teacher
recognition
Awards
have
been

effect
since
1981.
now
believe
it

Kids
I
was
already
born

a
very
long
time

teachers
who
are
receiving
this
award
I'm
the
superintendent
of
schools.
So
you
would
imagine
that
I
would
have
gotten
this
award
right
because
now

the
superintendent
nope
I
never
did

Kirsten
has
intimate
knowledge
of
her
students
and
uses
that
knowledge
to
subtly
help
her
students
to
grow
academically
socially
and
emotionally.
Kirsten
is
a
leader
amongst
her
colleagues.

readily
takes
leadership
roles,
Kirsten
facilitated
the
ELA
curriculum
for
the
first
grade
as
the
grade
level
representative
on
the
ELA
advisory.
She
has
extensive
knowledge
and
content
and
pedagogy
she
works
with
grade
level.
Colleagues
to
integrate
the
New
York
state
standards
across
multiple
disciplines
into
daily
lessons.

Kirsten
has
a
nurturing
classroom

the

supportive,
steady
and
creative
backbone
for
many
years.
She
makes
decisions
that
are
best

children,
while
keeping
the
overall
goals

vision

Wampus
at
the
Forefront
of
her
work.
She
is
a
collaborator
leader
and
promotes
positive
change.
Students
adore
her
parents,
collaborate

her
and
her
colleagues

devaney

unique

only
does
she
have
a
caseload

students
that
need
remediation,
but
she
also
supports
veteran

new
teachers

beyond
each

educate

collaborating
teacher

This
year
she
also
volunteered
to
participate
on
the
ELA
advisory
and
District
literacy
study.
Ms
devaney

a
firm
understanding

the
history
of
our
elementary
schools
pedagogy
and
our
curriculum.
This
feedback
has
been
helpful
in
guiding
our
focused
literacy
instruction.
She
also
thinks
outside
the
box
to
enhance
the
Wampus
experience
for
students
last
spring.

to
rejuvenate
the
Wampus,
extended
learning
program
called
welp.
This
requires
time
planning
and
Leadership
this
year.
The
program
has
mapped
World
cultures
and
a
steam
component.
Furthermore,
she's
organized
a
document

summarizes
the
history
ways
in
which
the
program
may
be
supported
and
potential
growth
for
future
years.
Lastly,
she
continues
to
pursue
her
own
education
by
working
with
BOCES
to
develop
courses
for
teachers.

is

the

Wampus,
the
students
are
learning
and
leading
the
faculty,
and
staff

and
the
parents
are

Liza
epitomizes,

teachers

HCC,

years
at
HCC.
Not
only
has
Ms
van
zanten
successfully
pursued
these
ideals,
but
she's
fostered
those
same
values
in
her
classroom.

thousands,

students
over
Ms,
Van,
Zant's
career,
have
benefited
enjoying
history,
expanding
their
perspective
and
developing
critical
historical
thinking
skills.

a
long
overdue
recognition

significant
contributions
that
Ms
van
zanten
gives
to
the
HCC
community.
Ms
Van
Zant's
classroom

laboratory
for
historical
thinking.
Each
unit

lesson

framed
around
a
debatable

and
she
guides
and
coaches
her
students
to
thoroughly
investigate
and
use
their
historical
thinking
skills
in
order
to
uncover
their
best
understanding

the
truth.

the

our

athletic
awards
senior

awards
last
night

it

a
wonderful
event.

highlighted
sportsmanship
and
teamwork
and
Athletics
and
you
know
scholarship,
and
it
was
just
we
heard
from
Jack
beer
who
came
back
to
speak.

guess
you're
going

talk
about
it

he
came
back

speak
with
us
and
gave
a
wonderful.

excited
last
night

bring
everybody
together

talk
about
our
program
and

have

coaches
come
together

deliver

unified

touched

a

more

I
expected
it

exciting

intramural
lunch
program
which
keeps
the
middle
school

high
school
students
extremely
active
during
the
school
day,
but
after
school.
The
unit,

intramural
Pro
program,
is
consistent
right
around
four
to
five
programs
each
year
that
we
offer
and
there's
a
picture,
a
picture
there
as
a
big.

