Back
to
CCSD
today,
I'm
your
host
Erica
Taylor,
and
now
you
have
an
opportunity
to
hear
from
the
principle
of
Burke
high
school
mr.
Maurice
cannon
who's,
going
to
tell
you
how
proud
he
is
his
administrators
staff
students,
parents
and
the
community
are
that
for
the
first
time
ever,
Burke
high
school
has
received
the
rating
of
average
here
from
Maurice
cannon
birth.
G
Rising
is
achievement
level
to
average,
from
at
risk
is
spot
on
to
reaching
the
vision
of
2016.
The
superintendent
has
articulated
primarily
on
the
necessity
for
us
to
close
to
achievement
gaps
between
students
who
are
traditionally
underserved
or
underperforming
students
and
considering
the
Democrats
demographics
of
Burke,
middle
and
high
school.
G
Although
our
student
body
population
is
primarily
of
one
racial
or
ethnic
makeup,
still
wears
I'm
closing
the
achievement
gap
between
students
within
this
setting
as
compared
to
students
in
other
settings,
thus
hidden
one
of
the
targets
that
the
superintendent
has
as
well
as
us,
reaching
academic
performances
of
reducing
the
number
of
at-risk
schools
for
vision.
2016.
G
The
superintendent
has
the
desire
that
none
of
Charleston
County
Schools
should
be
label
will
be
labeled
at
risk,
so
definitely
we're
hitting
the
target
there
as
well
and
not
being
an
at-risk
school,
but
an
average
school
and
on
our
way
to
good
our
students
accomplished
a
great
great
task,
and
the
faculty
and
staff
members
here
at
the
school
also
were
related
to
receive
that
news.
And,
of
course
it's
no
secret
that
for
years
it
becomes
burdensome.
G
When
you
hear
over
the
course
of
many
years
that
you're
at
at
risk,
school
or
students
are
not
performing
at
a
high
academic
level,
then
people
began
to
feel
as
if
they
are
not
reaching
levels
of
high
expectations
and
the
like.
But
when
we
receive
that
news
that
we
move
out
of
that
at
risk
category,
the
enthusiasm
really
sparked
throughout
this
building
and
at
night
of
the
flame
that
is
still
still
on
fire
right
now,
with
attitudes
in
the
demeanor
and
just
a
witness
that
the
students
are
getting
within
themselves.
G
Knowing
that,
although
they
are
presented
with
many
tasks,
many
struggles,
but
they
can
overcome
those
obstacles,
reach
academic
success
and
now,
from
the
state
level,
having
been
acknowledged
that
you
guys
are
really
increasing
in
your
academic
abilities,
then
the
students
are
desirous
not
to
go
backwards,
that
they
want
to
continue
achieving
and
going
full
steam
ahead.
What
we
are
seeing
now
from
the
outcomes
of
the
newspaper
and
the
not
so
positive
media,
you
know
someone's
quoted
in
the
paper
of
saying
too
little
too
late.
G
G
There's
some
hurt
from
the
students
that,
after
all,
that
we're
doing
and
we're
pushing
and
we're
fighting,
and
it
was
said
that
the
school
should
not
be
in
that
risk
school
and
mr.
Kenan
we
worked
hard.
But
how
can
people
still
think
of
closing
our
school
and
moving
a
different
school,
some
school
with
a
name
moving
that
program
inside
of
our
school?
What's
going
to
happen
to
us?
G
So
that
was
heartening
to
hear
students
say
this,
but
also
again
in
knighting
that
fire
within
them
to
continue
to
fight
and
to
show
that
there
are
some
they're
all
somebody's
there.
You
know
no
one
the
whole
idea
of
no
one
or
nobody
wants
to
go
to
berk.
Well,
the
kids
are
saying
no
we're
somebody
and
we're
the
ones
who
are
going
to
be
committed
to
moving
the
school
ahead.
I
think.
H
That
the
ride
for
my
at
risk
level
to
a
average
level
is
wonderful
and
it
encourages
our
students
a
lot
when
misfit
candy
came
back
as
principal.
He
was
always
encouraging
us
to
do
better
do
better,
because
our
school
is
out
of
risk
of
closing
down
and
I
think
he
just
instilled
in
the
students
of
pride
and
because
they
really
wanted
to
be
a
part
of
the
school.
I
The
law
firm
of
young
defendant
Rivers
has
been
serving
the
Charleston
low
country
since
nineteen
sixty
eight
all
of
the
lawyers
of
young
women
rivers
are
proud
to
be
partners
with
the
Charleston
County
School
District.
We
were
convinced
that
the
hard
work
of
the
school
district
employees
and
staff
prepares
our
young
people
to
face
the
challenges
of
the
future.
We
look
forward
to
continuing
our
partnership
and
in
helping
the
school
district
to
meet
its
standard
of
excellence.
I've.
J
Know
that
my
fellow
classmates
and
the
other
students
feel
that
they
are
successful
because
I
mean
we
achieved
history
and
we
are
continuing
to
make
history
so
I
feel
that
the
history
that
we've
me
is
becoming
an
average
school
has
motivated
them
in
ways.
I
can't
even
explain.
Cuz
I
feel
that
I
have
achieved
success
as
well.
My.
G
G
That's
something
that's
been
here
for
quite
some
time
the
abilities
of
the
students
to
perform
and
to
achieve
at
high
levels.
Yet
whether
or
not
they
saw
it
within
themselves
is
the
question,
and
we
spend
a
lot
of
time
with
students
to
motivate
them
to
celebrate
the
small
stuff
and
knowing
the
more
that
we
celebrate
the
little
things,
the
more
that
they
will
continue
to
achieve
the
higher
their
achievement
will
be,
and
that
will
lead
us
to
the
big
stuff
for
celebrating.
So,
yes,
we're
going
to
celebrate.
You
turns
your
homework
in
on
time.
G
Yes,
we're
going
to
celebrate
that
you
made
a
passing
grade
on
that
test,
or
that
assessment
we're
even
going
to
celebrate
that
you
came
to
school
today
and
through
those
opportunities
that
shown
the
students
a
more
for
connection
of
caring.
But
this
work
did
not
just
start
with
the
canon
administration.
G
Benton
and
to
have
the
chance
to
learn
from
a
seasoned
administrator
through
the
lens
of
me,
being
an
an
assistant
principal
first
year,
ap
and
spending
many
evenings
in
his
office,
picking
his
brain
different
ideas,
different
suggestions
and
learning
from
his
successes
that
he's
acquired
throughout
the
years
and
to
use
that
information,
as
well
as
my
own
information
and
my
relationship
with
others
in
the
community,
to
use
all
of
that
information
to
benefit
the
work
that
we're
doing
with
our
students.
And
that
makes
a
difference.
G
I
feel
as
if
it's
very
difficult
for
someone
who
is
new
to
Charleston
new
to
the
area
new
to
the
environment,
to
be
as
successful
working
with
our
students.
You
may
know
education,
we
may
know
educational
jargon
and
that
kind
of
detailed
information,
but
working
with
the
students
of
this
community
really
take
someone
who
is
connected
with
wanting
to
learn
as
much
as
you
can
about
the
children
of
this
community
and
their
families
and
best
the
administrative
team
that
I
have
with
me
here
at
Burke.
G
It's
in
the
heart
of
this
community
I
think
is
very
palpable.
It's
very
it's
something
that
you
can
actually
breathe.
You
can
touch.
You
can
see
it
in
the
eyes
of
so
many
who
passed
along
these
halls
or
the
holes
that
existed
years
ago
and
I
think
is
that
beating
is
a
cadence
of
Burke
and
the
name
of
Burke
and
how
reputable
it
is
throughout
the
state
of
South
Carolina
and
beyond
that
exact.
G
At
times.
We
are
becoming
more
more
disconnected
with
the
need
for
students
to
learn
the
art
of
writing
and
to
understand
that
there's,
a
cognitive
connection
when
that
pin
is
writing
information
on
that
paper
and
the
brain
is
processing
this
information
that,
yes,
that's
a
form
of
Technology
once
upon
a
time
this
was
a
pencil
and
something
to
write
with
wasn't
in
an
innovative
thing
for
our
students
and
I.
G
This
is
my
dad's
handwriting
and
too
often,
I
I
feel
as
if
our
students
and
this
push
to
technology
could
be
causing
students
to
feel
as
if
learning
will
not
take
place
unless
I
have
a
tablet
in
front
of
me.
So
that's
something
that's
very
key
for
my
administration,
not
to
use
the
authenticity
of
the
pillow
or
the
pin
or
the
textbook
or
novel
within
itself.

