And
he
he
would
benefit
from
probably
being
the
only
dog
in
the
home
or
only
animal
per
se,
but
other
than
that
yeah.
He
pretty
much
if
you're
loving
on
him
he'll
do
just
this
I
mean
you've
seen
the
episodes.

C
This
is
part
three
in
our
series
on
parasites.
Today's
topic
is
on
mosquitoes
and
heartworm
disease.
While
most
people
know
mosquitoes
as
a
nuisance.
Mosquitoes
can
also
spread
many
dangerous
diseases,
including
ones
that
affect
our
pets.
Today
we
are
going
to
focus
on
heartworm
disease.
A
parasite
spread
through
the
bite
of
a
mosquito
heartworm
disease
affects
both
dogs
and
cats,
but
for
the
sake
of
Simplicity,
we
are
going
to
talk
about
dogs.
C
Today,
dogs
get
heartworm
disease
from
the
bite
of
a
Mosquito
carrying
heartworm
larva,
while
dogs
cannot
directly
give
heartworms
to
one
another,
mosquitoes
bite
infected
dogs
and
give
heartworm
to
other
dogs.
Some
geographical
areas
have
a
higher
prevalence
of
heartworm
disease
than
others.
First,
only
certain
types
of
mosquitoes
can
transmit.
Heartworm
mosquitoes
also
tend
to
prefer
warmer
weather
and
wet
environments.
Maryland,
especially
Southern
Maryland
fits
this
description.
C
Well,
while
we
do
not
have
as
many
dogs
with
heartworm
disease
as
they
do
and
say,
the
Southeastern
U.S
heartworm
disease
is
still
very
much
prevalent
here
and
dogs
require
year-round
prevention
to
protect
them
from
this
disease.
So
why
is
heartworm
so
important
to
prevent
heartworms,
as
the
name
suggests
live
in
and
around
the
heart?
Adult
worms
can
grow
up
to
14
inches
long.
The
more
worms
present
in
the
heart,
the
harder
the
heart
must
work
to
pump
blood
past
the
worms
heartworm
disease
can
eventually
lead
to
right
heart
failure
and
even
death.
C
Since
we
cannot
protect
our
dogs
100
against
mosquitoes,
we
recommend
year-round,
heartworm
prevention.
Most
products
come
in
the
form
of
an
oral
tablet
that
you
give
once
a
month.
There
are
also
a
few
topical
products
on
the
market.
I
recommend
discussing
with
your
pet's
veterinarian
about
the
heartworm
prevention
best
for
your
pet.
C
An
annual
heartworm
test
is
also
required
to
ensure
that
your
dog
is
heartworm
negative
before
starting
prevention,
puppies
should
start
getting
tested
for
heartworm
disease
at
six
months
old.
This
is
a
simple
blood
test
that
only
uses
three
drops
of
blood
with
results
in
as
little
as
10
minutes.
So
what?
If
your
dog
tests
positive
for
heartworm?
Well,
most
cases
are
treatable,
especially
if
they're
caught
early
but
treatment
is
intense,
expensive
and
comes
with
risk.
