Thank you for coming out in the rain. I really do appreciate it and it has set my whole day a little.

Bit askew, so the programs that anybody saw are not applicable anymore, because we've had to rearrange.

Things to make it work, I do want to take a moment and remind everyone why we're here, and that is in.

Honor of remembrance of september 11 2001- and this is the 21st anniversary for those of you.

A

That don't know me, my name is susan mod, I'm the first vice president of cc visa and I'm going to.

A

Serve as your master of ceremony and because things are a little screwy, just kind of bear.

A

With us today we're going to begin our program with the union bridge fire company's honor guard.

A

Posting our colors once the colors are posted, they will ask us to join in the pledge of allegiance.

For this morning's invocation, I'd like to welcome chaplain deacon charlie's, charles e barnhart, jr.

B

Good morning, everyone, let us pause for prayer.

B

Gracious god, our heavenly father.

B

Today, we've reached another milestone in remembrance, father. We ask you to continue to.

B

Be with us, as we celebrate and I do say celebrate, even though we are saddened.

B

By the events 21 years ago, father there are people still hurting. There are people still healing.

B

And there are people that are still remembering.

B

Father we give thanks for this group assembled today, as we remember.

B

And we thank you for the reminder that you give to each one of us that you are with us.

B

And that your love and your care will be upon us until.

B

We've reached that ultimate goal of being a part of your kingdom.

B

We give thanks for this day and for what it means to each one of us, and may we just take time.

B

Just a few brief moments to remember again, we thank you for all of us here today.

B

We ask your continued blessing to be upon those who are hurting those who are mourning.

B

And we ask this and all your prayers in your gracious name, amen.

Thanks, charlie 8 46, oh please be seated. Excuse me. I apologize uh at 8 46 this morning. We will.

Join in a moment of silence to honor the 2983 men, women and children killed in.

A

The terrorist attacked at the world trade center, the pentagon and aboard flight 93.

A

So at 8 46 you will hear the bell chime and we will pause for a moment of silence.

A

We're honored to have with us today: u.s army, retired, colonel and our own carroll county.

A

Commissioner, edward rothstein, who will share a few words, please welcome commissioner rosti.

C

And I think I'm going to be before the 846 as well. So, um first off every time we say the pledge.

C

In uh open session, and everywhere we go it just every time is a new time. For me, it's so special.

C

And uh today was one of those days also a very much a thank you to all putting this together.

C

The environment does have a a say in what we do, but we are going to.

C

Make the best of it, so I appreciate the the audibles being called for the rest.

C

Of the ceremony as we move from here to uh outside as a as I began my remarks last year.

C

I do not believe I can start in any other way any better way than what president bush said.

C

When he stood the top of the rubble on september 14th in 2001. and declared, did I hear you he was.

C

Not focused on the words but on the sentiment of those words he hears you the world hears you and.

C

Most of all, those that conducted those horrific attacks hurt us. He shared these words that he was.

C

Committed to actions, and not just words alone, my intent today is to do somewhat of the same.

C

To create a sense of feeling, you may not remember the words I share. However, if you walk away.

C

From today with the intent and feeling, then I have done my job. There are not a lot of new.

C

Comments that can be made so who am I to think that I can all of a sudden make something new.

C

With that said, I'm going to take the time and share with you. What's really on my mind today,.

C

And honestly, it may not be liked by some of you. You may not feel like it's in the same way.

C

But regardless I'd be uh dishonest, if I didn't stand here and share with you a few of my real.

C

Thoughts and these thoughts that I'm going to share are a moment that are reflected when I.

C

Spent time in europe, as many of you know, I was in uniform for quite some time, and I was in.

C

London uh for some meetings and uh discussions with friends and allies and the days were long.

C

And what you do when the days are long, you take your friends and allies and you go to local pubs.

C

You have a good time with a a pint or two, and we did just that and while we're at a pub one time.

C

um We started getting into some deep discussion and then there was this group to the right of us.

C

And they were a bit boisterous and loud and having a good time singing- and I said in a nice way- can.

C

You tone it down just a little bit and one of the gentlemen's came up to me and said we're actually.

C

Celebrating this woman's husband's 35th birthday, he died in the north tower two years prior.

C

Needless to say, they didn't buy another pint for the rest of the night and we joined in them.

C

And put things in perspective and told stories of the importance of being together see out of.

C

The 2977 that died that were murdered the that day there were 372 foreign nationals from 61 countries.

C

And this is where I'm going with this story. I do not believe that any one of those 2977 murdered.

C

With 2553 at the world, trade centers 184 at the pentagon and 40 in the fields of pennsylvania,.

C

We're seeing themselves as partisan or racial or bound by religion against another.

C

As they were going through the unthinkable, they were not identified as republican as democrat.

C

As men as women as black as white as asian as muslim as christian of jew or islamic or hindu.

C

They were seen as men and women of mankind's and humanity.

C

Therefore, the question I have is what continues to make us go off the rails as americans, we must.

C

Be above the rhetoric that we see every day out of the devastation and destruction that happened.

C

On that horrific day should be an outpour of love and humanity. It must be a lesson towards.

C

Mankind and compassion where this will not be repeated. We were on bended knee as shared by.

C

President bush on the 14th, however, we stood tall and wiping off the dust is to recognize that we.

C

Are americans accepting all those like inscribed on the statue of liberty? Give me your tired. Your.