B
Back
with
more
CCSD
today,
I'm
your
host
Erika
Taylor,
now
didn't
you
learn
so
much
more
about
Burke,
high
school
I'm,
sure
more
than
you
knew
from
principal
cannon,
I'm
sure
you
can
feel
how
proud
he
is
of
his
school
and
we
are
proud
of
a
school
as
well.
Now
you
have
an
opportunity
to
see
a
special
presentation
and
dedication
by
Burke
high
school
alum,
James
Campbell,
our.
G
Dedication
today
present
it
to
Burke
a
collection
of
genetic
literature.
Mr.
Campbell
was
born
here
in
Charleston
South
Carolina
in
this
community
attendant
Burke
for
a
brief
period
of
time
and
actually
taught
one
year
here,
Burke
before
relocating
to
the
north
he's
in
his
88th
year
of
life,
and
that's
something
to
celebrate
right
there
and
to
have
that
kind
of
knowledge.
And
here
in
the
building
and
to
share
with
us.
G
His
research
throughout
the
years
was
very
meaningful
to
the
students
and
for
him
to
consider
Burke
as
a
primary
place
where
he
will
like
this
information
to
be
rent
to
be
touched
and
breathe,
that
students
to
digest
this
literature
and
to
understand
the
important
role
of
genetics.
Research
in
our
current
day
and
time
is
something
that's
honour
for
us
and
I
do
know
that
it's
a
part
of
that
Burke
legacy.
G
That's
allowed
him
to
share
this
information
with
us
and
he
also
shared
this
information
through
a
dedication
in
the
name
of
his
deceased
daughter,
Kenyatta,
Dubois
Campbell,
and
what
an
awesome
opportunity
for
the
students
here
to
be
not
only
connected
to
the
history
of
Berk
through
mr.
Campbell's
generosity.
But
to
the
future
of
their
own
lives
and
to
the
lives
of
this
world
around
us
and
studying
and
breaking
down
genomes
and
understanding
the
importance
of
genetic
study
here
in
our
society
for
curing
diseases
for
creating
new
life.
How
relevant?
M
M
That's
the
challenge
we
face
today
and
it's
a
excellent
challenge
on
one
hand
with
benefits,
but
it's
a
dangerous
challenge.
On
the
other
hand,
with
having
life
commodified
and
owned
by
pharmaceuticals
through
the
process
of
patent
law,
knowledge
is
open-ended,
and
if
it's
based
on
the
notion
of
the
school
philosophically
is
based
on
the
notion
that
we
can
know
everything,
you'll,
never
stop.
Learning
you
read
till
you're.
My
age
is
very
important,
because
it's
a
bit
we're
constantly
learning
more.
These
youngsters
and
their
grandchildren
will
see
space
exploration.
M
They
will
see
humankind
colonized
planets
in
this
system
and
infer
the
systems.
The
universe
is,
infinite
is
infinite
and
we
should
put
our
youngsters
on
that
path
of
assessing
knowledge
on
a
basis
that
they
can
know
everything
they
may
not
know
it
in
their
lifetime,
but
they
need
to
pass
it
on
to
their
children
and
their
grandchildren.
So
the
key
thing
out
of
this
introduction
to
genetics
and
the
genome
I
would
like
to
see
a
nurturing
and
a
peaking
of
their
curiosity.

