with
our
pe
teacher,
to
implement
an
amazing
program
called
action-based
learning
in
which
gross
motor
skills
are
paired
with
academic
skills,
and
we
would
love
to
bring
this
back.
We
also
help
support
our
students,
share
their
ideas
and
listen
to
the
perspective
of
others.

Some
kids
have
no
trouble
sharing
their
opinions,
while
others
may
be
a
bit
more
shy
or
reserved.
We
practice
circles
on
a
regular
basis
to
help
students
get
in
the
habit
of
sharing
and
listening
to
each
other.
We
want
to
encourage
our
students
to
ask
questions
and
think
critically
about
how
to
solve
problems.

Kindergarten
literacy
is
broken
into
several
different
chunks.
We
have
readers
workshop
writers,
workshop
lots
of
read
alouds
and
word
work
in
our
word
work.
We
focus
on
phonics,
spelling
handwriting
and
vocabulary
going
back
up
to
reader's
workshop.
We
might
break
up
into
groups
and
work
on
reading
strategies.

We
think
about
all
the
different
ways
that
we
can
be
a
writer
all
throughout
the
day
and
all
throughout
the
year.
There
are
many
read-alouds
sprinkled
along
the
day.
We
might
have
a
book
that
we
focus
on
every
day,
so
we'll
read
the
same
story
over
and
over
and
over
until
we're
all
really
familiar
with
it,
and
we
also
have
other
read-alouds
that
we
do
for
fun.
Maybe
they
link
to
other
parts
of
our
curriculum,
or
maybe
it
just
seems
like
a
great
time
to
dive
into
another
book.

word,
work
we
work
together.
We
work
independently.
We
work
in
whole
groups
and
small
groups
and
it
might
look
a
little
different
each
day
we
use
a
math
curriculum,
called
eureka,
we'll
often
start
out
our
day
in
number
corner,
where
we
talk
about
the
calendar
and
count
how
many
days
we've
been
learning
in
school,
we
talk
about
counting
by
fives
and
tens
all
the
way
up
to
100.

science
and
social
studies,
we
have
units
of
study
that
were
developed
by
the
bsd
curriculum
team,
and
these
are
really
hands-on
and
engaging
often
utilizing
a
more
project-based
approach
to
explore
these
topics
for
science.
We
discuss
the
five
senses,
we
have
a
weather
unit
and
we
also
have
one
on
motion,
for
example,
in
our
forces
in
motion
unit,
the
kids
love
to
explore
ramps
and
marble
runs
and
we'll
present
them
with
different
engineering
tasks.

As
we
learn
new
and
exciting
things,
we
might
add
stations
to
choice
time,
for
instance,
when
we're
learning
about
community
helpers,
we
might
add
a
post
office
in
the
dramatic
play
area
or
we
might
have
some
new
math
games
that
were
really
fun
and
exciting,
and
the
kids
really
want
to
keep
playing
them.
So
that
might
be
an
option
at
choice.
Time
too,
in
kindergarten.
We
know
how
important
it
is
for
children
to
have
time
to
play
and
to
make
their
own
choices
and
to
move
their
body,
and
that's
how
they'll
learn
best
so
choice.

I
am
the
arts
coach
at
integrated
arts
academy
and
in
kindergarten,
I'm
often
known
as
the
other
miss
emily.
So
I
am
going
to
talk
to
you
a
bit
about
some
of
our
arts
programs
and
arts
integration
programming
each
day.
Kindergarten
has
a
different,
unified
arts.

One
of
the
unique
things
about
iaa
is
that
we
have
formal
partnerships
with
local
community
arts
organizations,
the
flynn
center
for
performing
arts,
burlington
city
arts,
lake
champlain,
chamber,
music
festival
and
young
tradition
vermont.
You
will
see
these
partnerships
show
up
in
school-wide
events
and
also
programming
happening
in
inside
each
classroom
and
throughout
the
school.

Smaller
residencies
also
occur
from
time
to
time
throughout
the
school
year
in
an
individual
classroom
or
grade
level,
and
then
the
last
item
on
the
list
that
I
wanted
to
call
out
is
that
in
a
normal
year
we
have
three
shows
that
each
child
gets
to
see.
Two
are
selected
by
that
grade
level.
That
would
be
age
appropriate
and
connected
to
their
curriculum,
and
then
the
last
one
is
always
a
school-wide
show.
So
it's
a
shared
experience
between
all
students
and
staff.