just
mention
briefly,
the
merged
programs
that
we
have
so
we're
a
merge
program
with
for
boys
swimming
with
Pleasantville,
West,
Lake,
Valhalla
and
Briarcliff,
and
each
school
can
you
know
each
school
has
about
eight

maybe
nine
nine
swimmers
on
the
team,
and
that
will
stay
the
same.
It
will
continue
into
into
next
into
next
school
year
for
wrestling
we
merged
with
Valhalla
and
Westlake
this
year,
and
that
will
be
the
same
for
the
coming
year.
Girls
golf:

Skiing
merger
is
with
Briarcliff
just
Briarcliff
in
that
merger,
and
only
Fox
Lane
for
for
girls
golf
and
this
coming
school
year
will
be
adding
one
merger

that's

girls
swimming
to
the
same
schools

were
for
the
boys,
so
the
boys
and
girls
swimming
programs
will
mirror
each
other
for
the
merger
and
that's
really
what
drove
that
merger
to
take
place
next
year
is
participation
numbers
so
that
we
can
continue
to
be
competitive
and
offer
the
students
a
competitive,
swim
program.

merger
that
we're
taking
part

the
first
time
next
school
year
we
sent
out
a
survey,
and
so
when
that
survey
came
back,
we
knew
what
well
we
had
a
really
good
hunch
of
what
the
numbers
were
going
to
be.

then
what
I
did
was
I
I
held
a
meeting
in
the
dance
studio
and
I
invited
everybody,
even
if
they
missed
the
survey
to
come
in
and
the
number
stayed
the
same
so
it
can.

confirmed
with
the
survey

survey
that
we
did,
the
numbers
the
in-person
meeting,
confirmed
that
so
yeah.
We
we
do
do
the
survey
ahead
of
time,
but
now
I'll
talk
a
little
bit
more
about
our
unified
program
of
this
year.
We
expanded
our
unified
basketball
program,
we
added
more.
We
played
more
games
than
we
played
the
first
season.
The
first
season
was
a
pilot
introduction
to
the
program
and
it
just
overwhelming
success
and
interest.
Really
that's
the
word.

It
was
offered
for
the
first
time
and
several
school
districts
said:
hey,
this
basketball
works
so
well.
We
want
to
Venture
into
the
bowling
and
our
our
teachers
and
our
coaches
said
they
came
to
my
office.
You
know
in
in
in
a
group
and
said
Rob
can
we
do
this
and
we
just
said
yes,
we
can
do
this,
and-
and
we
also
received
some
some
grants
from
the
New
York
special
special
education,
Special
Olympics
from
the
Special
Olympics.

Yes,
it's
just
it
just
extends
the
majority
of
them
stayed
with
it.
This
year
the
unified
bowling
came
first
in
in
the
calendar
as
the
year
progressed
and
then
basketball
followed
it.
Is
it
real
bowling
or
bumper
bullet?
Oh
real
bowling,
oh
really,
yeah,
it's
hard.
It
was
fun,
it
was
fun.
Kids
had
fun.

We
saw
that
level
of
scholarship
and
sportsmanship
last
night
at
the
ceremony,
and
we
really
try
to
display
that
as
much
as
we
can
on
it
on
a
daily
basis
and
so
the
sportsmanship
recognition.
How
did
how

some
of
that
come
about
from
the
national
Federation
of
high
schools?
Well,
we
we
felt
that
it
was
important
to
put
out
a
sportsmanship
message.

It
started
because
we
wanted
to
show
support
for
the
game
officials,
there's
a
shortage
of
game
officials
nationally,
not
just
not
just
the
section
one
or
New
York
state
or
Regional
concern
it's
National.
So
knowing
that
there's
been
a
decline
in
officials,
we
wanted
to
show
support.
So
we
put
together,
we
put
together
a
one
minute,
video
and,
as
we
were
working
on
this
some
of
the
seniors
and
we
we
have
four
of
our
students
involved
and
the
ran
into
the
studio
with
Mr
melso
and
Mr
Alcantara
and
30
minutes
later.

So
then
it
was
tweeted
retweeted
by
the
New
York
State
executive
director
for
a
Public
High
School
Athletic,
Association,
Dr,
Robert
zayas,
and
then
it
went.
It
was
retweeted
by
the
director
of
the
national
Federation
of
high
schools
and
we
received
the
certificate
and
I
have
to
tell
you
that
just
so
proud
I'm
just
so
proud
of
that,
because
without
sportsmanship
we
don't,
we
don't
have
a
program,
and
so
I'm
really
really
proud
about
that
and
from
there
everything
else
comes
together.
So
we
look
at
the
League
championships.

