A
Sometimes,
teachers
think
that,
just
because
an
ml
student
has
been
in
the
country
for
a
few
years,
they're
ready
to
tackle
academic
rigor
at
the
same
levels
as
their
non-ml
peers.
It
is
important
that
everyone
understands
the
difference
between
social
and
academic
language
acquisition.
Professor
and
researcher
Jim
Cummings
found
that
there
are
two
levels
of
acquisition.
The
first
is
Biggs
or
basic
interpersonal
communication
skills.
This
refers
to
Everyday
social
face-to-face
interaction.
Some
examples
are
the
language
used
on
the
playground
or
talking
on
the
phone.
A
Research
shows
that
it
can
take
a
learner
from
6
months
up
to
two
years
to
develop
bigs.
The
second
is
called
calp
or
cognitive
academic
language
proficiency,
which
focuses
on
academic
language
primarily
used
in
the
classroom.
This
kind
of
language
is
usually
abstract
context
and
content
based
and
specialized
students
acquiring
academic
language
need
to
be
able
to
compare,
classify,
synthesize
and
evaluate.
A
Does
that
sound?
A
little
like
blooms?
Researchers
show
that
can
it
can
take
a
learner
at
least
five
years
to
develop
cow,
but
students
that
have
no
prior
instruction
or
support
in
their
native
language
can
take
up
to
seven
years
to
acquire.
Research,
often
use
the
iceberg
as
a
pictorial
representation.
To
show
that
Biggs
is
above
the
surface.
Language
and
cap
is
under
the
surface
language.