When
students
follow
the
roar
rules,
teachers
notice
that
they're
doing
it
they
give
they.
They,
the
teachers
give
kids
roar
cards
because
they
have
followed
specific
roar
rules
and
students
earn
these
cards
and
those
go
towards
classroom
celebrations.
You
know
when
the
class
earns
100,
roar
cards
or
the
school.
The
whole
school
earns
a
certain
number
of
cards.

Then
we
have,
like
you
know
big
school-wide
celebrations
which
might
be
you
know
going
out
to
the
park
or
having
like
a
dance
party,
or
you
know,
a
classroom
celebration
might
be
a
pajama
day
or
a
stuffy
day.
It
just
depends
on
the
classroom
and
the
age
group,
and
so
on,
but
you'll
hear
kids
talking
about
roar
cards,
that
they
got
roar
cards
and
that's
a
really
positive
thing
and
something
that
we
celebrate.

The
focus
is
on
accountability,
repairing
harm,
as
opposed
to
you
know
the
rules
that
were
broken.
But
it's
about
how
do
we?
You
know?
What
did
what
did
we
do?
What
can
we
do
to
help
mend
the
relationship?
What
can,
what
does
the
person
need
to
to
to
feel
better
and
circles
are?
Are
a
tool
that
are
used
by
teachers
to
sort
of
strengthen
those
relationships
to
build
those
relationships
as
a
proactive
approach.

We
also
have
a
team
of
counselors.
There's
me
the
school
counselor
we
have
the
school
psychologist,
and
then
we
have
quite
a
few
contracted
professionals
who
are
therapists.
We
have
a
social
worker,
some
are
contracted
through
howard.
Some,
you
know
are
other
therapists
from
the
community
that
work
here
at
the
school
to
support
student,
social
emotional
needs.

We
like
to
greet
each
child
at
the
door
and
then
they
head
to
their
table,
maybe
for
a
quick
project
or
they
might
check
their
job.
We
then
have
our
morning
meeting,
which
is
a
great
exercise
to
build
a
sense
of
belonging
to
our
community.
We
greet
each
other.
We
read
a
message
and
we'll
review
our
schedule
for
the
day,
then
we'll
have
a
morning
snack.
We
provide
one,
but
students
can
also
bring
their
own
from
home
and
then
we'll
have
our
literacy
block
with
all
of
the
components
of
our
literacy
instruction.

Like
our
read-aloud,
our
writing
our
guided
reading
time.
We
often
have
a
morning
recess
in
the
spring
and
the
fall,
but
in
the
winter
this
might
be
a
movement
break
inside.
Instead,
then,
we
have
our
number
corner,
which
is
when
we
review
our
calendar
and
by
the
end
of
the
year,
students
are
pretty
much
running
this
time
on
their
own,
which
is
amazing
to
see.
We
will
then
often
use
a
number
talk
to
launch
into
our
math
block.

We
prefer
to
have
an
earlier
lunch
for
our
kindergarten,
kids
and
we
help
them
through
the
lunch
line
through
the
compost
line,
as
it
can
be.
A
little
overwhelming
at
first
and
kids
are
also
welcome
to
bring
a
lunch
box
from
home.
If
that's
better,
for
your
family
and
after
our
lunch,
it's
just
a
little
hectic
again.

So
we
like
to
have
a
mindfulness
or
a
quiet
moment
when
we
come
back
to
the
classroom
to
help
them
get
ready
for
the
rest
of
the
day,
then
we'll
have
maybe
our
science
block
or
a
social
studies
block
again.
This
could
be
something
that
we
do
like
social
studies
for
three
weeks
as
we
explore
unit,
or
we
might
have
our
big
buddies
time
where
we
read
with
our
big
buddies
or
maybe
we're
having
our
integrated
arts
block
with
miss
emily.

