A
Thank
you
for
joining
us
today
for
an
update
on
ccsd
schools
and
where
we
are,
as
we
begin
the
second
nine
weeks
of
the
school
year.
First,
we
should
pause
to
take
note
of
the
fact
that
we've
actually
made
it
through
the
first
quarter
of
the
most
unique
year
in
our
memories.
We
need
to
celebrate
this
because
truly
it
is
no
small
accomplishment.
A
We
are
particularly
proud
of
the
work
by
educators
and
support
staff
during
these
challenging
times
from
day
one.
Our
schools
have
offered
parents
a
choice
of
attendance
options
knowing
that
one
size
doesn't
fit
all
families,
we've
honored
the
requests
for
in-person
in
a
measured
way
that
we
could
effectively
manage
inside
our
buildings.
A
Likewise,
for
those
parents
who
are
not
ready
to
return
in
person,
we
will
continue
to
offer
one
or
more
remote
learning
options.
We
want
to
thank
our
teachers
and
staff
members,
whose
flexibility
and
tolerance
for
dealing
with
so
many
unknowns
and
adjustments
allowed
school
to
resume
in
charleston
county
for
students
five
days
a
week,
beginning
september
8th.
A
A
We
began
the
school
year
on
september,
8th
with
about
one
out
of
every
four
children
returning
to
school
in
person.
Principals
and
teachers
have
phased
in
an
additional
number
of
students
over
time,
as
more
parents
have
requested
in-person
learning.
In
fact,
an
additional
5
100
students
will
return
november
11th.
A
A
As
we
respond
to
the
voices
of
parents
who
want
to
return
to
school,
we
also
hear
clearly
the
voices
of
teachers,
many
of
whom
are
teaching
students
in
person
and
online.
At
the
same
time,
teachers
ask
that
we
do
everything
we
can,
especially
at
the
elementary
level,
to
help
them
devote
their
attention
to
students
by
reducing
the
complexities
involved
in
teaching
children
in
person
and
online.
Simultaneously.
A
A
A
Ccsd
was
among
the
early
leaders
in
providing
a
daily
public
dashboard
of
positive
cases
in
schools.
We
will
continue
to
closely
monitor
the
data
and
report
openly
and
transparently.
Has
everything
worked
out
perfectly?
Of
course
not,
however
I'll
say,
given
all
the
unknowns,
I
think
charleston
county
teachers,
staff
students
and
parents
have
risen
to
the
occasion
in
a
way
that
adds
respect
and
pride
to
our
system.
End
to
end.
Teachers
especially
have
been
amazing
working
through
the
thorniest
of
problems
in
uncharted
territory.
A
A
Sometimes
lost
in
our
intense
focus
on
the
pandemic
are
some
notable
accomplishments,
such
as
charleston
county
schools,
senior
class
of
2020
had
the
highest
on-time
graduation
rate
on
record
last
spring,
with
nearly
87
percent
of
students
receiving
a
state
diploma.
The
college
board
announced
that
ccsd's
passing
rate
for
advanced
placement
tests
is
10
points.
Above
the
national
average
new
schools
opened
in
september
at
c.e
williams,
south
camp
road,
middle
cooper,
river
center
for
advanced
studies
and
lucy
beckham
high
three
of
our
high
schools
won
state
athletic
championships.
A
As
we
move
into
our
second
quarter.
Let's
pause
a
minute
to
take
stock
of
the
fact
that
our
students,
staff,
members
and
schools
are
at
a
much
better
place
than
we
feared
last
summer,
when
all
of
us
were
navigating
the
unknowns
in
preparation
for
a
safe,
restart
over
the
course
of
the
pandemic.
The
multifaceted
role
schools
serve
has
been
on
full
display.
A
A
As
we
enter
this
season
of
gratitude,
I
am
grateful
for
charleston
county's,
selfless,
resolute
educators
and
staff
members
for
supportive
parents
and
community
members
and
for
the
grace
we've
shown
to
one
another.
As
we
navigate
these
unusual
and
perplexing
times,
we
move
into
the
second
nine
weeks
determined
to
create
the
best
possible
learning
experience
for
all
students
and
I'm
absolutely
confident
that
we're
going
to
continue
to
succeed
as
we
learn
and
work.
