From YouTube: Provost Folks discusses what makes Chandler an ideal location for University of Arizona
Description
City of Chandler Economic Development Director, Micah Miranda, sat down with Provost Liesl Folks of University of Arizona (UA) to discuss the university’s presence within the City of Chandler, current programs, and plans for future growth.
A
A
A
B
Absolutely
happy
to
so.
The
Provost
is
the
chief
academic
officer
at
any
University,
and
so
one
of
the
things
that
I
have
oversight
over
is
all
of
the
colleges
and
all
of
the
academic
programs
that
our
students
take
advantage
of
here
in
Arizona.
A
Well,
thank
you
for
that.
So
I'm
going
to
jump
right
in
obviously
U
of
e
is
a
well-known
academic
institution,
but
when
evaluating
the
the
regional
higher
education
ecosystem,
the
university
see
a
unique
opportunity
to
fill
a
gap
in
establishing
its
Chandler
campus.
B
So
absolutely
we
I
guess
I
don't
have
to
share
to
you
that
Chandler
is
really
at
the
heart
of
the
rapidly
growing
East
Valley
segment
of
Maricopa
County,
and
what
we
see
is
a
young
Workforce
with
a
relatively
low
median
age
and
people
with
high
skill
levels
who
are
moving
into
jobs
that
are
relatively
well
remunerated.
And
why
do
we
like
that?
A
Wow,
no
that's
that's
great
and
how
significant
of
a
decision
was
it
to
increase
the
University
of
Arizona's
presence
in
Chandler.
B
Okay,
well
at
some
part
that
some
part
of
me
wants
to
say:
well,
it
was
a
no-brainer
Micah.
When
we
look
at
the
kinds
of
companies
that
are
in
Chandler
today,
the
ones
that
are
looking
to
move
into
Chandler,
what
we
hear
from
them
all
the
time
is,
we
need
a
highly
talented,
highly
skilled
Workforce
for
our
companies
to
flourish.
B
So
at
some
level
there
was
a
strong
pull
for
us
to
come
into
Chandler
I
will
say
too,
and
without
wishing
to
flatter
the
city
of
Chandler
has
been
a
delight
to
work
with,
and
we
felt
very
welcome
coming
into
the
community.
We
want
to
make
sure
that
people
in
Chandler
have
access
to
choices.
They
have
a
wide
variety
of
academic
programs
that
they
can
participate
in
and
that
it
lines
up,
of
course,
with
the
real
Workforce
demands
in
the
area.
B
A
I
I
guess
that's
that
leads
to
another
question
is
from
the
University's
perspective,
what
programs
or
academic
offerings
make
the
most
sense
for
Chandler
or
the
Southeast
Valley
as
a
whole.
B
Sure
well
so
Chandler
has
become
a
bit
of
a
hub
for
a
technology,
Rich
companies
and
then
around
the
companies
that
are
manufacturing
high
technology,
Goods
there's
a
supply
chain,
that's
built
up
in
support
of
that,
and
many
of
those
companies
that
are
first,
second
and
third
tier
suppliers
also
need
tech,
employees,
meaning
people
who
have
strong
quantitative,
Square
skills,
good
technical
communication
skills.
So
never
we
would
never
want
to
dictate
to
students.
B
What
degree
program
is
the
right
program
to
go
in
into,
but
we
want
to
make
sure
that
we're
giving
people
those
skills
in
numeracy
in
technical
communication
that
will
allow
them
to
find
jobs
in
the
workplaces
that
are
right
there
in
Chandler
I
want
to
make
one
other
point
too.
Micah
Arizona
traditionally
has
suffered
a
bit
with
employing
people
to
sorry
and
educating
people
to
a
high
degree
and
then
having
them
leave
the
state
to
go
and
work
elsewhere.
B
A
B
Sure
so
we're
sitting
at
around
you
know
a
few
thousand
students
right
now
in
the
in
the
Maricopa
area,
more
broadly
we're
hoping
to
double
or
or
even
triple
that
over
the
next
few
years,
so
we're
looking
at
a
pretty
aggressive
growth
curve.
B
We
that
will
be
spread,
though,
across
multiple
programs,
not
that
you
know
not
all
in
one
program
or
another.
We
are
looking
to
add
more
programs
in
the
near
future,
so
stay
tuned
for
more
news
on
that.
B
If
you
go
to
the
University
of
Arizona
site
and
type
in
Chandler,
you
go
directly
to
the
Chandler
location
or
you
know,
UA
Chandler
location
will
get
you
there.
I
know
everyone
knows
how
to
do
these
things
these
days,
but
that
then
lists
all
of
the
programs
that
have
active
support
from
the
channel
at
location
and
are
offered
from
Chandler.
A
Anything
else
you
would
like
to
share
with
the
viewers
before
we
we
log
off
here.
A
Right
all
right!
Well,
thank
you
for
your
time
and
we
look
forward
to
our
continued
partnership
with
the
university
absolutely.