The
individual
League
championships
for
from
track
and
field
had
the
majority
of
that.
You
know
the
individual
championships.
We
had
one
wrestler
in
there
and
then
the
section
Champions
as
well
made
up
of
right.

tennis
track
and
field

wrestling
and
the
state
championships.

was
all
tennis

we
had
a
team,
a
full
team
and
we
had
the
doubles
team
as
we

we

of
high
schools
and

scholar,
athletes
of
the
week

nominated
six
of
the
school
year
and

of

recognition.

the
bus
and

with
kids
and
spaces

are
conducive
to
kids
wanting
to
be
there.

also
need
spaces
where
kids
can
go,
particularly
during
that
small
period,
where
seventh
and
8th
grade
overlap
where
they
might
find
themselves
in
their
individual
time,
trying
to
maybe
work
on
something
together
in
their
sdl
time.

the
chilling
Beyond
is
a
is
a
comfortable
space
and
a
room
where
kids
can
get
together,
but
it
also
includes
things
for
kids
to
do
together.
So
if
it's
off
time
like
in
their
lunch
period
when
they
overlap,
kids
might
be
in
there
playing
games
together,
it's
just
more
of
a
conducive
environment.
For
a
student
who
doesn't
necessarily
feel
like
they
want
to
go
to
a
cafeteria
or
they
want
to
play
outside,
they
start
to
develop
those
Forge,
those
smaller
friendships,
so
those
could
be
designed
either
by
a
psychologist
or
a
school
guidance.

to
together
in
these
spaces
or
kids
can
just
elect
to
go
to
these
spaces,
but
we
desperately
felt
that
they
needed
spaces
other
than
just
the
cafeteria
at
lunch
in

library

Merit
financed
by
college
and
universities
through
the
U.S.

universities
chose
scholarship
winners
from

pool

National
Merit
Scholarship
program.

attend

Computing
and
hopes
to
work

graduate
and

presentation

wonderful

really
love,
is
when
they
show
their
their
young
selves
and
then
also
when
they
have
the
quote
of
what
they're,

they're,
hoping
that
they
will
become
one
day
and
identifying
that
with
the
student
just
really
humanizing
it.

science

research
Symposium,
you
hear
words,
you've
never
heard
before
right
and-

these
kids
are
actually
so

depth,

knowledge

understanding

their
specific
topics.

them

in
that
and
then
to
humanize
it
for
the
rest
of
us

their

and

aspirations

they

community
members

our
board
remembers,
but
summer
is
not
just
vacation
time
for
teachers.
A
lot
of
professional
learning
happens
over
the
summer
and
just
to
remind
our
community
and
we're
very
thankful
for
those
teachers
to
come
in
and
work
on
a
lot
of
different
curriculum
projects
and
engage
in
a
lot
of
workshops.
So
the
administrators,
principals,
chairs
and
directors
designed
to
Total
over
about
100
workshops
that
their
teachers
come
in,
that
are
designed
specifically
to
work
toward
Department
goals.

Has
been
a
place
for
about
25
years
now,
which
is
technology,
integration,
that's
designed
by
our
tech
department,
and
we
have
a
lot
of
teachers
who
participate
in
that
every
year.
So
it's
several
days
where
teacher
come
in
and
work
into

library
on
ways
to
utilize
technology
in
the
classroom,
and
it's
always
very
Innovative
and
we've
been
pushing
all
of
our
thinking
forward
with
those
workshops.

put

for
middle
school
and
I
was
surprised.
A
lot
of
teachers
were
interested
in
that
I.
Just
thought.
I
would
put
that
out
there
for
some
of
that
research-based
in
literacy
going
forward
in
the
middle
school
there's
some
interest,
so
that
could
be
an
area
we'll
continue
to
explore
the
next
year
and.

New
teachers
coming
in
take
workshops
designed
on
the
curriculum,
so
they
engage
in
foundations,
training,
which
is
our
phonics
program.
They
learn
our
literacy
curriculum,
the
math
curriculum
and
there's
also
a
web-based
social
studies,
Ela
curriculum
that
we
utilize.
So
all
new
teachers
spend
about
four
days
in
The
District
in
the
middle
of
the
summer,
training
on
that
material
as
well.
So
it's
a
busy
summer.
So
not
everybody
is
on
vacation.
It's
a
little
bit
later
and
I
want
to
thank
all
of
our
teachers
who
participate.
