Description
Ceph creator Sage Weil talks to Sean Michael Kerner/InternetNews about the state of Ceph today and where it's going tomorrow.
A
It's
very
exciting
we're
having
a
lot
of
luck,
bringing
in
some
good
executive
talent,
the
technical
roadmap.
That's
coming
along
yeah.
B
A
We've
got
a
lot
of
great
press
yeah,
it's
very
exciting
and.
B
A
B
A
A
better
term
where
there
are
a
few.
A
Was
no
pr
organization,
we
didn't
have
any.
A
Nobody
was
using
any
production
yet
so
it's
really
sort
of
a
research
type
of.
B
Project
and
it's
only
recently
that.
A
We've
been
able
to
bring
the
technology
to
the
point
where
we
can
actually
use
it
in
production,
so
customers
are
actually
interested
in
running
it.
A
B
B
From
a
support
perspective
in
terms
of
the
engagements
that
you've
had
to
date,
what
sort
of
support
requests
you
have?
Is
it
as
basic
as
I'd
like
to
use
this,
or
is
it
more
complex
as
I'm
deploying
it,
but
I
need
to
scale
it
across.
You
know
15.
A
Use
it
effectively
for
those
that
have
it
in
production,
it's
been
very
easy
actually
so
far,
it's
a
matter
of
helping
them
when
they
have
problems
walking
through.
B
B
A
Right
most
customers
who
are
using
it
today
are
using
for
their
private
or
public
cloud
deployments.
That's
sort
of
the
the
current
use
case,
that's
well
supported
and
well
tested
and.
A
And
so
that's
both
storing
virtual
disks
block
devices
for
virtual
machine
hosting
that's
shared
and
replicated
and
reliable
all
that
stuff,
and
also
for
using
the
radoscapeway
component,
which
is
a
restful
interface
that
gives
you
s3
and
swift
s3.
A
B
A
B
B
A
B
Your
personal
goal
in
the
project
is:
is
it
for
seth
to
be
the
most
performant,
the
most
latency
non-sensitive,
or
is
there
some
other
key
thing
that
you
say
hey
look?
This
is
what
it
is,
or
is
it
just
a
combination
of
a
whole
bunch
of
things.
B
B
B
Yeah
yeah
exactly
good
that
makes
sense
and
then,
in
terms
of
the
open
source
project
itself,
now
that
you've
got
you
know
the
money
from
ink
space
et
cetera
any
tank
and
you're
putting
things
in.
How
are
you
managing
the
project
and
making
sure
that
you
know
the
open
source
is
separate
from
whatever
commercial
activities
you
are?
Is
there
some
kind
of
magic
firewall
or
is
it
all
open
source?
And
then
just
everything
is
services
and
support
on
top.
A
Well,
I
should
I
should
mention
that
the
open
source
project
is
deliberately
distributed,
copyright,
it's
not.
Actually
the
code
isn't
actually
going
to
maintain.
We
just
happened
to
hire
happen
to
have
all
most
of
the
developers
working
for
us.
So
obviously
we
have
a
lot
of
influence
with
the
roadmap,
but
our
goal
is
to
build
a
vibrant
developer
community
that
is
not
just
funded
by
us,
because
we
want.
A
For
set
to
succeed
and
become
ubiquitous
in
the
marketplace,
and
then
you
know,
inktank
will
compete
against
everyone
else
on
the
basis
of
offering
the
best
support
and
the
best
professional
services
and
actually
be
good
at
what
it
does
could
not.
B
A
Be
sort
of
the
winner
by
default,
and
so
a
lot
of
what
that
means
for
us
is
making
sure
that
our
internal
development
processes
are
as
open
as
possible.
So
we
encourage
all
our
developers
even.
B
A
B
Because
I
tend
to
see
file
system
updates
in
any
given
kernel,
lots
of
them
for
better
for
worse.
There
was
a
a
lot
of
lately.
There
was
a
lot
of
activity
with
butterfest,
but
I
haven't
seen
a
whole
lot
of
ceph
stuff
in
the
last.
Maybe
two
or
three
kernels
is
that
is
that
something
that
I
might
have
missed,
or
is
that
you've.
A
There's
a
lot
of
maintenance
going
on,
but
there
aren't
a
lot
of
new
features
or
anything
like
that.
So
it's
mostly
bug
fixes.
In
the
last
two
cycles,
we've
had
several
a
lot
of
fixes
and
then
messaging.
The
network
passing
code.
A
B
B
A
Of
the
new
features
in
rbd
is
the
ability
to
clone
images,
so
you
might
have
an
image
that
has
your
face:
ubuntu,
1204.
A
Can
clone
into
new
images
and
suddenly
make
an
instant
copy
and
write
copy
and
then
boot
your
vm,
without
waiting
for
a
bunch
of
data
to
move
over
the
network?
And
that
will
be
that's
supported
today
in
library
which
links
to
kvm
directly.
But
if
you
want
to
use
the
kernel
rvdriver
that
support
isn't
in
place
yet,
and
so
that
will
come
soon.
That.
B
Seems
like
a
big
deal
just
so
that
it's
very
clear
to
me
being
a
layperson.
What's
that
going
to
enable
that
I
can't
do
today
because,
like
I'm
guessing
it's
a
bunch.
A
Of
things
yeah,
it
means
the
main
thing
it
means
is
that
you'll
be
able
to
create
a
new
virtual
machine
in
your
cloud
environment
that
boots
up
instantly.
You
won't
have
to
currently
most
cloud
stacks
will
instantiate
an
image
file
on
the
local
disk
and
they
actually
have
to
download
the
operating
system.
B
A
A
slow
operation
and
then
the
new
kernel
begins
to
boot
in
the
virtual
machine,
and
this
will
let
it
instantly
so
there's
no
there's
no
delay.
It'll
also
enable
some
future
features
like
being
able
to
migrate.
The
storage
from
one
set
pool
storage
to
another.
So
it's
backed
by
different
storage
devices
all
seamlessly,
while
the
vm
is
still
running.
But
that's
right.
A
Yeah
for
for
rbd,
I
know
it's
obviously
the
cli
yeah,
then
there's
a
shared
library
that,
let's
gives
you
access
to
all
the
management
functionality.
So,
for
example,
openstack
and
cloud
stack
both
link
build
rd,
the
python
bindings
surrounding
it
at
least
yeah,
and
they
use
that
to
manipulate.
B
And
then,
in
terms
of
the
core
project
itself,
where
are
you
at
in
terms
of
next
interesting
release
cycle
and
the
development
roadmap?.
A
B
A
B
A
B
A
B
Looking
out
a
year
two
years
give
or
take,
which
I
know
is
a
ridiculous
amount
of
time,
this
business.
Where
do
you
see
stuff
in
a
year.
B
In
a
year,
that's
that
would
be.
A
Kidding,
I
would
expect
to
see
seth
underpinning
a
range
of
public
private
cloud
deployments
and
I
would
expect
to
see
it
in
sort
of
poc
type
stages
for
classes
and
deployments.