A
question
for
you:
what
does
this

It
may
look
like

it's
really
an

to
reach

with
a
great

That's
ignition
right,
I'm,
a
strong
believer
that
when
students
can
make
a
connection
outside
the
classroom
that
it
really
reinforces
what
they're
learning
in
the
classroom-
and
it
really
helps
with
the
relevancy
of
the
classroom,
material,
they're,
learning
good.
These

do
not
come

skills.
They
are
learning
a
tremendous
amount
in

in
our

U
V
Everybody
has
been
really
taken
aback
at
how
productive
these
interns
are
same
way.
That
I
had
a
little
trepidation
at
first
is
that,
will
they
really
be
useful?
They've
certainly
proved
their
worth,
and
it
even
gets
to
the
point.
On
Monday
morning
we
were
having
our
discussion
about
who's
going
to
get
to
work
with
Anna.
Today,
everybody's
raising
their
hand,
I
want
Anna
to
help
me
I.
U
Think
it's
really
important
to
develop
a
level
professionalism
and
students
so
that
they
have
a
goal,
even
if
it's
not
necessarily
what
they
started
out
with
I'm
still
very
interested
in
architecture.
But
even
if
I
wasn't,
I
would
now
be
exposed
to
engineering
and
contracting
and
different
works,
and
it
helps
keep
students.
Local
I,
think
a
lot
of
businesses
are
growing,
Charleston
is
growing
and
it's
becoming
more
professional
and
there's
a
need
for
higher
level
education
and
jobs.