C

Poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free and sherry mandel further describes in a book.

C

The road to resilience from chaos to celebration- and I know I shared a little bit about this last.

C

Year, the jewish approach to resiliency is not to bounce back to the beginning, but to bounce back.

C

Better than you were before, as carol as a carroll county community, we have just that opportunity.

C

To do just that, through acceptance and stepping up against the garbage and rhetoric that we see.

C

And hear on social media and elsewhere. In addition, we bear the responsibility.

C

For our generation, our excuse me for our next generation, which leads us to the toughest.

C

Mission of them all, how do we teach those that understand no more than what they read in the.

C

History book or from personal experiences of their parents and now grandparents.

C

In addition, this will get even more difficult as time moves on, but definitely less important.

C

In hebrew we say la dorvador or generation to generation. We must make every anniversary, as.

C

Important as a last, this is the 21st anniversary and we should not be bound by zeros or fives to.

C

Make anything more special in closing it is our american culture, values and attitudes that make.

C

America, strong and always great, we were once on bent and knee when attacked and stood up.

C

Quickly, so that mud and dust were not to stay on our bodies or our souls that perished in.

C

Those tragic moments, in addition to those that have died since due to many complications, we.

C

Pursued those responsible and continue to commit our nation and its resources to remain strong.

C

So we never bend or allow others to attack our values as americans way of life.

C

These comments made this morning are not to constituents, but they're made.

C

To family and friends, neighbors and our great carroll county community.

C

Let's ensure the horrific events of september 11 2001 become a lesson for us to all recognize the.

C

Importance that we are all more similar than we're, not god bless those continue to serve in blue red.

C

And green and may god continue to bless carroll county maryland and the united states of america.

C

Life is good and even better with all of us working together. Thank you.

Of our 911 artifact, please welcome ccv's of past president, charles simpson jr. Thank you.

Thank you, susan. I believe you're actually going to get interrupted because it's one minute to 46 .

I think I was at this point last year so um but uh I think that's important and I think when that.

D

Happens and I'm kind of rambling, because it should happen pretty shortly right there right, okay,.

D

Thank you. My name is charles simpson. I'm past president of the carroll county.

D

Voluntary emergency services, association and past training manager of this facility.

D

It's interesting when we go back to the history of the memorial and where it came.

D

From and how it came about, many of you know that we started a renovation project here.

D

Back in the around 10 or 2010 2011 area, and to build this particular facility.

D

um In august of 2014, as the facility was under construction, shane darwick, who was the training.

D

Center manager at that time wrote a letter to the world trade center artifact giveaway program.

D

uh In august 7th of 2015 as president of the association, I received a response.

D

From the giveaway program that said, we have a piece of steel that we would be willing to donate.

D

To carroll county they had 900 requests, they had 30 pieces of steel left and we were chosen.

D

To receive one, if we wanted it, I said: oh, that's great, we kind of thought well, we were going to.

D

End up with a nice little something we could put in our display case out here in the main lobby.

D

As it turned out, they said: well, it's 14 feet, long, nine inches wide and 23 inches in length in height.

D

Weighs 1500 pounds you just need to make some arrangements to come pick it up and oh by the.

D

Way you got less than 10 days, so uh oh wow, okay, uh it was one of those okay. I got on the phone.

D

I immediately called commissioner lance, who was the president of the commissioners at the time.

D

Board of commissioners said: uh stevie, we got a problem, you know, we've got some work that we.

D

Need to do here and uh if we want to get this particular artifact steve, commissioner, lance.

D

Immediately contacted the rest of his board, they enthusiastically said yeah. Let's do this, let's.

D

Come up with what we can do, let's place it out at the training center. It's going to be perfect.

D

So uh then we had to start making some other arrangements. We contacted the chairman of our.

D

Fire rescue ops committee and said: okay: we need to make some arrangements for picking it up.

D

He jumped right on that contacted bob eckles and assistant supervisor ted mcnett over at.

D

The career and technology center- and this was like wow man- this is, we can do this and they.

D

Said yeah, you know, let's uh what do you need? I said: what can you do? They said everything.

D

And they did and- and I mean literally from the design they put- that into their drafting class.

D

And they came up with all kinds of designs: they went through the masonry class, the electrical.

D

Class, the steel workers class everything they got a hold of their contractors, their suppliers.

D

And they made it work and brought this thing over here, and the neat thing was even their.

D

Culinary class fixed the meals for them, so it just was one heck of a project they put this.

D

Thing together, we did all the designs. The fire rescue ops committee made the arrangements. Okay.

D

We've got to go up to the port authority in new york and pick it up and uh get it down here and.

D

You know put it someplace, so we can get it put in place and it was one heck of a project and.

D

Some great tremendous work by all involved from the bureaucracy and the county to the volunteers.

D

Throughout the county- and we ended up dedicating uh the project october 7th 2015 and set it out.

D

There and it's been a unique and something that's a very proud for all to come and see and during.

D

My time here as a training center manager, it was not unusual to see cars even out of state vehicles.

D

Pull up and park out front here and go over to the memorial and take a look at it. Take pictures.

D

Of it and uh usually bow their head and say a few words, so it uh something the carroll county.

D

Can be extremely proud of and those that helped put the project together also extremely proud.

D

So, oh I had that wrong. It was a dedicated april, 30th 2017.. So may we never forget. Thank you.