After
that
afternoon,
time
we'll
go
out
for
our
recess,
and
this
is
the
recess
that
we
have
throughout
the
year
in
any
type
of
weather.
When
we
come
back,
we
will
have
our
specials
that
could
be
our
art
or
pe
and
then
we'll
have
an
afternoon
snack
again.
Not
all
kids
need
to
eat
the
snack,
but
we
like
to
offer
it
then
we'll
have
our
academic
choice
time,
where
students
are
engaging
in
a
more
play-based
time.

mother
to
two
little
boys.
They
currently
go
to
integrated
arts
academy.
I
currently
have
a
third
grader
nico
and
a
kindergartner
named.
We
are
super
grateful
for
the
joyful
atmosphere
that
ie
brings
when
choosing
a
school,
especially
during
these
challenging
times.
We
were
very
relieved
and
very
happy
that
micah
got
to
go
to
integrated
arts
academy
this
year
for
kindergarten.

currently
have
miss
holly
and
we
absolutely
love
her.
When
I
drop
my
son
off,
I
know
that
he
is
safe
and
that
his
emotional
needs
are
met.
Those
two
things
are
very
important
to
me
as
a
mother,
especially
during
these
challenging
times.
I
think
emotional
needs
are
very
important
right
now
for
our
children
and
those
are
getting
met
every
day.
I
have
noticed
that
when
he
comes
home
he
is
so
happy
and
he
can't
wait
to
go
back
the
next
day.

I've
also
noticed
that
his
developmental
skills
have
enhanced
tremendously,
and
areas
like
he
used
to
struggle
have
improved
a
lot.
So
I
can't
thank
enough
the
staff
and
the
whole
school
for
providing
love
for
my
son.

also
love
the
community
at
iaa
that
that
it
brings,
I
love
meeting
all
the
parents
and
how
everyone's
on
the
same
page,
I
feel
like
we're
very
welcomed
in
one
big
family.

not
only
provides
emotional
support,
but
I
also
feel,
like
my
kids
are
being
heard
and
as
a
parent
I'm
being
heard,
and
so
the
communication
level
is
awesome
all
around.

much

my
kids
and
super
happy

be
a
part
of
it.

Just
a
few
to
start,
our
daughter
started
kindergarten
in
the
fall
during
the
pandemic,
and
we
really
appreciated
the
level
of
communication
both
from
the
teacher
directly
and
from
the
school
administrators
on
some
of
the
expectations
and
hearing
reassurances
from
them
on
how
this
was
all
going
to
work.
So
we
number
one
appreciate
the
communication.

sends

teacher

weekly
newsletters
home
with
her.
I
actually
just
have
one
at
my
desk
here
every
week
that
has
pictures,
and
I
think
this
is
only
half
of
it,
but
a
little
write-up
about
what
they're
doing
every
week
and
she
uses
an
app
called
seesaw,
which
she
posts,
pictures
on
and
videos,
and
it's
a
great
way
for
us
to
engage
with
our
daughter
at
dinner
time
and
ask
her
about
these
photos
and
what
kind
of
art
project
they're
working
on
or
how
they're
working
on
numbers
and
math
she's
really
really
thrived.

Despite
the
pandemic
and
kids
are
resilient
and
adaptive
and
we
were
definitely
nervous
about
wearing
masks,
but
they
seem
to
really
just
kind
of
understand
that
that's
the
expectation
and
they've
learned
they've
grown
they've
loved
the
school,
and
I
love
to
learn
from
her.
Actually,
she
has
a
really
diverse
classroom.

The
diversity
at
iaa
is
really
what
makes
it
quite
special
for
us
and
she
came
home
in
december
and
was
really
excited
to
share
with
me
that
two
of
the
students
in
her
class
celebrate
diwali
diwali,
and
I
got
to
learn
about
that.
So
it's
been
really
fun.
It's
been
a
great
community
and
we're
really
grateful
to
be
a
part
of
it.

The
characters
in
the
books
that
they
read
in
my
daughter's
kindergarten
class
reflect
the
diversity
of
the
classroom
and
emphasize
that
their
community
doesn't
revolve
around
whiteness
the
teachers.
I've
met
and
heard
about
are
so
kind
and
supportive
and
are
led
by
a
terrific
principal
kevin
robinson
who
has
done
a
great
job,
keeping
things
rolling
and
kids
and
staff
safe.
During
the
pandemic.

My
daughter
loves
coming
to
school
every
single
day
and
always
begged
me
to
stay
just
a
few
minutes
longer.
At
the
end,
she
has
made
art
almost
daily
and
can't
get
enough
of
it
and
now
she's,
starting
to
read
books
to
her
little
sister,
she's,
totally
thriving
in
every
way,
and
I
can
be
happier
with
her
experience
there
so.
